I got to meet Ken Hensley in the 70's. Wish I could remember the year. I think it was 78 or 79. He was at a record store in the Denver area promoting their latest album, I believe and they announced it on the radio. He was living in Vail or Aspen at the time I think. Anyway, the dude was super cool. I walked in and he was just standing there by himself. I had brought my Demons & Wizards album and I asked him to sign it and of course he did. It's one of my most prized items. Then we just shot the shit for about 10 minutes. He was just so down to earth even though he was one of the most talented musicians of all time. One of the greatest memories of my life.

So it's sad that they had so much conflict in the band. A group of fantastic musicians who didn't get together because their egos were too big. From today's point of view it is almost a mystery that such good music came out of it.

Gary Mervin Thain(1948). Was a New Zealand Bassist and was the Third Bass Player to join Uriah Heep! His career began in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 15th May 1948. And Sadly passed away in Norwood Green on 8th December 1975. he was only 27 years old! He played in several local bands before joining Keef Hartley Band 1968-1972. Who played at Woodstock USA, August 1969. Then, he went on to join Uriah Heep in 1972-1975.
He suffered from a severe electric shock from being electrocuted on stage and indulging in taking Heroin. The Result of his Death was Respiratory Failure.
His Bass playing was first class and he played mainly with his fingers through Acoustic 360/370 watt Amp/cabs.
He inspired many fellow Contemporary players with his own Unique Percussive style and still does so Today! Self taught and full of his own exuberance that Up and coming Players are still Inspired by, Today.
A Truely Remarkable, Many Fascinating, muscians muscian!

Possibly the best bass player in rock music, he didn't have a huge catalog of music like some other bass players, however, many musicians, famous and not famous, drummers singers, guitar players, have said they thought Gary was the best bass player in Rock music, he's intricate, and if you listen how he plays, that nit a style most people know....cool

The famous line up 1974 before byrons alcoholism destroyed uriah heep one year later. Here the harmonies and classic hard rock were superb, ken hensley stole the distorted organ sound, pumping out of all speakers, totaly underrated band so cool and groovy.. they had it all

    • @dosikband

Egos destroyed the band. Not alcoholism only. Ken and Gary were taking drugs. Not only David's: Mick had been a heavy drinker too.
