This video is very thorough and conscientious of all the little safety attention needed. I’ll be changing my glow plugs soon based on this video since no local Machenic wants any part of it and BMW dealer wants to bankrupt me overnight for that. I have summoned enough courage to do it myself! Will keep you posted after the job is completed.

This is a very good video that was super helpful and saved me hours. Don't be intimidated, just take your time. You need a 10 MM deep socket to do the glow plugs. The torque rating for the glow plugs is 15 nm. I left the throttle body on and then took it off to while the manifold was out of the car to replace the gasket which came with the kit. Don't know if that was necessary but I did it because I had the new gasket. Probably easier to pull everything off as shown with the throttle body on. The glow plug control module was a workout, but just be patient and gentle and you will figure it out. I think you HAVE to take off the coolant fitting where the coolant hose connects to the engine as shown in the video to do this job. My biggest workout was getting the final 11mm nut off the very back of the manifold next to the firewall. It is below an electrical clip connection that had to come off for me to get a wrench on the nut. The final hard part for me during disassembly was getting the electrical connection on the very back drivers side of the manifold off without breaking it. Was patient and it finally came off. Went back to together really easy (usually does once you have figured out how to take it apart) and the check engine light is off. My understanding is that glow plug replacement normally needs to happen at about 100K miles. My 2012 X5 had 102,400, so that's about right. I have also been told that it is always a very good idea to change the glow plug control module while everything is apart so you won't be doing the whole process again in a year or two. Great video!!!

Hello Scott, Thanks for watching and thanks for your input. I totally agree with all you have written. It's an easier job once you have done it, and you know what to expect. Yes it's much better to take the coolant hose off to do the module replacing. I'm just glad I saved a ton of money doing it. Thanks for your support and please subscribe if you have not. Thanks.

Lots of good advice, you removed but did not mention the 10mm bolt underneath the throttle body holding the TB brace to the head, clearly seen at 11:53. Once it's off you can see the bracket can stay and the throttle body comes free with a hidden 5mm allen bolt....easier to see it off.
That pos electrical connector to the swirl flap motor that is so hard to get...I just cut the wire to free the manifold, repaired it adding another 8 inches for the next time.
And for sure, delete the swirl flaps while you have the manifold off and also blank the EGR pipe at the throttle body.

Yes this happened to me. Two of my glow plugs snapped while taking them out. The trick to this is to remove them while the engine block is warm, soak them in PB blaster for 15 min and tighten them a little before loosening them.
If you snap off the glow plug you have to push them through into the cylinder and fish them out apparently through the injectors. That didn't work for me and now I have a small piece of glow plug in my cylinder.

Hello and thanks for watching. Sorry but I thought I talked about that in my video, but it probably slipped. I always work on my car cold, so the fluids in the engine are cold and settled. To remove the glow plugs is very easy as long as nothing goes bad. The socket I used was a 10mm extended. If you have a magnetic one that is even better. You probably have these tools in your garage for the plugs. Make sure not to over tighten the glow plugs. I didn't use a torque wrench, I tightened like I would a spark plug. Thanks once again for your support. Good luck

You do not need to remove anything and check it by hand. It seems there is no such spring for sale. I have to replace the whole cooler. I checked online. I'm glad I could help, and thanks for watching. Is the code the same? If you changed all the plugs with OEM or Bosch, you should not get the CEL after 5 days, Make sure it's the same code first. Best of luck.

Where did you buy the glow plug kit with seals and control module

Elan thanks for watching and thanks for your support. These parts are widly available from various web sites, I think I bought the seals from Amazon, and the module and plugs from FCP EURO. It really depends on the availability of each website. The prices are roughly the same.

I got 3 glow plug activation fault codes and several injector fault codes. Can a faulty glowplug controler trigger injector fault codes? Has anyone encountered this. Car randomly switches off whilst driving otherwise runs and starts fine. No smoke or rough running

    • @thanasisdiydad9200

Stavros P I don't know if the controller would trigger a injector fault, but if you change the glow plugs and the controller, you probably would have solved half the codes with roughly 350 dollars. I did not look into the injectors as much, but if you do this work it is easy for you to change the injectors as well. They are exactly opposite of the glow plugs on the cylinder. My glow plug code did in fact go away after this was done. Good luck, and thanks for watching.

@@S-u-p-a I dint get to finish that car myself, because the guy I was fixing it for sold it to his friend as spares or repair. I spoke to the guy that bought it at some point later on and he told me that they changed the glow plug module but some fault codes still persisted and that the car was just randomly cutting out on the motorway and refuse to restart engine for several hours. So then they swapped the ECU and boom problem gone. I'm not saying that's definitely your problem but that's what worked for him. It's just one those problems that you might need to start swapping things untill it's fixed. Unless you have an ECU specialist that can have a look. Unfortunately with these cars anything costs a ton of money that's why some people just walk away before it sucks them in deeper.

@@S-u-p-a forgot to add that I also done a leak down test on the injectors before the car left me and everything looked normal as it should. I'd say it's an ECU problem most likely otherwise it's the controller. Sometimes the ECU shuts the engine down when it detects too many glow plug faults codes either because the controller is faulty or the ECU itself is fooked. I hope this helps. I'm interested to hear how you resolve this. Just a note if you swap ECU it will need reprogramming or swap the ECU, keys, bcm, immo box.

From what I've seen, it seems you did not properly clean the ports and the inside of the intake manifold. Besides, you should have remove the flaps, famous to get loose and create catastrophic engine issues. You also should have walnut blast the ports on the cylinder head to clean the back of the intake valves, relatively easy work once the intake manifold is off. Cleaning the EGR valve would have been much ever as well since when the intake was off. performance and fuel economy and greatly restored after intake valves and manifold are properly clean from the situated soot.

If you have your BMW made in USA, you might better take a look how the flaps attached. They can be attached with studs or with screws and the ends of the screws is flatted permanently, so its no way they'll be loose. The European BMW use only screws without flatting out the ends, that's why people removing them.
