Kratos is an ancient warrior from Sparta. He has been betrayed by the Gods and has suffered greatly. The game begins with Kratos's quest for revenge and his anger towards the gods.
While living with the burden of his past mistakes and the death of his wife, Kratos is manipulated by his greatest enemy, Ares, the God of War. Ares tries to control Kratos and use him for his own purposes. Kratos embarks on a journey to stop Ares's evil deeds and regain his freedom.
Throughout the game, Kratos battles various Greek gods and mythological creatures. Eventually, Kratos manages to defeat Ares, but he realizes that this victory does not bring him peace or solace. The game ends with Kratos's inner conflicts and his escape from hell, but he has not yet found peace.
This game marks the beginning of Kratos's hatred towards the gods, and the story deepens in the subsequent games.
