Dishevelled and defeated after my 2,00km cycle across Japan, on the final day of my journey in Kagoshima, I spent the morning learning the local martial art (Jigen-Ryu). It was a surprisingly fun experience and a fantastic end to the trip, even if I look half dead. Special thanks to Alex at the People of Kagoshima channel for having us! Pity it takes a few years to per-fect this skill . That , and that now after WW2 #Japan is military neutral ~ otherwise I'd ask you Chris " Is there any chance the teacher there would send an elite team of warriors to Ukraine 🇺🇦 to scare 😱 and dismember Russian soldiers back over the border vowing Never to invade Ukraine ever again . 😏🤳🇦🇺🇳🇴
Thanks for visiting and for the shout out! Kagoshima has seen you beating tree trunks with a stick and flying over an active volcano so far. I'm wondering what's going to happen next time you visit 😳
@@abhijeetambadekar6004 The future samurai, following this trend I'm inclined to say either fried chicken or maybe Ryotoro if he is feeling like a murderer samurai...
I could be wrong but judging by the training method's this looked like Jigen-Ryu's school of swordsmanship. The school is known for its "monkey scream" to stun the opponent as the swordsman charges forward with full offense...hence the number strikes they train per day on a solid beam 😬😬😬, apparently this school focuses so heavily on offense - theres almost no defensive techniques. Its one of the prestigious schools recognised by the Japanese Budo associations too! Would love to see Chris or Tokyo Lens, or any youtuber to explore more on martial arts Dojos in Japan!
Goodness is this what a cycle across japan does to a man? Seriously, look at his eyes, you can see his soul leaving his body Thanks for your sacrifice Chris, your content is amazing and keeps people waiting for it every week
It's because he spent every night going through his footage he recorded and editing it into videos, after cycling all day. He wasn't getting enough sleep.
Chris slowly and unenthusiastically striking the post reminds me of a scene in Harlem Nights where two guys are shooting machine guns and there’s one guy slowly shooting a pistol. th-cam.com/video/nNXxlYCU0aY/w-d-xo.html
Don't know how you made one syllable sound so British. ha ha. It's nice to see someone trying things out of their comfort zone. I wouldn't be able to. Brave man.
Cover your tracks as You clean, also appear like a complete whacko for the outsider's eye, so you won't have to deal with ignorant folks and can filter students more easily. The wisdom behind this school is formidable!
The screaming is believed to connect the spirit with the striking thus was practiced since ancient Japan, and was actually proved to be effective in real combat/war. Well, If it was me my opponent is screaming eeeeee!!! or aaaaaaa!!! while trying to cut me down I would be disturbed by it.
ROFL... well, yeah, after cycling all of that you could argue that the energy for screaming and the muscle power for handling the sword/stick just wasn't there. xD Kiai in martial arts also shouldn't be something you have to make an effort to produce, but rather something you let out... even if it ends up sounding a bit ridiculous - of course it'll be harder in front of a camera and strangers. xD Just something you eventually get used to, but it takes time, and perhaps a bit of trust.

Have you gotten any opportunities to preemptively beat people with a big stick before they insult your mum?
Missed a zero, dude.

@Abroad In Japan Clips are you sure that should read "2,00km"? Seems like a rather small distance to call it a cycle tour :)
I have a feeling Chris is imagining that the wooden post is Ryotaro 😜
Looking back at these clips, Chris really leaned into this Capt. Jack Sparrow phase. Lol!
The ferocity of Jigen ryu is worthy of respect.
I think mustering the will to embarrass yourself screaming was far more difficult than developing any swordsmanship.
It is just sth like a warcry. It eliminates your fear and boost your adrenaline.
Definitely not. I had to say this even though this comment was probably satire.
Also, your self confidence must be in ruins if you can't yell and have pride in it... All the while you're striking with a sword...
@@williaml.willowfield2220 I mean, I've seen it done in other martial arts, but I feel like with Japanese swordplay, it's particularly high-pitched
I love how close Chris was to losing his marbles in this first Journey Across Japan
I totally forgot about this video. Ken Watanabe must've been in sheer awe of the current Samurai, Chris
So we had Last and Current... Wonder who'll be the Next...

So this is what the Tusken Raiders from Star Wars get up to in their spare time..
The last Kiai in the video was actually pretty good. As with all things: Comes over time with practice, but not bad given the limited time you had.
0:08 you looked so burned out there... it doesnt matter what others say but now you look way better! happy for you chris sama :)
The editing was on point with this video, I loved it!
Why do I have an endless capacity to re-watch anything Chris Broad has ever made?

I love how casual that old guy is when doing it. EEEHHHHHH!!!! > Strait Face , look of "now you".
My throat hurts just watching this 😳 Such ferocity!
As always interesting, informative, entertaining and funny. Thank you Chris Broad and hope you are keeping healthy.

@@AsukasButler Lol I know, just pointing out how apparent it is in this clip.
that sliding step, plus stairs, becomes the "toe-stubber step". That will get you yelling properly, from the pain
0:18 I now know where they got the sounds for the tusken raiders from for star wars.
Back in the days when Chris was somewhat fit and the world was more peaceful, good old days.
Definitely a classic.
Step 1: Yelling
Ty for doing a separate clip for this
Ah, the last step in the legendary odyssey that was the OG Journey Across Japan and the day Chris became the Last Samouraï !
Good times indeed…
That’s why Zenitsu cries and screams
I guess i missed this the first time through but the editing on this as spot on. Im laughing like a school girl at my desk at work.
You did fantastic, Chris lol going back to watch the original video
chris would visualise the post as connor while he unloads on it

I'd do anything to have an opportunity to do this.
Glad you had fun.

That last one really sounded like a Kiai , nice one Chris!
Time to rewatch the first Journey Across Japan again :)
Dayum, I've used that footwork all my life and didn't even know it was a thing.
uzui vs gyutaro
It would be impressive to see the master cleave a mythbusters ballistic gel puppet clean half
Wax on, wax off ~~ Mr Miyagi
Chris has started his journey to become an anime protagonist. Ryotaro beware
Skyrim shout. Cmon chris you know how it goes
Wow Chris u look great! Keep up the great health ❤️
Gradually add some weights to the stick and you'll become as big as Guts from Berserk
Am I the only one who thinks that Chris looks like Tony Stark?
They both sound in great pain.
Ah i remember this was a fun video this was in
The same walk is used in places where there are stingrays, to make sure you don't step on them...
Chris Broad should try Battodo
I want to see Pete try this with his sword. :D
I've been in martial arts for 10 years and I still have to force myself to yell out.
Unoooo Nani Koray?😂
Chris kinda looks like a British version of Tony Stark with that mustache and a short beard
Poor, tired Chris. Probably didn't help you muster up the energy and courage to unleash your inner demon warrior.
aaaaaaaahhhh good old times when chris was half of the man that he is today lol
Wow you looked really sick then.
I would say this is the best shape you've been too bad the price was too much stress and fatigue.
Remarkable ! 😱😮😬👍🙏😎
So just shout "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" ok. Got it.
What video would you recommend, that best sums up your channel, and you. From over 5 years ago?
Those screaming reminds me of pink guy
This further cements my belief that Chris is not really a man to be feared in battle...
😂 esos gritos son graciosos

No outro? O.o
I dont know why, but chris looks so different in this video
Because its a old video
