It's a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's our hero, Superman! The Death and Return of Superman is a beat'em up game released by Sunsoft and Blizzard Entertainment to Super Nintendo and Genesis and based on the Death of Superman storyline. All of the five Supermen are playable characters at some point. Death and Return of Superman is a comic book story arc that served as the catalyst for DC Comics crossover event of 1993. The premise is as simple as the title: Superman enters combat with a seemingly unbeatable monster called Doomsday in the streets of Metropolis. As outcome of the battle, both combatants die. During the time he was killed, four individuals claimed the mantle of Superman: Steel (The steel Superman called John Henry Irons, armed with a hammer), Erradicator (David Connor, the "The Last Son of Krypton", alive thanks have used their energy to form a body image of Kal-El), Superboy (Conner Kent, supposedly a clone of Superman, freed from the clutches of developers before reaching the mature age) and The Cyborg (Henry "Hank" Henshaw, a powerful cyborg, was proclaimed to be rebuilt as a Superman, but his true intentions were to end when in alliance with Mongul, he also destroyed a city of 7 million people). Superman is a hero that I like very much, too bad he did not have many good games. This is a game "playable" at least!

1:04:34 from the comics, the evil Superman tries to fry the real one by shooting a gigantic beam of Kryptonian energy at him, but the one in front converted it to beneficial energy to fully restore Superman. This scene REALLY abbreviated that.
Um dos melhores jogos do SNES e um dos melhores jogos que já joguei. História fantástica e trilha sonora muito boa.
The sound design in this game is just fantastic, especially for its time.
The music still gets stuck in my head
The soundtrack is awesome!!
Definitely
I love how random street punks with chainsaws can hurt Supes.
I get krpstonite
I feel they should have put two more levels:
Superman level where he's in the Kryptonian afterlife, fighting cloaked demons disguised themselves as Kryptonians. The boss is the demon disguised as the Cleric, and Superman saves Jonathan Kent who briefly died of a heart attack and tried to bring his son back to life.
Steel level where he fights the street thugs, and the boss is the female weapons dealer who was John Henry Irons' ex-partner and ex-lover.
Superboy is so 90's kid character it hurts. I can almost imagine him in a PSA where he tells kids that they can't be "rad to the max" like him if they use drugs. Seriously, I am amazed he doesn't have attacks involving skateboards or boom boxes.
It was the nineties when he was made, so he's period appropriate?
Or has a backwards hate Fresh Prince style HAHA
@Kev Walthall Well, the rendition of the character we are discussing. Silver Age Superboy was Young Superman, basically. 90's Superboy was... something else.
Conner became more humble after the nineties.
best game of superman ever
definitely 1000x better than superman 64 ugh
Cyborg Superman's and the Eradicator's designs are so damn awesome.
9:30 Chainsaws and molotovs, you know... Superman`s weaknesses...
Yup,this is my childhood right here :D thx for the upload!
Once again, the world is safe.
"Thanks to Superman."
It must have felt so weird to "fight with yourself", in that battle against the cyborg after you played as him.
Yes that was weird in the third level when you play as the Cyborg which was a little confusing because, the enemies you fight in the third level as the Cyborg were bad guys and the Cyborg is a bad guy so it was weird to fight bad guys as a bad guy which was the same enemies Superman, the Eradicator, Man Of Steel, and Superboy fight too.
I'm glad they stayed so close to the source material.
That's about all this game had going for it. The arcade Superman kicks the crap out of this one as far as the beat em up and flying shooter parts go.
They did left out Mongul and Green Lantern though, really weird considering they kept the destruction of Coast City.
Funny, I don't recall Superman having to fight his way through street punks to stop Doomsday.
William Crowe it’s a video game shut the fuck up
why do people have to take others comments so personal everyone is entitled to their own opinions
Looks like they're taking advantage of the chaos.
The anti superman boys
damn so many great memories around this time of gaming especially when i had Earthworm jim and Raw is War to go with it.
The movie "Batman v Superman" had some history of that comic.
too bad the movie sucked
@@EDifyer881 I understand that BvS mainly pulls loose inspiration from The Dark Knight Returns, but why would WB kill off Supes, only to bring him back 3 movies later? And this is literally the second movie in the DCEU.
@@busterthejedi8446 exactly
@@EDifyer881 better than black widow
@@THEREALGAMEMASTER-gz5xg it was bad huh
This is an awesome game. Trying to beat it right now. Is there infinite continues? I hope so lol! And whoever said it sucks u can only walk.. U can fly whenever u want and as long as u want and fight in the air. Another thing unique about this game is that there is shoot em up levels! This is the best and only good superman game..
One of my favorite games a kid. Rented it all the time. Stuck with the less good Genesis one atm, gotta get my snes one back.
I remember playing this as a kid and it being HARD. I also didn't have many comics, so had no idea the story. I got all the way to the last level, I think, but couldn't quite beat it before we had to take it back (was a rental). I liked the relatively simple combat, though I didn't realize all the different throws and stuff at the time.
My one main complaint was how ranged attacks are completely worthless, no matter how much you charge them or whatnot. Granted, Superman/men aren't known for being ranged combatants, but they did less than the punches. The jump attacks were always the strongest to me in the game since you could avoid attacks that way. Though I loved how the enemies could hit each other. I also remember destroying the teleport platforms was easier with Steel than with Supes himself. XD That hammer throw had some REACH on it!
This actualy looks like a pretty fun game for it's time !
It totally is. I played it a million times.
1:04:38 Eradicator: Kal-El, take my strength. You'll be rejuvenated, my friend.
if there is one positive thing to say about this game it is that this is a very faithful adaptation of the story
This is a tough game. But it's a pretty good game. What I find interesting is that so many haters say, "Superman is overpowered. He can just do anything. It's an easy win. The game would be over in 2 seconds." However, this game debunks those hater claims because Superman struggles to win in this entire game. The level of difficulty is high. If Superman was overpowered (as the haters claim), then playing as Superman should be an easy win. But in fact, there is no easy winning in this game.
Unsurprisingly, adding Superman's villains to the game means that Superman is threatened. Superman villains are more that able to challenge him
@@Condor2481 - Yes, exactly. Superman's villain's are an epic-level threat to Superman. Many of his villains could defeat him and even kill him.
0:16 The Greatest Hero of All Times, Superman Guards Metropolis and Thw World Against All Evil Forces (my favorite intro's song, makes me feel to fight)
Beware, Superman! For on these raging streets you will find yourself draggin at double speed, and this may be not just your last battle, but your final fight. So behave as befits a knight of the round as you face commandos, captains, crude bad dudes, aliens, predators, and search through dungeons for axes, altered beasts, dragons and...and...alright, we've worn it thin. Cut!
If game engines could sue for overwork, this one would have a payout for the ages.
Man this game and Maximum Carnage were my favorites back then
Both based on comic book storylines! Though Maximum Carnage isn't so good compared to Death of Superman.
I just got an SNES emulator, can’t wait to finish both!!
After a very long time of period, finally, there is a movie - Reign of the Supermen!
My Favorite Superman Video Game!!!!!!
16:24 Instead of Level complete I was so sure it was going to say “DOUBLE KO!!”
I also thought exactly the same when I saw that scene.
Excellent comment.
47:29 He's wearing a solar suit. He's the REAL thing.
Never even knew this existed until now...
Picking up the sman symbol sounds like a metal gear solid sound.
Nostalgic time in my life right here 90s where has time gone
Man, Molotov and Chainsaw's parents must have been psychics or something.
1:04:42 Kal-El: Thank you Eradicator, I won't forget this!!!!!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
40 : Chills that music, Superman The Greatest Hero of All Time
Excellent backbreaker, Eradicator.
This is a fun game to play but, hard to beat. (It's too bad this game is not listed in Game Genie where I would have beaten the game a million times if it was listed in Game Genie). When I first beat this game after defeating the Cyborg, I didn't know if the Cyborg was really dead or not but when I saw it saying "Level Complete" at 1:10:44, I felt more relaxed. I did also feel nervous thinking I would have to defeat Doomsday again after defeating the Cyborg but I was glad I didn't have too.
MAN EU AMAVA ESE JOGO
37:11 Eradicator: So it is YOU who destroyed the human population of Coast City.
This game, as far as beat em ups go, was not the best. Even I found it repetitive as a kid when I played it, but it is really good when compared to other Superman games though.
Guess you haven't heard of the superior Superman on the Nintendo 64
@@trappedintime8273 😂
@@trappedintime8273 yeah no one likes that game
2 things kinda ruin this game
1) Enemy hit boxes are too thin. You have to be in almost exact Y position as them to be able to hit them.
2) You can't hit two enemies at once like in Streets of Rage. Even when they are standing in the same spot, only one of them will register so the other guy can interrupt your ass.
It's still an enjoyable beat 'em up though. Nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
Epic back throw, Teen of Steel.
My favorite game! I still have mine!
the code is: OB, 29, 2C, 05. refill your health bar and increase your life span, also allows you to skip levels. Hold down A, B, X, Y to refill your health bar and to add extra lives. Hold down A, B, X, Y, and press SELECT at the same time to skip levels.
I personally think both superman batman and goku are awesome
That opening scared the wits out of me when I was younger.
And ha - Blizzard made this. WAY before they made their mountain of money.
Awesome SNES game!
Cadmas NEVER learns. If they keep Doomsday here and do illegal experiments and reawakened, the killing cycle will happen again.
You can run Cyborg Superman but you can't hide from Batman Adam and Jo-El.
Nice longplay. I love the games soundtrack.
Ha, the only superman game that was ok decent, even tho its a beat em up type of game.
Am I not the only one who noticed Aero the Acro-Bat at 0:06?
It is, man. Sunsoft is the creation of Aero the AcroBat.
Not only that, but ole Supes soundly kicked his ass six ways from Sunday. But, one single uppercut that any Mortal Kombat character would shrug off in two seconds? NOPE, can't take that! XD
The only thing I never really got as a kid and I still don't get is:
1. Why in level 2 are those punkers trying to kill Superman when Doomsday is present? If they are successful in stopping Superman, then they die. But if Superman can stop Doomsday, then they can continue living.
2. Who operating that crane and how did they learn how to operate it with such efficiency?
3. Why did Superman land prematurely to fight these low lifes? Wouldn't it have been a better idea to engage Doomsday directly instead of having to walk a mile to get to him?
How about how the fuck random street punks are able to hurt him with molotovs and chainsaws in the first place?
1: They likely got duped by Doomsday, saying if they kill Supes they'd be "spared".
2: Bob
3: Cause then the game would be too short/easy...but i doubt we'd care back then cause "YEAH! WE'RE SUPERMAN!"
1: Because then there wouldn't be a stage 2. Remember, this was before video games were trying to be movies. They didn't let the story determine what they can or can't do with the gameplay
2: One of the punks of course. And what efficiency? He just knows how to make it go up and down and that's it. He also hits his own buddies more than Superman
3: See 1
I liked the game when I played it as a kid.
great long play i never played this one. looks awesome.
After watching James and Mike play this, you made the game look like a cakewalk!
He had 4 extra lives when doomsday killed him! Hax! Lol good video
this is the best super man game ever made....
Game looks kinda fun. Another great longplay:)
I can get that Superboy gets cocky and Cyborg-Superman knocks him out as a result... but it seems odd that the Eradicator, who is supposed to be more ruthless, also makes the same mistake. The game almost makes it like Henshaw could only progress with his plan out of sheer stupidity from the good guys (not that it would be an uncommon ocurrence...)
I just think that it's a scripted "loss", I don't think Cyborg Superman aka Henshaw, would actually lose to them.
@@jinthekingkazama1159 I know it's scripted, it's just that the way it's scripted is odd. Superboy getting cocky and Henshaw knocking him out is understandable. The Eradicator also flaunting with the victory animation and getting knocked out the same way? Not really.
@@llSuperSnivyll
Yeah, I feel like a better way, would be to make a similar thing, to what happened with Superman and Doomsday, except that Cyborg dodges Eradicator's attack, and knocks him out.
the music is so unfitting, but the sound effects are awesome.
Eradicator is going full on David Bowie in that costume. . .
The lights went out on the Twin Towers analogue first at 1:37 , what isnt' Blizzard telling us?!
Any chance of doing a longplay of Superman The Man of Steel for the original Xbox?
I love this game!
Usually not too fond of supermam games, but this one was the first and probably the best one I ever played.
Soundtracks awesome!
Superman theme always gave me some Nick Arcade vibes, if anyone remembers that show. Lol
It's Doomsday's the one who's causing trouble.
The Juggernaut (X-Men: Children of the atom) can obliterate him.
Rambeau = Rambo.
I enjoyed this one.
Looks way better than maximum carnage
Cool music but wish there were more tracks. Game has a very dark tone, I wonder if some parents or kids were surprised by that.
This was my favorite comic as a kid, and if I had played it back then, it would have blown my freaking balls off. But jeez, what a repetitive senseless mess lol
Whats the point of the heat vision attack? It deals no damage and the stun is nule
stun, then attack with normal punch or grab
I love this game
Classic game
Yes, this game is extremely repetitive at worst. But hey! It’s a beat-em-up, and not every game can be Final Fight, right?
A heavily truncated version of the event comics. Not a bad game either. Had some decent music.
I didn't understand why they made the ranged attack so weak.
most enemies don't even take damage from it.
and the enemies that do take damage from it, only take 1 pixel worth.
the attack is completely worthless.
were they afraid that people would abuse the attack if it was stronger?
then i noticed this game was made by Blizzard, the kings of the nerf.
The developer that brought nerfing into the mainstream.
and now it makes sense.
hands down better music than the Genesis music but the sound effects definitely not
It’s like they took Maximum Carnage and changed the character skins.
hate to say it, but the actual series of comics based on this special was much better
that would be so cool, I want to be agent orange.
I like the game play n the music better from the sega the segas music n game play in my opinion seem more intense n made it seem like more of a better cinematic view
16:21 One of the most anticlimatic moments in video games...
...And because hugging with clothes on is overrated?
Nero Angelo l
The game is just great except one thing. This version looks very weird. Superman on Sega has much more gloomy atmosphere (the music etc). And what we have here? The music is too cheery. It seems that superman did not come to fight with doomsday and sacrifice himself. He met this scary gray thug when he was going to the party. Not as good as on sega i think.
Think whatever you want man, is your opinion, I really disagree! I think this soundtrack is amazing, the best part of the game by far. This version is much more memorable, it has much better composition, and it does a pretty good job in its tone too, there's a certain dread in these siren like sounds, it really feels apocalyptic, but it also feels industrial and really fucking badass. But you know, whatever floats your boat pal
Finish this just about now lol
18:02 None.
Oh and spoilers...
superman ftw
1:10:38 There can be only one.
Un beat them all relativement classique
21:48
Try Armored Warriors.
The ONLY good Superman game that was made.
This is a rip-off of "Legend" also by Sunsoft. Or the other way around. Same Gamaplay and Special Attack (jump+dive with feet). [Both are much boring in terms of the gameplay, but Legend has some good atmosphere here and there.]
Like comice eradicators sacrifice
Great Game.
biba koku.
16:25 GAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😫😫😫😵
