Can you set it to equip/power up runes in between rerolling? That way you might not need mentors?

No, unfortunately. This will increase too much the average time. Currently, the best solution to avoid looking for mentors is: create 5 accounts, get Lapis (you can get them done before lv15, which is pretty easy) and add them in your reroll instances. Friends are not removed after resetting the account and Lapises are very reliable to clear til Faimon.
