I want to say they labeled it a 3412 instead of 3406. Every Tech should put together a simple pressure test kit for fuel, oil, trans pressure readings is vital for any troubleshooting, diagnosis.
Wrong engine label. That’s funny. Nice job again. Thank you for being “the TH-cam’s” CAT authority. I’ve learned a lot from watching you. Also you have commented before about having a larger family… that means you wear a lot of hats no doubt. Sounded like your young ones were in the background while you recorded the voiceover. Didn’t phase you a bit. Good job dad!
On my 3126B I've found a lot of components I've replaced have had updated part numbers and are vastly different from the old parts I took off. In every case when I've done that, it's fixed the problem and I can see where the changes they made were improvements. The oil pump and oil filter housing are two examples. It's part of why I don't mind spending the money at the Cat dealer to get the latest and greatest. And that "3412" is missing 6 cylinders :)
Had 10 trucks used for heavy haul with C12s. They all needed cylinder packs around 350,000 miles. Cat changed something in the computer and some went to a million miles after that. The biggest issue we had was leaking front structures. The steel plate to block behind the front motor mount would leak. Those were traded in for C15 powered tractors.
The c12 had a thunderously loud jake, compared to the c15. The turbo seemed louder. These had really good power. Cons: they burned oil; got mediocre fuel economy, and had longevity issues. I remember there was an issue with Rod issues blowing holes in the blocks.
Thanks for sharing this one with us, really cool looking truck! Don’t tell me, TH-cam made you take the music off of destruction of the week… what a mess this week was..
That is a really nice HDT RV hauler. Hope he does not have more issues. I think they stickered it wrong shouldn't be a 3412. Stay safe and healthy Sir.
Seen the relief valve stick in the FTP, I always check it. When Cat came out with the new design FTP, did not have the updated line. Had to fabricate a fitting to make it work. Coolant in the oil on these. Replace water pump first, if that don't fix it, replace head gasket. Two styles of head gasket depends on head and block design. I would call Cat and tell them you only got half of your replacement engine.
Thank You Josh. Very well edited and the whole presentation was very easy to understand and follow. the kinds of incidental items you throw in to add value to the subject and keep it very interesting. I don't do diesels anymore, so it's always fun for me to watch your diagnostic logic and the little tricks of the trade, like the RTV silly cone gel getting hard while eating burgers and pizza. Those air bag jacks look so simple, but I wonder about their reliability. A truck airbag is one thing, but a cheap Chinese knockoff airbag attached to a cheap Chinese metal contraption is a horse of a different color. Keep safety in mind when using new tools and equipment. I look forward to your video every week or when you get one out. Keep up the great work, and keep safety in mind. ben/ michigan retired but not gone

Put a few drops of engine oil on the exhaust manifold for a quick check of coolant in the oil. If it bubbles- coolant. If it lies there and smokes, all good.
I'm certainly not going to say you're wrong for this application, but some uses of RTV (which vulcanizes at room temperature) specify a cure time before you tighten to final torque. If you over-tighten before it's cured (or partially cured), you effectively just squeeze it out of the joint. So you *may* get less leaks if you install and tighten to 1/2 way, and then come back after lunch and torque to spec. Again, I've seen that on RTV and other sealants like Honda-Bond... but not claiming to be an expert.
I like to check them first also There can be a reason that they are out of adjustment If you just loosen them all off you will miss that. Love the videos keep up the good work
Awesome tech video Josh this one was challenging with many opportunities for faults. I am certain the builder of this truck loves his one of a kind RV hauler. I swear when my F450 dies I’m going to build one similar to his build and not have these crazy new pickup truck prices invested in a 5th wheel puller.
Nice! Excellent video. I gotta say, that sure doesn’t look like no 3412! That reminds me of a time quite a few years back, I got a set of new head bolts for a 3400 Natural gas engine and they came brand new in a sealed container from Cat with no threads cut on them! Lol. The rest of them were 100% good, just missed a step in production I guess.
if you suspected a coolant leak you should have done the head bolt check for a leaking head gasket, the key way appeared to be sheared on the fuel pump drive gear, any time you have the valve cover off on a c12 you should inspect the cam followers, especially number two cylinder.
Take the gears off the shafts in the transfer pump, keys or gear should be worn if they have that much movement. Look in side of the gears slot probably enlarged.
The oil level issue could be if the engine was cold and the level was checked too soon after it had been running. It sometimes takes an eternity for cold oil to come back to the oil tray in some engines.
I have got a Toyota Landcruiser with a 1HDFTE motor and if you check the oil after it has been going it will be off the stick. Check it when it is cold ( over night ) and it will be on the full mark. Can catch you out when doing oil changes too but I know exactly how much to put in it and check it tomorrow to make sure it is right. Jeff
Is the issue for the new engine in Smokey Red the 3412 label on valve cover when it's not a V12? I don't remember offhand but I think it's some flavor of 3406
I just got a Vevor 2kw variac for variable AC voltage and I'm waiting on a Vevor AC vacuum pump.. Seem like decent stuff for a decent price to me so far
Some of the coolant canisters do have fine screens in them to catch casting sand and other debris in addition to the extender pellets. Some does not mean all obviously.
A trip to Midland Michigan (Dow Chemical country) will teach you all about room temp vulcanization. At one point they had a huge display at the airport.
I have question, sorry not quite about the video. I have started watching your videos and i love them! I just started a diesel mechanic job about 4 months working on school busses with no knowledge about mechanics really in general and they know this. I typically won't get any engine experience unless something were to go wrong and then i get to learn. I was wondering if there is anything without going to school atm to kinda fast track some engine experience without spending loads of money?
Oh C10s and C12s I hate them so much. I had 2 trucks with them and the oil leaks out of the front structure and it cracking near the compressor and the cam followers killing the cam. I'm glad i got rid of them
When you were manually turning the pump gears showing the slop, the bottom gear is moving on the shaft, shaft not turning, looks like it's keyed. Bet that key is nearly sheared for some reason.
Green antifreeze? Maybe perforation of liners or erosion of o-rings on liners. I have never seen correct green coolant for diesel engines. I could be wrong but my coolant was always red. Isn't a 3412 a marine engine of fairly high horsepower.
They put 3412 valve cover on a 3406 that is embarrassing, come on factory workers take some pride in the greatest cat engine ever made. I love a 3412 just as much but those mistakes make me question quality control.
All your triaxle dump trucks near you have 20 thousand pound steer axles. And yes that’s what they weigh on that axle when you lift the axle to make turns. But that’s fully loaded. Empty ways around 5 ton. So I’m not so sure why the guy in the video thinks that unloaded truck steer axle weighs that much. Must be covering for the vevor company. Those air jacks can’t even lift 5 ton but he covered for them and claimed that steer axle weighs a lot more. Bs. Garbage jack
Horn doesn't work... sticks head out window and yells "Honk!"😂
When the horn doesn't work you gotta yell "CLEAR PROP"
I just yell "FINGERS!".
I just yell “beep!”
Port or starboard on a Kenworth?
I was just about to say the same thing. Looks like the inside of Aussie 🇦🇺 Kenworths. Go figure.

That's an interesting 3412 there at the end. Never seen a six cylinder V12 before.
Another great video Anept Ape.
Thank you.
44 degrees on the first day of summer sounds heavenly. I'm over summer already.
110 degrees with the heat index today, quite over it.
90%+, 90°F+, Field Technician.... yeah, it's a bit much
Nice job running that down. Don't like to break out the parts cannon but I would have went for the pump right up front.

never saw much advantage of a c12 over a c15
overhaul prices sometimes higher....in most applications fuel mileage not much better

Different applications, yes when using etc as the gasket your correct, he’s using it more as a glue between pieces of gasket.
That beeping was driving me insane.
I wonder if a second oil sample is in order, what are the possibilities that the pump was losing fuel into the crankcase?
that's a good call i'd say

I see what's wrong with that engine for smoky red. They misspelled Cummins.

Those Jack's are pretty handy, I got one awhile back when u first got it, workd well for lifting axles on low boy to do brakes
When you checked the two drips of oil from the drain plug it did look thin
CAT forgot to send you the other half of that 3412.
With the fuel pump, i had one on a Detroit 60 series that had close to 1/4 turn of slop in it. 😅 replaced it and truck fired right up perfectly

A shortcut for paint overspray masking: use aluminum foil to wrap hoses, belts, etc…
Easy on and easy off.
That 3412 valve cover sure looks a good on a 6 cylinder engine!!..😂
vevor after seeing your video. Holy sh*t can he do that, is that allow in the contract. intense page flipping noises.
Hope he didn't have to pay the 3412 price for that 6 cylinder.
HUMMM🤔 build your own jack with TWO air bags ! Great fuel issue video. I learn something every time I watch . Thanks
While the customer likes suppressors, he does not like to suppress his truck. Jokes aside, quality content AA

3406 marked as a 3412 . I am having the same fuel problems with m C-12. Thanks for the education on where the fuel regulator is located.

Nope, that’s a 3412 they are putting in the truck

It was 41 degrees low here on the first day of summer, now it is a high of 100.

I'd like to see a real 3412 stuffed into a truck!
They were a thing for a while. One of the heavy-haul trucks when I worked at Wagner had an old 3412B. They claimed it was original.
3412 sticker, hahaha. Well, at least there's half of a 3412 sitting there.
It has a v12 tappet cover( D9l D10N R and I assume T motor) on a c15
That coolant sure was sparkling. Stop leak makes me worry alot.
Green antifreeze? Maybe perforation of liners or erosion of o-rings on liners. I have never seen correct green coolant for diesel engines. I could be wrong but my coolant was always red.
Isn't a 3412 a marine engine of fairly high horsepower.
Some of our compact equipment with 3 bangers or little 2.4lit, 4 cylinders will take the green stuff. Light plants, gensets etc...
Red is long life, Green is the old style your have to add SCA on prefill, Cat sells Purple also, already has SCA, just add water.
John Deere coolant is green.
My 3406E has had green coolant its while life. 1.8 million miles 29 years just had 2nd in-frame
The C-12 seems so simple compared to modern engines!
Smokey Red's new engine is not a 3412. If it was, it would be a tighter fit in the frame.

I see what's wrong with the engine for Smokey Red. The breather tube is on the wrong valve cover. It should be on the back valve cover.

3412? Well they're half right
3412 under the hood of a peterbilt! That would be a sight. Probably overweight on the front axle empty. 👍
You once said recently that you can't use rubber gloves anymore, why is that?

Uh yeah, missing 6 cylinders for that badge!
3412 where are other six ??
3412 valve covers?
