    Great footage of Ken Waller training for the 1976 Mr. Olympia. He would win the Heavy weight class. The footage of Franco is from Franco training in his home GARAGE for the 1976 Mr. Olympia. He was in Chiropractic school and did not have the time to spare to go to the gym. It was either he or Arnold that expressed that everyone thought Franco was jeopardizing his '76 Olympia preparation because no one thought a garage gym would provide the level of equipment or "atmosphere" needed to train properly for such a high level event.

    WOW!! This is a true relic! Straight from the iron vault. . much of what could have been in Pumping Iron..wonder who filmed it, as it was focusing a lot on Ken and some on Franco. .
    RIP, Giant Killer. . still can't believe it.
    Thank you so much for unearthing this cult clip.
    Really appreciate it.

    Best thing about this for me is seeing the original Gold’s as it was..the inside, the equipment including some custom pieces, the sounds, the fact that any great Venice gym should be right off the beach, as Gold’s and the Dungeon were; thus sufficiently casual as to allow bare feet. And of course the physiques, using only oral/injectibles, still with that athletic look that went away in subsequent decades.

    • @mac_-mtlmcal

      Of course, training in bare feet is a great idea! Nothing bad can happen from that, nothing at all!!!!!!!

      Best thing about this is seeing Gold’s as it actually was..if you’re in Venice a gym like Gold’s or the Dungeon should be right off the beach, and casual (no shoes), even street noise. And when they were only using orals/injectibles, an athleticism that was lost in subsequent decades.

    • @mopar1465
      @mopar1465 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jason Striation the gyms I use to belong to played rock/heavy metal music over the speakers. Bust each other's balls and tell them they were a fat weak piece of shit, made for a good workout. Now it's hard to even get a spot cause they're glued to their cell phone and have on big dumbass headphones. Hard to get motivated some days.

    • @thomass789
      @thomass789 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Seems like an awful lot of negativity here, complaining about how other people are making your gym experience negative.
      As long as the other people in your gym are not interfering with your workout, why do you care if they are taking selfies, or wearing headphones that are larger than the headphones you like, looking at their phone, etc?
      Do I think someone wearing a hoodie in a temperature controlled gym is odd? Um, yeah, sure do. But it doesn't affect my workout.
      If the 19 year old girl wants to take pics of herself, or some other guy wants to look at his phone for 10 minutes between sets, that's not going to prevent me from having a good workout. I refuse to let it.
      Pretty much anyone in my way, gets out of my way, and the lack of socializing between those of us who are grown ups (I am assuming most of us watching classic bodybuilding vids) and kids half to one-third of our age, shouldn't be an issue, unless you have some strange desire to have conversations with people 2 or 3 decades younger than you.
      Bottom line, learn to focus on you more and dial it in better.

    Never saw this before! Great film. What's interesting is that the 2 guys in the video, Franco and Waller, both wound up that year posing against each other in the final posedown at the 1976 Olympia. Waller won the over 200 class and Franco the under 200 class. Franco, of course, won the overall Olympia. Franco stayed out of Gold's that year and did all of his training in his backyard gym. There's video out there of him training Sylvester Stallone in that same home gym. RIP Franco.

    • @hardcorehouse
      @hardcorehouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The preacher curls at the end might’ve been his home gym. No coincidence they both did well at the Olympia; they were both Weider boys, thus protected against better BBs who would’ve beaten them such as Oliva and Nubret, who didn’t bother entering knowing the politics. No way in hell was Columbu ever world’s best built man.

    • @edmundkemp2280
      @edmundkemp2280 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardcorehouse I think Franco's biggest flaw was that he was too short and stubby. A taller, more aesthetic bodybuilder like Serge Nubret was way ahead of Franco. The Weider politics was obvious, and the most obvious was that terrible, dark time in bodybuilding history when Franco, suffering from a bad case of heavy gyno, won the 1981 Mr. Olympia nonetheless. That one just blows my mind. God, if ever there was a fix.

    • @hardcorehouse
      @hardcorehouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And, his arms never compared with the torso.

    • @WhyAreTheyOverHere
      @WhyAreTheyOverHere 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hardcorehouse Nubrets left/right side of the the body had poor symmetry. He had an asymmetrical waist as well and that is why it is rare to find him doing front poses straight on. He had high lats that got lost in overhead poses so he always slanted his arm shots. His thighs were not balanced to his upper body (even for 70's standards) and his calves were under developed for his thighs.
      Oliva always suffered on conditioning and muscle control. His best condition was 1972 and actually he looked his best off stage in the shots that were taken by Author Jones. I wouldn't argue that either of them wanted to play the way the whole Weider game.

    • @hardcorehouse
      @hardcorehouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never in the decades I’ve seen him have I thought about the balance issue you’re suggesting. As far as “high lats” it’s not something I’ve thought about nor would it matter given that he still had less drawbacks from pretenders like Columbu who was not only too short n squat he also lacked specialness outside of a great torso. Arms, legs not nearly enough.

    405 with no tension in his muscles and zero rise in blood pressure. If you have ever pressed 405 raw even if you are a 700 presser it makes you experience tension and you don't perform reps that look like you are demonstrating a Bowflex. Total BS which is why they only show the bar when they close in on waller. He's stronger than Ronnie Coleman, Dallas McCarver, Nick walker ah no if you disagree it means you have never lifted 2/3s of this weight and at 220 on less drugs but stronger than most powerlifting champions I am going to say BS

    Back when they didn’t do GH, that’s real bodybuilding if you ask me, now a days they are walking pharmacies. And that’s the kind of gym I grew up with, pure steel, no fancy machines.

    • @lauralee6622
      @lauralee6622 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HGH was very expensive back then and limited in availability while the more exotic growth factors were not yet developed. However, moderate doses of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) were used. The drugs only worked in the conditions of intense training and disciplined dieting, and many of the bodybuilders of this era did experience adverse side effects. The typical 'stack' included: Bulking Cycle - 10 Weeks
      : Sustanon 250. 1 cc, week 1; 2 cc, weeks 2-10; Dianabol, 5 mg tablet. 1 tablet daily, week 1-2; 3 tablets daily, weeks 3-8; 2 tablets daily, week 9; 1 tablet daily, week 10.; Anadrol 50. 1/2 tablet daily, week 2; 1 tablet daily, weeks 3-9. Cutting Cycle - 12 Weeks
      : Nandrolone phenylpropionate, 100 mg. 1 cc, week 1; 2 cc, twice weekly, weeks 2-11; 1 cc, twice weekly, week 12. Primobolan, 100 mg. 1 cc, twice weekly, week 1; 2 cc, twice weekly, weeks 2-12. Winstrol, 5 mg tablets. 2 tablets daily, week 1; 3 tablets, twice daily, weeks 2-12.

      Laura Lee
      I remember the first time I tried Primobolan, I was only taking a shot every 2 weeks and I was really scared, then I found out they were doing a lot more than me, but I never did any of the other drugs you’ve listed, maybe that’s why I never became huge, sounds like a lot!

    • @hardcorehouse
      @hardcorehouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding was that it was mainly just D and Deca, maybe a little Primo. Don’t know about those others, though that list certainly sounds authentic. In any case, those combos were clearly such that the athletic look was retained that has now been lost in subsequent decades. Any idea how much of the year cycles were done then?

      @@hardcorehouse the guys usually went drug free after the fall contest season until the serious training began late spring. Also, the amount of food was reduced to a "normal" level until the bulking phase began.

    • @hardcorehouse
