    I am so happy to see you put a pad under your knees when hand-torquing those studs. Believe me, in 20-30 years, your knees will thank you! I'm closing in on 50 and WISH I would have done that in my younger years.

    I love when mechanics use Torque sticks to properly tighten the lug nuts on my car. The only problem is that most mechanics don't do what you do Faye. They keep the air gun on for too long and it ends up tightening them too much. I like how you do it. You just click your gun till you hear the lug nuts bottom out. You don't keep going over and over again. Great video.

    As someone who has worked in tires for over a decade, you used a torque stick exactly like I was trained. I know there are a lot of guys who don't like them, but if used like you did here, it adds an additional layer of protection for the customer. It's a hell of a lot easier than feathering them on by throttling the trigger.

      @Truth Defender Yes. It's essentially a guarantee (if done correctly) that you won't over tighten the lugs. Some people refer to it as a "pre-torque" I don't know about you, but I feel better knowing the customers wheel is secured correctly. Ever seen a tire fall off while the car is driving? Scary stuff! Not to mention that they come back pissed!

    • @TheTehman
      @TheTehman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Truth Defender it can be caused by a number of things, including improper torque. Excessive corrosion on the wheel/hub matting surface, lugnut fatigue from over torquing. Application of antiseize or other thread lubricant. Improper lug seat type. Improper thread engagement. I’m sure there’s more.

    Great video Faye! I am not a professional mechanic, but work on my own vehicles. While I don't own any torque sticks, I sort of tighten lugs as you instructed by using my little battery powered ratchet. It only tightens to 35 ft-lbs, but I've never seen a wheel lug less than that. So I run up the lugs with the power ratchet, lower the car, then finish with a torque wrench. Cheers from Florida!

    This seem like a good system :)
    In my testing--which only involves one impact gun used with the same 150 lb*ft torque stick, on the same lug nuts of the single truck I own...I have concluded that a full two seconds of hammering gets me closer.
    I admit that your way is certainly less likely to overdue it, but for now I'm sticking with 2 seconds.
    BTW, if you go to the torque test channel you'll see that impact wrenches (without a torque limiting stick) don't tighten bolts to their max for about 15 seconds...everything less than 15 seconds is less than the maximum torque.

    • @RollsCnardly
      @RollsCnardly 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Give me a link to this Video on the torque test channel that says 15 (fifteen seconds). You must mean 1.5 seconds. 15 seconds is an awful lot of uga dugas ! ALL the lug tuds would be waaay stretched out by then, I guarantee it - unless you are using an junk impact or one with a Dead Battery . . .

    Still do the last bit by hand though, that's key.

    I've never used impact tools to install lug nuts. I use them to remove the lugs, but I always hand-start lug nuts and then run them snug with a standard 3/4" ratchet extension with a socket on it. I don't use the wrench itself ... just use the extension like a screwdriver. Gets them on and snug quickly enough for me. After I lower it to the ground, I torque them all with my trusty torque wrench. But then again, I don't really use power tools for installing fasteners much at all anyway.

    You can send it all the way with the torque stick and it will never over torque a lug nut. The extended body of the stick is precisely made to lose torsional load at the rated torque. The more torque you apply the more twist the stick will have, preventing over tightening. And yes, it is imperative to use a torque meter to complete the job. Torque sticks are just a tool to speed up labor.

    Torquing wheels properly is very overlooked. Either the rotors pulsate if too tight, or the wheel comes off. Most people throw away the instructions that come with it; saying that you need to calibrate the gun to the torque stick based on gun setting, gun strength, air line diameter, air pressure, and yes, even the cleanliness of the lugs( rust buildup). You did it right by verifying the torque value with a torque wrench. But don't forget to clean the mating surface of the hub and wheel. If not, then when you hit a bump, the wheel re-centers itself, and the lugs loosen up causing need for a second torque. But I will say, you have more common sense than half people I have worked with.

    Torque sticks work, but they do vary between different guns. A faster spinning, lower peak gun will result in a higher final torque than a slower spinning higher rated gun, since they rely on the tension of the stick itself.
    Personally, my complaint with them has nothing to do with the tool, or the effectiveness of it, but the process of using them. It's not a big issue with conical/acorn lugs, but on a bored lug setup (I'm a Rover tech for reference) running the wheel onto the hub without seating it flush first, can cause the wheel to not fully seat even when the lugs at spec.
    I snug lugs up with my electric impact, then hand torque. First lug not even snug, just to locate, and snug the rest from there. It's one of those, 'if you're paying attention, it'll never be an issue' deals, and as we know, every tech ever always pays absolute attention to everything they touch, never having a 20 minute debate about where to go for lunch, that never happens.

    I watched a technician at Porsche Grand Rapids, in Grand Rapids, Michigan hammer the hell out of his torque sticks on a car. He held the trigger down for, like 5 seconds at full pop on each lug nut. Ridiculous. We left commenting how we would never bring our car there again based on the fact that, if he didn’t even know how to use torque sticks properly, how am I supposed to trust him with my car?

    what i do, is put the impact at the lowest setting, tighten the lugs. after when lowering the vehicle, i lower it just enough where the vehicles tires touches the ground, with the load still on the lift. then i torque the lugs. then after that, lower the vehicle completely. never had a issue. in the 10 yrs ive been doing the profession

    What are your thoughts on using a cordless impact instead of air on torque-stick accuracy? I've used air before just found that cordless tools are really getting to be more efficient in a flat rate position.

    • @Wowzersdude-k5c
      @Wowzersdude-k5c ปีที่แล้ว

      There's youtube videos about this. The air guns are more accurate with the sticks because they generally have lower impacts per minute (IPM). Those electric guns from Milwaukee (etc) have too many IPM and affect the accuracy of the sticks. Of course, it's possible there are newer sticks out there designed for these higher IPM electric guns.

    Hi Faye, this is a very informative video if like me, someone is interested in how to determine what stick they need. All of my family vehicles have lug nuts that call for 95 to110 ft. Lbs. of torque. I bought a 75ft lb stick, and it works perfectly. No more loosening the nuts to retorque them after using my impact gun for the install. Thanks so much.

    My dad and I have been open for like 14yrs now, we dont and havnt bothered with measuring lug torque in anyway. We deal with alot of year ranges in the salty NE and the local buddies that we run into here and there have histories of wheels falling off while practicing lug torquing.
    I have a keen feel for my gun on full power and am able to "see" when a wheel is not seated properly due to hub corrosion, and thus we have never had any issues with customers losing lug torque.
    We did try the sticks very briefly many years ago, but we quickly realized that the specific "feel" is lost and that hub to wheel corrosion issue can more easily go unnoticed with sticks and wrenches, whereas a powerful SHOT from the raw gun exposes a corroded fitment more clearly.
    PS your the only other tech ive seen that uses the gardening knee board lol

    Great job on your torque stick video. I especially liked your choice of music for it!😉
    "Must-Do Video #1": Lug nut torque check.
    Customer returns for recommended lug nut re-torqueing. What is the correct procedure? If you put your torque wrench on a nut and turn, unless that nut has loosened fairly significantly, you'll just get a click with no motion by the nut. And if you do get just a click, how do you know that the nut hasn't been run in 2 or 3 times the correct value? The wrench will always click at the value you've dialed in.
    Don't know if it's right or not, but I always post-check torque by using a breaker bar to just crack the nut back with absolute minimum of nut movement, then run it home again with the torque wrench.
    This needs a video!

    Torque sticks work great. And we’re all one piece the socket was part of the stick. Probably have them for about 25 years now. I used to check with a torque wrench they were always right on the money. Always tighten up in a star pattern the first two put on fairly tight then the other three tighten right up go back and tighten up the first two done for a 5 bolt pattern. Two or three hits per nut. Never had a wheel fall off and I never had a brake rotor warp. I do all the family cars and trucks never had a problem yet. My torque sticks are from Sweden. I’m a firm believer in tightening everything up to specs. I used to always say if you’re not gonna use a torque wrench you’re no better than the guy in the backyard fixing his own car

    Very good video of the way you verify your torque to prevent warped rotors as well as undue stress on fasteners..
    I have one impact that i use for torque sticks regulated at 85psi as most compressors are set to trip in at 90 but not all places regulate the top at 120. Most like the 150-165 range for the extra buff for disassembling high corrosive fasteners. After regulated at 85, I then use the internal valve on gun to test and set final torque from the sticks. Has worked very well for me. Has always fell within allowed torque specs. Once set you can
    Slap it til socket readings stop advancing an ya got it.
    Torque sticks were designed for the speed an adjility of fastpaced flatrate L.O.F.TR bays.
    Ford gave all certified mechanics, as we were known back when/then. Rotunda made Ford. Still have mine. (Set an extra impact and regulator up and verify the efficiency of it. Can use a cheap rattlewrench, as all 1/2" guns can achieve 200lbs that i know of an if they can't, always good doorstop.) Never broke one but some have and complain. How can you complain about a broken torsion bar if ya overload it.
    We had to buy our own 140 an 160 lb bars and they were fixed head not removable and they are color coded for different makes and models with a wallchart color coded as well.

      Any time I go to a tire shop, I immediately take all 4 wheels off, apply a dab of copper anti-seize to the studs, and torque them properly as soon as I get home, because NO ONE ever does this. I've had to break studs, had rotors warp, even aluminum wheels cracked by dumbasses in tire shops. I've finally found a pretty good shop to use, but even they usually overtorque a bit and don't use anti-seize.
