  • In today's video I would like to share some tips and tricks on how to make sure the tails (both faux fur and real fur) you want to buy online is not from a cruel furfarm, by teaching you how to spot a tail from a cruel fur farm and giving tips on where to find tails from ethical fur farms!
    Thanks for watching!
How do I know that a tail is from a cruel animal farm?
Almost all cruel animal farms stem from Asian countries, this is because the laws on animal farms and animal rights is not operated in an animal-friendly way.
    - This means that sites that are based on Asian trades usually only sell tails from Asian cruel fur farms, such as, but not limited to: Wish, Aliexpress, EBay, Temu, Shien & Amazon. Any shop that shows that it is from an Asian country is probably a cruel fur farm.
    - Tails from cruel animal farms are often recognized by the use of Stock photos (White backgrounds, only 1 photo available)
    - The tail is often chained to an often used "lobster clamp" (usually Golden). That has a bulky, edged shape, with no thumb hook.
    Image for reference: tinyurl.com/ythwezhe
    - The tails are often smaller, and simply don't look healthy. Their leather, on the inside, is usually poorly scraped too.
    Image for reference: tinyurl.com/3hrfn5wy
    - The whites of the tail is often painted over to prevent it from turning blonde due it bleaching in the sun. But the paint often looks a little blue or even purple-ish.
    Image for reference: tinyurl.com/t8few54w
    - Tails from cruel animal farms are generally a lot cheaper than from healthy farms. A tail under 20 dollars is usually quite cheap, and around 10 is a no go.
Where can I find real fox/animal tails that are NOT from cruel animal farms?
    - Etsy. I always recommend this site as it has a lot of Taxidermy enthusiasts. Please still always check the origin of the shop, as Asian companies are also on this site. Etsy is also good for other types of gear!
    Link: tinyurl.com/4749d44f
    - Wyldertaxidermy - A fellow therian who sells tails through Etsy and Instagram
    Link Etsy: tinyurl.com/9khtpe68
    Link Instagram: tinyurl.com/fcsfkb8f
ValkyrjaAllure - This shops sells very high quality ethical fur tails on Etsy
    Link Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/ValkyrjaAll...
TurkishLeatherFur - A Turkish leather shop that sells all kinds of furs, including fox tails on Etsy|
    Link Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/TurkishLeat...
    - Local farms in your neighborhood are often the cheapest way to get tails
    - Local markets and thrift shops often have hand-me-down taxidermy and is usually not from Asian fur farms. It is however good to note that these tails might be from foxes that have been hunted and not farmed.

Thanks for the tips! Also if anyone has accidentally bought a tail from an abusive farm, I know it is cruel but it’s not your fault if they lied to you. But please don’t throw it in the trash if you bought an abused one try to make the most of it so the animals life wasn’t completely wasted.. To be clear I DONT support animal abuse but please look for red flags in a animal item you are buying, even non animal items can be from bad workplaces. Just stay safe :] Also thank you Thorn (Sorry if I got it wrong) for helping us! :)

Just a few notes on this:
    1. The clamp isn't a super good indicator of whether or not a tail is from a cruel fur farm or not, because anyone can buy and use those clamps! There are folks who source tails specifically from ethical fur farms and will use a very similar (of not the same) type of clamp. So I wouldn't recommend telling folks to use a clamp as a determining factor, because its possible that people may end up passing up tails from super good suppliers and may end up purchasing a tail sourced from a farm that is not ethical.
    2. A note on your personal tails! I wouldn't immediately write off your white tail as being from a cruel farm. The bigger, bushier tail comes from a silver morph red fox. Red foxes, especially those bred for fur (also known as ranch foxes) are known for their massive, thick, fluffy tails. The white tail, however, comes from what is called a blue fox, which is a 'ranch' form of the arctic fox, which have much smaller and often thinner tails than ranch red foxes. For a standard blue fox, I'd say your tail actually appears to be in great shape just from a visual perspective. I've had a blue fox tail from an unethical supplier, and could easily tell - blue fox fur should feel super plush and soft, and this tail's fur felt wirey and rough; the tail also shed constantly, which definitely shouldn't happen from a good fox tail; instead of being dense, this tail's fur was thinned out (probably due in part to all the shedding). When comparing ethically sourced tails to non-ethically sourced, it would be best if possible to compare two tails from the same species.
    3. It's super important to note that when it comes to tails from wild foxes, all of the things one might do to determine if a tail came from an ethical place or not should be thrown out the metaphorical window. Wild fox tails tend to be very small, thin, and rough both in appearance and texture. If a tail appears very small, thin, and rough in a way that other tails don't and is the standard red fox color, it's more likely that it came from a wild fox, not a fur farm. It would be impossible to know without asking or without the seller explicitly stating if that fox died of natural causes, was trapped (either ethically or unethically), was hunted in some other way, was killed for harassing or killing livestock, or was roadkill. The only other color morphs that could possibly come from wild red foxes are cross (a mixture of red and black) and silver (black with varying levels of white). Any other color variation of red fox tail comes from a fur farm.
    4. Even things like matted sections of fur or chewed spots aren't totally reliable as ways to tell if a fox came from an ethical place or not. Foxes are still not domesticated, so many even if captive bred will have an inate fear of humans. No matter how excellent their standards of care, some foxes will be extremely stressed no matter what just because theyre around humans so much - which may cause them to chew or lick at their fur (which causes mats and chew spots). The only way I'd say this is a totally viable way to determine if a fur farm is ethical or not is to have some way of knowing how many tails or pelts coming from that place have mats and chew marks. If it's more than 5% of the tails and pelts they sell, then I'd say that's where it can become more of a red flag.
Also, if you ever want to make a follow-up on this video, it would be a really good idea to make sure people are also aware of what things are sourced from farms and what are not, and how the things that are not from farms are sourced. I'd be happy to create and share a comprehensive list detailing that information!

Urf, I hate to admit it, but I got one of these cruel fur farm tails (specifically the one at 5:46) because I thought it'd be faux fur. Now I'm not the best fur expert, but for the longest time I thought it was faux fur, mainly cuz I couldn't see the leather bit inside. It's a very thin strip, about 5 mm, and it feels as if it's been hot glued shut, even though the tail is still flexible. Also there's no under coat, making it pass as a decent faux fur tail, but nowhere near the quality of my ethical tail. Even when wagging it, I notice the ethical tail is so much nicer and has a better "wag", probably due to it's weight and length.
As sad it might be, I think it's still good to take these cruel fur farm tails with you on adventures if you purchased one by accident. Pay respect to the creature and keep an eye out for any red flags in the future. Maybe the fox whose tail was stolen can get some closure seeing that at least someone else is taking good care of it

    • @TherianTerritory
      @TherianTerritory  ปีที่แล้ว +15

Some shops indeed glue the leather strap shut! Tmk this isn't necessarily good or bad.
I also agree that accidental purchases should still be treated like normal tails, and not be thrown away, if anything to at least pay respect to the abused fox.

I mean- There is such thing as an ethical fur farm where the foxes live a happy life after being saved from something or being bred there ( If they are bred there they don't know how to find food) then they either die of natural causes or put down so that they don't live painfully / die painfully or they are put down because of issues in old age such as arthritis, or put down due to and uncurable disease / broken bone that cant heal that has limited them in such a way.

hey, if its useful for anybody, the best tip to spot faux vs real fur (in cases where it's hard, like brightly colored real fur) is to look underneath the fur! if its mesh-y and woven (like fabric) then it's faux fur but if it isnt and it looks like skin/leather then it's real fur. there are other ways to tell like seeing the shape of individual hairs or burning it a little bit but that is the most reliable way!

    • @illusionistcat

also, if the fur is more rough, and takes shape easily (I mean like, if you brush it around in a circle the fur will be in a circle shape until it's brushed back) then it's faux fur!

I thought I'd give a bit of a sidenotes for you all after some observation from the comments:
    - Temu and Shien are newer Asian webshops that are also NOT safe.
    - If you're not sure whether a tail is from an ethical fur farm or not, don't hesitate to simply contact the seller.
    - All indicators from the sizes (5:53) and forward are not straight up giving away that the tail is from a cruel fur farm. So if your tail is short or slim, low quality, or bleached, it doesn't immediately mean that it's a bad tail. Tails sold at local shops are also often cheaper. But I did mention them as they may help indicate that your tail is from a cruel fur farm if you already possess one for example. It's mainly the first indicators that you really have to be careful with. This also means that if your tail does not have any of the last mentioned indicators while it is bought from a shop in China, this does NOT mean your tail is necessarily ethical.
    - The lobster clamp I referred to is not just about the clamp itself, but also about the stump that the tail has been glued to. While tails are not only glued by cruel fur farms/shops, I often see tails from cruel fur farms being glued to the stump on the bottom of the chain, so this is also an indicator.
    - It was pointed out to me that most of the Asian cruel fur farms are from China. However, I have seen examples of shady shops from the rest of Asia as well, so I personally still recommend staying away from all Asian sites and shops.
    - I have noticed that a lot of you do not know how to tell a faux fur tail from a real fur tail, so here is a video on how to tell the two apart: th-cam.com/video/csHQNm6iSyo/w-d-xo.html
This is important because some real fur tails are sold as faux fur tails!
    - If you or a family members has purchased a cruel fur farm tail but it hasn't been shipped yet, don't forget that you can still CANCEL your order! If you are open about being a Therian to your family and you feel like they would be willing to buy you a tail, perhaps educate them on cruel fur farm tails first!

Please note that these tails may vary in size, color, and pattern and may not exactly match the images displayed. The tails are from the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) species. These tails come with a ball chain and keychain clasp. You can detach the keychain and the ball chain separately if needed. Ask us about including a grommet, which is readily available at no additional charge.
These tails look fantastic as decorations for cabins, lodges, wall hangers, curiosity cabinets, and more. With these tails, anyone can do cosplay or expression for Therians, furries, otherkin, and Halloween costumes. The tails are a great addition as a charm, keychain, or other accessories for purses and other items.
A professional pet stylist has brushed these tails to help remove any debris and matting. On average, these fox tails typically measure 16 to 24 inches in length, though sizes can vary.
If needed, fur should be spot-cleaned with a soft and slightly dampened cloth using taxidermy-specific cleaners. Keep the tails out of direct sunlight and heat to prevent color fading, damage, or bleaching. The leather may dry out and start to crack due to low humidity. The leather may rot and mold due to high humidity. We recommend frequent dusting and keeping tails indoors in climate-controlled conditions. Please keep the fur away from bugs and insects - especially moths.
Tails are sourced ethically and sustainably from our suppliers and are already tanned when they arrive with us. There may be imperfections in the leather. We sell our tails following the guidelines established by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. When purchasing one of our items, you must follow all local laws, including but not limited to those of your city, county, and state. We will hold you liable for all penalties and legal expenses if you order a product you cannot legally own.
We will not sell to California due to the ban on the sale of new animal fur products implemented on January 1, 2023. We do not ship internationally.

I bought a tail from Etsy that came from China. It looks like a decent tail, natural colouring, no bleaching, pretty good size, no stock photos, was fairly pricey, and they said that they treat their animals well/don't kill wild ones. • @MelodiCat753
      @MelodiCat753 ปีที่แล้ว

@@PabloPerroPerro To add on, most farms that say they are "free-range" really means they get out rarely or they're in a giant pen. In the chicken industry, free-range chickens are in giant pens where each chicken gets less than an A4 piece of paper of space. Because the pen is so crowded, it is rarely cleaned, so the chickens live their entire lives standing on their own feces. While it's likely fox fur farms give the foxes more space, it still isn't going to be enough because foxes need a lot of space. Wolves in the Yellowstone region travel all the way to Yukon sometimes as predators need to travel to find food. The foxes are still confined, and the enclosure isn't enough. And this is the best case scenario where the foxes are outside rather than in cages.

This video made me realize I do have a cruel farmed tail. I bought it several years ago before I knew about this issue. I do have another, luckily ethically sourced silver fox tail. I bought it from a taxidermist, and honestly, you should always go through taxidermists.
As a taxidermist myself, I can say that we truly see the value in these animals, we know they’re not just some worthless thing we can kill for money, taxidermy is an art, and it requires skill. I personally have never killed an animal for its remains, I more work with bones than I do skins. What I’m saying is that trust us, we would never just farm animals so we could sell them, that’s not what taxidermy is, it’s about really getting into the nature and admiring it’s beauty and what it brings to us, we see animals as art, not money.

Thank you for this video. There is a shop at the Renaissance Festival I work at that sells tails and I am still morally at odds with myself about whether I would by a real tail even if it was ethically sourced, but next time I go there I will definitely use your tips to check. Here is what I know already:
    • They sell thinner and thicker tails - I’ve seen both types there
    • They sell colored tails too
    • They possess a lot of tails that look similar so it seems unlikely they died of natural causes (though that doesn’t rule out ethical fur farms)
I will add more later after I see them today.
If you have an idea if these tails are ethical or not, please let me know! Thanks!
Edit: I asked and was assured that the tails are ethically sourced.

I bought a tail today from a flea market for 10 dollars. One of my biggest concerns was if it came from an abused fox but luckily it has none of the red flags.

Oh my gosh no! I have been buying from aliexpress, BUT, I have only bought two. Thank you so much, I promise to BEVER buy from aliexpress, or any of those sites again. Especially because I live in australia, where it is hard to find taxidermy shops. Thank you so much again.

I’ve sent a lot of plot points from this video to my mom bc she’s gonna buy me a tail here soon, and I definitely don’t want it from a cruel source. She’s luckily listened so far haha-
