As someone who claims generation-Y (the people after or on the cusp of gen-x but well before or separated from millennials), I always felt that my generation looked at the baby boomers and regan's policies and quickly migrated to the counter, alternative, or sub-cultures because we recognized how dangerous pop culture and conformity could be. (also because our parents generation were often lazy and ineffectual) But now I fear that the younger generations are flocking to join the illegitimate authority
If the government actually bothered to improve public education even a LITTLE bit then we wouldn't have 1/2 the problems we have now in 20 years or so, because people would actually be SMART and EDUCATED!

When you're brought up with a focus on obeying authority it's tough to grow a desire to think critically. especially young girls like me who were predisposed to images of women obeying men in powerful positions.

The best thing that i'd learnt from Jello & The Dead Kennedys back in the late 80s was this: 'think for yourself'; the media it's (here in Spain and most of Europe) the "offcial version" much in the Gulf of Tonkin "incident" style, you see or hear the story and have to go and look for the alternate versions and with all that... figure out what could be the truth, now some of us, we're doing what what the journalists should be doing, dig for the truth and spray it among those who want to listen; it's dangerous and exhausting, i'm getting very tired of the assholes on booth sides, the faszists and the dogmatics (faszists too IMO) but even tired im not dead yet, so i'll keep trying to make of this shithole world a better place, i know that's the right thing. The only nitpicky thing I would respond is the following: unlike Time and Newsweek, I don't think People ever really harbored any pretensions of being a serious "news" source. That does however raise a sobering point: the distinction between People, whose primary purpose is arguably to provide a bit of fluff to occupy patients until the doctor's ready to see them, and ostensibly more "serious" publications like Time and Newsweek gets subtler every year...
Newsweek, TIME and Business Insider have had some great articles on this administration alongside WaPo, NYTimes and the LATimes since they came under new ownership among others. It all really boils down to excercising critical thinking skills and skepticism in your media consumption and I don't think Jello spent enough time explaining that point, but just wanted to show off his newspaper clipping collection.
Well, I'd admittedly be lying if I were to suggest that I've read Newsweek or Time other than in public places when I've had time to kill - laundromats, hospital lobbies, etc. That being said, the great articles you allude to notwithstanding, I thought Jello was right to take them to task for peddling such lowest common denominator, pandering, fear-mongering, sensationalistic fare. And his "showing off" (which I think is a bit harsh) aside, it does seem as though they return to that well a lot. Which, to my mind anyway, casts a doubt regarding their level of objectivity and journalistic integrity, because that should be beneath them. It's possible that their new ownership warrants a closer look, so maybe I'll read them the next few times that I go to the library.
