Gukesh D's Italian Game smashes Suleymanli

  • Featured is an excellent chess game between Gukesh D and Aydin Suleymanli from the 45th Chess Olympiad Budapest 2024. In an Italian Game, Suleymanli breaks the pin on his king knight with pawns and soon thereafter tries to maneuver it to f4. This idea leaves him tactically vulnerable to a beautiful combination by Gukesh who correctly assesses that his rook and two pawns will outweigh Suleymanli's two bishops. Watch how Gukesh D restricts his opponent's pieces move by move and to the point where Suleymanli resorts to aimless shuffling.

    I found Nxe5 :) Nice game and commentary. One thing I don't understand, on move 23, why didn't white push d5 for the fork straightaway?

    • @ashesds1
      @ashesds1 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ne5 hits white queen with tempo and black will save the bishop and also the Dark square bishop gets unleashed. d5 would be a very bad blunder

    • @catcanard8585
      @catcanard8585 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ashesds1 Ne5 would just get taken no? I think it's more so that the white knight is misplaced and can be taken back after the bishop is saved, unleashing the dark square bishop as you said

    • @TheLetterH111
      @TheLetterH111 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Bg8 then if dxc6, Bxc4 winning back the knight and now both bishops are very strong and black is winning

    why didn't white play 23. d5 ?

  • @nicksamek12
    @nicksamek12 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    What’s the issue with 23. D5?

    • @KF1
      @KF1 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I wondered that, too. Maybe because the bishop can back up, and if pawn captures knight, white's knight would also fall (undefended)

    • @mr.anti-hero4398
      @mr.anti-hero4398 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The issue is that in case of bishop captures horse, captured knight would need to be recaptured on a D file, instead on an F file, which means white wouldn't get an extra passed pawn to create disturbance, as the pawn on a D file would be blockated by a black's pawn structure. This would be a draw, or even a winning position for black, as white would have only two pieces, while black's queen would be able to block the entrance...and it'd only a matter of time until black finds a way to coordinate his pieces, which hints white might be in trouble.

    Gukesh's games are not as intriguing since more than half of his moves are always computer preparation.

      @@abebuckingham8198 If Ding is truly off it’s sad for him & chess fans the world over. That said, Bobby Fischer years ago switched up his openings for his WC match… throwing all of Spassky’s pre-match prep out the window. Such switch up is not a reflection of character but practicality.
