Sponges: Oldest Creatures in the Sea? - Full Episode

  • Until recently there was a scientific consensus that sponges were the first animals to branch off the "Animal Tree of Life," a kind of family tree for all living and extinct animals on earth. But recent DNA research has cast doubt on that theory, with some scientists suggesting that ctenophores, also known as comb jellies, are an older lineage.

Whats his shop called? I was just in tarpon yesterday. There is quite a process to clean them properly. My old neighbor used to just leave them outside. They would stink up the whole neighborhood as they died and dried out.

This is why the Georgia aquarium needs some more sea animals here is some examples: *sea sponge:* there tanks would be helpful to clean some of the fish tanks in the aquarium and that place were we could touch the star fish. *humpback whales/blue whales:* they may have whale sharks but we could get something new they could make them in that open ocean tank I would love to see some! *Barracuda:* these fish should have there own tank to because they may eat the angel fish and they would be good to see there. That’s all folks!

Hi, I️ am a student at NSU University School, and I’m taking a marine science class right now! I️ really liked the video! And I️ had some questions about the sponges after the video. Why were they left without nervous system, and can they still evolve? It would be nice if you sometime have a free time to come to our school, and give us a lecture about sponges.

This is one of the arguments against Ctenophora as sister group to all other animals. Sponges display genetic and morphological characteristics that are also absent in all other animals, such as lack of gastrulation, tissues, germ layers, and symmetry. According to the latest widely-cited article, sponges are the oldest animal lineage and sister group to all other animals (Pisani, 2017).

That is what the Ctenophora sister hypothesis states. However, if a sponge had these features, we would probably call it by another name. Also a new paper has just been published which offers new evidence refuting the Ctenophora-sister hypotheses and claims that Porifera are the most ancient animal. So...sponges are basically 'saltwater mushrooms'...therefore, they are the ocean-equivalent of fungi...(both plant and animal). Maybe, the problem isn't finding 'what happened to the nervous system', and more the researcher that can't look at 'commonalities with land-based life' that are known to be similar?

Interesting.. call me ignorant, seriously I thought sponge were purely man made. so that’s explained why our old sponge has such huge pore, dark in color and shaped weirdly because it’s natural, instead of artificial ones as in car wash or boxy dish sponges
I would like to add that Those local “sponger” had such unique speech rate, i haven’t heard these kind of accents before . Part of word sounded like from Southern African.
