  • Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquered gold, creating beautiful cracks in bowls, cups or vases. In this video, I explore the history of Kintsugi, the process of breaking and repairing and the philosophy behind the art.

Hi, I am a high school pottery teacher and recently used this video to console my 14-year olds when some of their unfired pieces cracked. They were enthralled by the way you presented the concept and we spoke about it for half an hour! Thank you! They asked me what music you have used in the background as they'd love to do pottery to that soundtrack. Thank you for a beautiful video!

It’s a beautiful concept that means more today than ever before. When things seem broken beyond repair; they can be rebuilt with time and love ❤️

@@ROANOKE01 Its wonderful when this digital platform is used to reach so many, and touch so many people's lives in a positive way. My kids have loved your videos and asked for more, even though it's not in the curriculum. Be blessed and don't stop! Much love from South Africa xx

@@danielengland6896 So true. This global situation has made us rethink how we are presenting our work, teaching online, and our children are hurting in so many ways. I have found teaching pottery to be healing, expressive and an outlet for emotions. Our God was the first potter, and we are His broken vessels. This amazing concept gets more and more meaningful as time goes on. Be blessed!

“More Beautiful For Having Been Broken”
I absolutely love this, as I’ve held a core belief, my ENTIRE life, that I was broken, these was something inherently wrong with me, that no matter how I tried to do better, my broken pieces fell apart again.

From the video description "Kintsugi is the Japanese art of deliberately breaking and then repairing with gold laquer, creating beautiful cracks in bowls, cups or vases." In the video you describe westerners who are deliberately breaking pottery for the aesthetic as "missing the point". I think you may want to reword your description.

Hi Roanoke! I am creating a video and I am looking for stock footage of Kintsugi. Its not easy to come by. Would you be willing to share a couple of your beautiful shots? I would be happy to compensate you. And I can share the video if you'd like to see how it would be used. Please let me know. Beautiful story!

"Japan finds beauty in the weathered, and the dutifully used."
If only that were actually true; one only needs to look at how Japan treats it's struggling young-adults to know how they really feel.

The Westerners' desires, especially people from the USA where convenience is king, to skip to the end to get the results speaks more about their unconscious beliefs in life due to their upbringing in their Western culture. Telling them that this is not the philosophy behind kintsugi would open their minds to a different perspective in life.
