    Congratulations on your new position! Fellow Alabama teacher here! Kindergarten is an ENTIRELY different world on its own. They are going to seem like such tiny babies to you at first, but they are capable of achieving so much. My advice is to be careful of the fonts you use in your classroom. You have emergent readers, so cute cursive or all caps are not going to be useful for them. The majority of what they will read and write are lowercase print letters. Also, expect some to come in with no school experience at all, so raising a hand if they need you, asking to go to the bathroom, and walking in a line are going to be brand new concepts for them. Be patient, be consistent and kind with your routines - they'll get it. You will probably be exhausted for August and September, but things will start clicking as far as routines, procedures, and classsroom managment by October. It is a precious age group to teach!

    For kindergarten, you have to "saturate" them with literacy. Put word cards that identify classroom objects so they can see how they're spelled.

    Found it oddly satisfying to watch you mop the wall. It's always terrific to be on the good side of custodians! Looking forward to seeing more of your new adventure.

      I definitely won some brownie points with ours, lol!! I figured the walls would never be that bare again so I better do it now! Thanks for watching!

    One of my center activities was " Read the Room". They worked in pairs( a peanut butter partner & a jelly partner). I gave them a yard or meter stick. They would take turns reading words as they touch them on all levels around the room. The stick was so they could reach the words at the top of the wall

    WOW! Washing the walls. Bravo to you! As a NYC teacher for 37 years, never have I ever cleaned the walls. The custodians usually do it as long as there is no summer school.
    Congrats on your new position. Here for the ride.

    I just finished my 7th year teaching kindergarten and am moving up to 5th grade for this upcoming school year. My biggest piece of advice is to be patient but firm. Set firm guidelines and expectations and always follow through. And LOTS of modeling! Have them mirror to show they understand. Many people think the littles are naive but they are very clever and know when and if they can push your boundaries. 😂

      That is what I keep hearing! I'm more on the tough-love side for sure, so hopefully that will help!

    Welcome to kindergarten! I teach K in California and I love it! My advice is to take a lot of time to explain, model and practice all of your classroom expectations. You will need to show them how to sit on the rug, how to line up, how to hold a pencil correctly, how to use a glue stick, how to use scissors, how to use the school bathroom, etc. Most of them know nothing about school unless they went to preschool or TK. Also, they will all want your undivided attention 24/7. Teach them what you expect from a "good listener". Learn some fingerplays and songs. When the kids are talking a lot or not listening and you want to get their attention, sit down and start singing a song or doing a fingerplay. The kids will stop what they are doing and start singing along. Dr. Jean has many wonderful videos for you to use. The first month will be exciting and exhausting, but you will survive and it gets easier. The best thing about kindergarten is seeing the amazing academic and social-emotional growth throughout the year! Good luck!

    You're better than me to wipe down all your walls. If there are some stubborn stains that wouldn't come off, maybe you could try Mr. Clean's magic eraser? Just a suggestion.

      I will probably do that for those spots! I also have to get some hot glue off the walls too

    Every day at Morning Meeting, we greeted each other in a special way. I usually take each student's picture the first day of school. I get them printed out.
    Then I put the pictures on index cards( I used the pastels.), write each child's name under the picture, and laminated them. I punched a hole at the bottom and put it on a ring so they're almost like flash cards. I even made one for myself with a picture of me in kindergarten.
    We would stand in a circle. Next, I would give the stack to the person whose pic was on top and say, " Good Morning, so andcso." S(he) would flip their picture and give it to the kid on the next card.
    If someone was absent, we'd say, " We miss you, so and so.,"We did that until everyone had been greeted. I mixed up the pix every few days to keep it fresh.
    As time went on, I taught them how to say Good Morning in several languages. Then, they had a choice of how to greet their classmates.

    I've taught kindergarten 3 1/4 times. One thing I did was set up a word wall. The first words I put on there were the students' names. It shoes them how to spell their names and their classmates ', too. It also gives them buy-in for learning new words. Or you could make a sound wall( based on the Science of Reading , which in style right now.

    • @homesweetclassroom1
      @homesweetclassroom1  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We use a program that recommends the sound wall so I will be putting one up soon! I have a training next week to refresh on everything!

    Most primary grades have a Morning Message. It's usually on an easel or chart paper. It has the date and 2-4 sentences about what they were going to do that day or even ask a question of the day.
    I had taught older grades before then and knew what they would need to do in the future. So, I taught them punctuation using sounds.
    When we would see a period, we'd smack our lips and use our index finger to draw it in the air.
    For exclamation points, we'd say, "Boingggg!" and draw it in the air.
    Question marks we used a high-pitched questioning sound, and for commas, we'd make a sound like car brakes.
    My hope was when they had to write sentences in the higher grades, they'd remember those sounds and write accordingly.

      I definitely think that teaching an older grade will benefit me so that I can have that mentality of "where are they going and what do they need to know?" I am excited to see what this year holds!

      I think I got the cardboard letters from either Michael’s or Hobby Lobby and then hot glued the puff balls to them!

    Such a sweet classroom. Might not be very helpful (because it could be taken negatively in terms of not taking you seriously as their teacher depending on how you portray it), but maybe you could tell your students that it is your first year as a kindergarten teacher too and use this to connect to them being new also?! Once again, could be potentially perceived either good or bad, though, maybe.

    • @homesweetclassroom1
      @homesweetclassroom1  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I definitely think I will share with both parents and students that it is my first year with the Kinders! I have found that being open and honest is the best way to go, and both parents and students appreciate transparency. Thank you for the advice!
