  • Stilo is a Calabrian village of Greek origin -which has had a long and rich history- in fact, its name derives from the Greek Stylon which means "column", due to its elevated position on Mount Consolino. Stilo is famous for its Byzantine architecture, particularly the Cattolica, a small five-domed church dating back to the 10th century. Stilo is included in the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The historic center is made up of small streets, majestic noble palaces, churches and above all the surrounding walls with towers and city gates. Finally, the Dolphin Fountain, called Gebbia, is an important testimony to the Arab influence in local culture, as it celebrates the expulsion of Emperor Otto. It is located on the road that leads to the Duomo, just before passing the ancient city gate. The Cathedral of Stilo was built in the 14th century and almost completely rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century. It seems that the feet walled into the façade of the church belonged to a statue representing the demolished idol of the first Christians. The city of Stilo was a bishopric, and then aggregated to that of Squillace. In the town there were five convents among which there were abbeys headed by an abbess or an abbot in the case of San Giovanni Therestis. Among the illustrious figures there were Cardinal Guglielmo Sirleto, the philosopher Tommaso Campanella, the painter Francesco Cozza and the famous cosmographer Domenico Vigliarolo, who occupied the place of Amerigo Vespucci at the Court of Madrid. The first education of these characters took place in Stilo, which had schools of higher learning in its convents.
The Norman Castle of Stilo was built in 1072 AD. by the conquerors of the village of Stilo. Built by Roger the Norman in the second half of the 11th century, this medieval castle dominates the surrounding area unchallenged. It was surrounded by various defense works that made it impregnable and several of these can still be identified along the slope of Mount Consolino.

Saluti dall'Italia (Reggio Calabria)
