Got this for $574 USD with student discount, and Lenovo webpage discounts. Upgraded to the Ryzen 5 CPU, the extended battery, backlit keyboard, Fingerprint reader and the top high resolution 400nit screen. Can’t beat this laptop for the price I got it for hands down amazing.

Excellent video; I recently purchased a variant with the Ryzen 7, updated screen, battery, and other features for around $612 after tax. The only issue I had was that I bought the laptop intending to upgrade the RAM and SSD myself. While the RAM upgrade was simple, installing the SSD in the extra 2280 SSD slot was not. The SSD screw is completely stuck on there, and the only way to remove it is with some special pliers; just a heads up to anyone contemplating about changing the SSD.

This laptops design is so good. Best bezels of any of their 16 inch laptops. Only Issue I have with it is the keyboard travel sucks compared to my t480 and the build feels cheaper. Still amazing. I hope they refine this design with some magnesium/thunderbolt and a better keyboard.

Thanks for the great review. I have the Thinkpad E16 Intel (i7) version. The storage is two M.2 PCIe Gen4*4 TLC OPAL 2242 SSD and this storage cannot be found only at Lenovo for a very high price. The AMD version has 1 * 2242 and 1 x 2280 SSD. The 2280 SSD is also made by other manufacturers. If anyone has successfully installed 2242 memory from other manufacturers in the Intel version, I would like to hear about it. You don't have to pull off the battery interface from mainboard, instead, you can disable the internal battery power by BIOS setting, in addition, my laptop uses Intel i7-13700H, but found out there is a bit of electric current sound around the CPU , the sound would be generated by some indcutors or mosfets.

With cashback, sales tax holiday, and student discount, I got spec'd mine out with the 400 nit higher resolution screen, Ryzen 5, 8GB, 256GB (will upgrade both on my own), backlit keyboard, IR Camera, & fingerprint sensor for $530 USD.
I could have got the R7 version for $70 more but I figure it was probably overkill for what I needed and only added about 10%-15% performance boost.
It's a great value overall. I had an e590 I purchased back in 2019ish. It served me well but the 8th gen Intel U series chip was showing its age. So I compare this machine to that.
    Here are some considerations:
    - it's lighter than Lenovo advertises, I got the Aluminum (Lenovo says is heavier than the plastic version) and it is under 4lbs!
    - it shows A LOT of fingerprints and hand oil
    - Keyboard is solid but not quite as good as Thinkpads in the past. They really tried to make this thinner but in the process, as mentioned in the video, made the key height lower (key travel) is still good. So It's not as nice to type with.
    - I might have gone with the plastic version if I had the option to change my mind.
    - Screen is nice but I am skeptical of the 100%SRGB, colors do seem kinda washed out

Crazy thing is I looked up the benchmarks of the laptop I5 chip and it's about the same in performance as my desktop I5-12400F. So technically there's nothing stopping me from getting this thing hooked up to a dedicated GPU and turning it into a bit of a gaming beast!

45 % NTSC is crap compared to 100% sRGB (closer to 72% NTSC). You can compare it with your phone screens. 45 % NTSC will have washed out colors like the older TN panels. The only benefit 45 % NTSC IPS screens give over the older TN panels is the viewing angle.

This is as due to the TDP (power) limit of the chip, the extra 2 cores won't lead to significantly greater performance.
Older Ryzen 7s used to have worse iGPUs than the Ryzen 5, but this 7000 series chip does have a faster iGPU in the Ryzen 7.
In a similar vein, the Ryzen 7 does have slightly more cache, the R5 has 3/4th of it but still a decent amount.
So the Ryzen 7 is objectively a better chip in every way that counts, but not to the extend that would justify the $200 price increase in his region.
If it is a $50 upgrade for you, it would be good value to take the upgrade though.

I'm typing on one now. I like the keyboard, it's like a 7/10 whereas my ThinkPad X1E's keyboard is more like a 9/10. It doesn't feel quite as solid. Maybe it's an 8/10. It's definitely one of the best laptop keyboards I've used until I've gotten spoiled using my X1E's keyboard.
I'm completely amazed at what Lenovo has brought to market for so little money. They should sell these things like hotcakes. Great screen, very good keyboard, USB-C charging, great weight. I'm just waiting to find out what the catch is. I upgraded the battery like you did but otherwise got the base model. It plays Divinity Original Sin very well so it meets my classic gaming needs too.

I bought an E16 gen2 with Ryzen 7735HS CPU. Let me share my (bad) experience.
The overall build was okay, however there was a noticable frame flex if I grabbed the edge of the laptop. The bottom sides were a bit too sharp too, where the aluminum cover met the frame.
My laptop was equipped with the basic 300 nit 1920x1200 screen. The brightness was okay for me, but the colors, the contrast, and the overall quality were terrible.
The red color was orange, the screen was not sharp enough and the LEDs had some flickering too. It was awful. I had a headache and pain in my eyes after 20 minutes of work. A $300 entry Acer/Asus machine has a much better screen. It is a shame. I had the higher level 680M GPU, but it did not help anything.
The PC worked with both Windows and Linux without driver issues, however, I had some screen tearing under both operating systems.
Finally, I returned my E16, and bought an Asus Zenbook for the same price, instead. It has a beautifull OLED screen, Thunderbolt (Intel Evo) connectors, it does not flex and has a better design. The only downside is the lower number of USB-A ports and the missing RJ45 interface. I did not regret the change.
So I do not recommend this PC as it has an awful screen and the build quality has nothing to do with the older Thinkpads or the higher T/P series. It has more frame flex than a $300 Asus Celeron. 😂

I would like to know which one to choose between these thinkpad e16 gen 2:
    Intel 125h+8gb ram: USD783
    Ryzen 7535hs+8gb ram: usd716
    Or,
    Victus 16 Ryzen 8645hs+ryx4050+16gb ram: usd650
My main use case is office productivity, photoshop. Mostly plugged-in clamshell connecting to an 27” external monitor and maybe 1-2 days use in usual laptop mode.
Which one do you reckon? Thanks in advance

@TechGuyBeau could you please help out a bit here. I'm thing about purchasing this for Web Dev, I've got Dell displays so the screen restriction for my country can be worked around.
What I'm having the issues with are the processors, trying to stay on a budget here.
R5 7530U vs i5-1335U vs i7-1355U. I'll be running VSCode and Web browsers pretty much, with a Virtual Machine here and there which the RAM has covered (24GB should suffice).
I'm leaning twards the i5-1335U since it seems to be most bang for the back. Am I missing something here? Please advise, if possible.

Also, HDMI is the old 1.4b on AMD CPUs for some reason, only intel have 2.1. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why not just keep 2.1 on all E-series thinkpads? What memory card did you actually install into your E16?
I bought and have installed a Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM memory card into my E16, thereby increasing the memory from 8gb of soldered memory, to 24gb.
I’ve noticed that the display no longer activates despite the laptop showing signs of being on.

@@TechGuyBeau I have a Lenovo Thinkpad notebook at work and the ventilation is at the bottom and the openings are relatively small. The ventilation holes quickly get covered with dust. I have to clean it once a week.

What is your opinion about the nipple on the keyboard other than that it provides a differentiation in the look

It’s great for when typing, don’t need to move hand much. If you’ve never used it before you will need some practice to get used to it. But you can also easily ignore it

      What does "higher customization" mean?

I think because this is a cheap laptop so they use 7030 because they can cheap out and use ddr4 ram instead of more expensive ddr5
Also one thing I found out is laptop nowadays only use 7030u and 7040u and I’ve never seen any laptop using middle spec 7035u for the laptop
