As a flutter dev their installer is VERY well done! I'm very excited to see what else they bring to the flutter/linux ecosystem, especially as I've noticed a lot of Flutter-Rust developer job listings for Canonical recently.
@@catto-from-heavenIn my case this flutter installer was just "flut", what in my native language means "no good" / "worthless". It kept on crashing. This is already so much better than 22.04. Thank you Ubuntu for such a polished release. I have to say, I am very shocked on how well 24.04 looks. In fact, I am running 24.04 as of right now. I just can't get over how neat and pretty it looks lmao

I like the generic utility names, it's a royal pain needing to test the webcam but I can't recall if it is called 'Cheese', 'Gouda', 'Brie' or whatever . I simply need to look for camera because I need to test the camera. Since I use different distros in different situations having generic names for some things is quite helpful to me at least.
My guess is Gnome took the complaint about the weird names open source used to heart and started naming by function. I never have been a fan of that. If you must go that route, than the about boxes should be pretty clear about what the actual app name is. I think Web was Epiphany or something. I've no idea what Terminal or calculator are. The application names are too generic and make it harder to find information about them. At least KDE usually throws the k in front. Looking for man pages is nasty when you don't know what the name of the application is.
one thing i noticed in the app center is that it doesn't tell you if the app is already installed; you need to select it first and see if it has the option to install or open. would be nice if there was some indication when browsing like an icon to show that it is already installed. I guess it's ok for the novice user but for more experienced users, install the synaptic package manager for more control and filtering options.
I have been using this for the last few weeks and I FINALLY got Steam to work. It would install and I would see the Icon in the top, but it wouldnt open after the first time. If anyone has an issue with it, once you install it and start it for the first time, you have to go to settings and turn off hardware acceleration for web and it works for some reason.
I was trying things out today. Fallout 4 works pretty good on it. And i use logos bible study software which is not native at all but the guys that take care of that install script have done a great job getting it to work and it installed easier than i have ever had it install on 24.04 LTS
Probably a bigger deal for those of us using Proxmox or other remote VMs but I have to say the "Remote Access" feature on Ubuntu 24.04 seems WAAAAY better so far, I can straight up run a VM with RDP and it's near butter smooth!
I was excited for this release like most, but it didn't take me long to run into issues. I think its going to take a considerable amount of time for a lot of apps to catch up to stable versions for this LTS. I went back to 22.04 and everything worked fine as expected, but since I was downgrading and I prefer gnome I decided to also give PopOS a whirl. Even though 22.04 was solid PopOS felt faster and snappier; especially when comparing the app stores. Pop having flatpak out-of-the-box and it running smooth as butter was a big surprise. The cosmic desktop felt alright, but it's still gnome at the end of the day. Maybe an unpopular take, but I think PopOS might actually do Ubuntu LTS better than Canonical does. I've used Ubuntu almost exclusively for many years, but I think I might be a Pop guy now.
I recently came back to Linux (started using Ubuntu as a daily driver back in '09 with Karmic Kuala) but stopped using it in 2011 and just came back to it 2024 with the new release of 24.04 LTS... I don't know why people make a big deal out of snaps, it works perfectly fine on my system... I also gotta say, I peaked under-the-hood (apparmor and snaps sandbox) just really impressed with Ubuntu!
DT have you ever produced a video outlining the steps necessary to migrate to a new version of a given OS? Like, what dotfiles and whatnot would be necessary to recreate environment on a fresh install?
I didn't install it fresh but did an "upgrade" from 22.04. It was a horror show. In all my years using Ubuntu I have NEVER had such a bad time. Back to 22.04.
_yeah - installed it yet.. the thing is: closing Gimp leads to a horrible crash (of Gimp). Valgrind gave me a hint to solve the issue; I installed the canberra-gtk-module_
Running on 24.04 right now. It's a great Linux distro, and I would recommend this to anyone. Except that, on my first try, it can't decrypt my ZFS drive, seems like an issue with swap, which I think should be zRAM already. And the buggy "Enhanced" tiling that would crash the entire system, kicked me out of the session, when I double-click on the GNOME top bar. Nonetheless, ZFS runs great on the system. Excellence distro!
In my opinion this is the best Ubuntu despite the bugs. Let's star saying that the boot time is the fastest of any distro around. The esthetic is impressive and the responsiveness and driver compatibility is number one. Yes. There are several bugs like snap store failing to update, etc ... and need to install Gdebi in order to install downloaded deb files, otherwise impressive
I am about to purchase an Arc A770 graphics card. According to the documentation I can find, This distro is the only on to have OFFICIAL support for the Arc A770. Is it just me or the App Center in Ubuntu 24.04 won't open ?? I already tried different fixes but none of them works. I did a fresh install on my computer and this is the first time I have this problem. It starts opening when I click on the icon but it closes before I can see a screen totally open
I have an issue with this version of the distro, the media handler now is managed by Pipewire, so the only way that all media features work fine is by resetting Pipewire in every boot or install Cheese, wich does not come preinstalled as before, and other media players to get most of the media working, but the standard installed apps do not work out of the box. Some things are really buggy in this version, and no patches for major issues has been released.
I thought i will never use gnome as a desktop environment but pop!_os changed my mind on it with tilling. So until i wait for the cosmic DE, gnome with forge extension is the way :) since pop os's version stopped being supported.
I installed Ubuntu yesterday and it's been great! my only problem is that the third party driver installer doesn't show the last nvidia driver, it's stuck in 535

Snap packages not always work as expected, because it is some isolation and, for example, in Termius if it from snap local terminal wouldn't work. Or, You can have some other bugs in program that isn't exist in deb package or program can work just little slower. It's not true for all software from snap, but sometimes it can happen.
I wish Ubuntu would come with extension manager and gnome tweaks already installed which almost everyone on the planet ends up having to get anyways. And at 5.7gb, it's as big as Windows 11 now. xubuntu, mate, and lubuntu are much smaller in size. So what's the bloat in ubuntu? I have tried to install it, but not stable yet. As a software engineer, third party application hasn't many support for example docker desktop, azure cli. Maybe I have to wait one year to migrate
They have stopped Deb files to be installed in the software centre, so brand new users to Linux would not know about terminal commands or gdebi. The software centre just spins around when trying to install a deb file. This is bad.

Totally disagree about never having to install a deb. I have had to install many deb packages due to no flatpak or snap. Or the icon doesn't appear in the tray with a flatpak or snap, but does with the deb. Some examples are Megasync and ExpanDrive. I found that Ubuntu 24.04 didn't have the latest Nvidia 550 driver. Also when I tried to use the software manager updates failed. Seems like there are still some bugs and it is better waiting until they get an update.
I'm planning to save up and get an NVmE drive for myself just to see if I can install it. I'll probably move to Arch with KDE plasma, but this is neat while I wait (I installed the dev version and it was alright).
I use fedora, but what strikes me about reviews like this (no offense to you) is that they become less of a review of this distros specific implementation, and more a review of Gnome, which is I assume going to be the same across the board irrespective of distro, as long as they have the same gnome version. I love the quarter tiling feature and can’t wait for that! I felt reviewing the wallpapers was unnecessary however.
@@antoniobaianosvizzero764 Indeed, no need to rush anything. The upgrade from Gnome 42 to Gnome 43 will be more than enough. I'm tired of trying the latest version of everything, especially Gnome. There are some minor improvements and changes, but stability and refined software is a higher priority for me. Now Gnome 43 on Debian is a solid rock.

Ubuntu has become a no go for me in both my desktop and server. I love the quarter tiling feature and can’t wait for that! I felt reviewing the wallpapers was unnecessary however.
Installed as a snapPACK :D
I always like how Ubuntu makes Desktop Linux easier to use than lets say...Arch
Are you in a new studio?
Same studio the past 3~ years

I'm currently using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and I'm not planning on upgrading to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. I will upgrade and switch to Debian 12.

Identical situation. I started the transition 1 month ago (it will be quite slow)

@@AaronStarkLinux We're on the same page. As a beginner, it made sense for me to choose Ubuntu, but after 5 years there's no reason of not running Debian.
What did you use to edit and create the artwork with for this video?
Ubuntu has become a no go for me in both my desktop and server. I really cannot get behind them forcing everything to the snap store especially since canonical are the only ones in control of the snap store. I feel too many people gushing over the wonders of the new lts fail to mention this critical fact. It is a shame but at least for me it has made me change to fedora for desktop and redhat enterprise for my servers
Hello , I am interested with dual boot with windows 11 pro . Kindly make one of it too .
Hey DT, why is there no animations in your Ubuntu vm? Is it like that by default?
