Let's travel to American Samoa and let's visit Aunu'u, a small volcanic island off the southeastern shore of Tutuila in American Samoa in the Pacific Ocean. It has a land area of 374.83 acres (0.59 sq mi; 1.52 km2) and a of 476 persons.
Aunuu Island, also spelled Aunu‘u, is a volcanic island off the east coast of Tutuila, American Samoa, in the south-central Pacific Ocean.
Aunu’u is a very small volcanic island that is considered to be a big natural landmark which is located in the unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean, the Territory of American Samoa.
We are going to cross the stormy strains between Tutuila (the main island of American Samoa) with a catamaran and we will visit the small village at first. Then we will walk along the coast and visit the lakes around the volcano and in the centre of the crater...

That is my Father's village. Looks like the tide is high so you did not get to see the mud or what they consider like a quick sand type lake. It smells horrible when it's muddy.lol If you want to learn more details on the history of Aunu'u it wouldn't hurt to pay one of the locals to give you a tour. There's a mango tree at the very top of the mountain and you can get a great view of the red lake which is called "vaisuatoto". That mango tree was the village evacuation meeting point if there was a major hurricane. I have so many fond memories visiting Aunu'u... Thank you for sharing your visit.

If you visit Pala Lake on Google Maps, it looks like a crap ton of dead fish in the water. Also many of the trees around the perimeter of the lake look dead. I wonder what happened there?

I think that the dead trees resulted from salt water infiltration. Did you taste the water?
I doubt if Red Lake is a salt water lake and that is because it is in the centre of the crater and higher than the surface of the ocean, it consists of rain water collected over the thousands of years since the volcano was created. The trees in the first lake that you saw (Pala Lake) is lightly salted and the trees that you saw were not dead, there were hundreds of trees with leaves and thriving..
