Just finished 2 log cabins organised my strips how you did but with the second one I sorted the strips for individual blocks and then clipped them together this made it even quicker and easier if I had to pack up inbetween or to take them to my sewing group, just popped them into my project box and off I went to a day of sewing, chatting and drinking coffee with my quilting friends without any stress of sorting for the next block.😍

Thank you for such a great tutorial Katrina! I love your easy and calm approach to sewing a quilt top. I made a log cabin quilt for my Mom. After making the first block much the same as you have done in this video, I decided to chain piece the rest of the blocks. What I did to make it as easy a possible is that I numbered the stacks of squares and strips 1 - 12. So I first chain pieced all of numbers 1 and 2 then pressed and I continued chain piecing and pressing all of number 3, then 4, then 5, etc. until I had the blocks complete. I found it so enjoyable that I cannot wait to make another one! Happy stitching. 😊

Thanks from South Jordan, Utah. I love the log cabin block. It is my favorite. I have made it the traditional way, or swapped out the center for different colors. I also have moved the center to the corner or just off center. I have used several different widths and made the blocks 18 inches square. I have made large quilts and tiny quilts with it. I have also used 1 inch strips!!! It was great to see that demo of my favorite block!

Hello Katrina, I was in the Sewing Studio only yesterday picking up a jelly roll and background fabric to make a log cabin quilt. I’ve never attempted one before, it looked quite daunting but I have a pattern so thought I’d give it a go. Your tutorial will really help get me started. I need to do as you did and organise the strips better. I had a go yesterday but they went everywhere! 😊

I made a log cabin quilt top using black and white prints, and of course I had my red center. I just haven't been able to come up with how to quilt it. I thought about tieing it by hand, or the standard go to - stitch in the ditch. I just can't decide. I'd love to know what you decide to do. I love the colors you used in your tutorial. Thanks for sharing.

I made two of those for my two boys for Christmas one year! They had a space, Star Wars, Halloween theme as well. Love the red center.

Hello! Katrina said she would machine quilt it in a cross hatch pattern!
We actually have a tutorial on how best to mark up your quilt in the cross hatch style here: th-cam.com/video/XiRYBV4sA5I/w-d-xo.html

How much of a tradition are log cabin blocks in the U.K.? I would have guessed the the log cabin was a little more a U.S. thing? I love quilting across the ocean with Katrina!

Hello Laura. Log Cabins have definitely gotten more popular in the UK, in recent years. Although the Log Cabin block did originate from the US - they are almost at equal popularity here in the UK!

I watch you an on iPad and am helplessly ignorant on operation. When you say that the details are below, where do you mean please? Is it possible to purchase an equal number of light and dark strips in one jelly roll? Would you need two jelly rolls for a full size quilt? I apologize for so many questions I understand you are busy.
