So it's been about a month and this totally works. I've been using it to supply my wife's bnb with ice. So 💯 this has been the best cheap way to do it at home.
Worked great. I needed smaller cubes and my clear ice machine I bought came out cloudy and runny. I make 18 cubes now and 2 spears for my Collins glass. And with the ice I break away I uses for shaking vodka martinis.
Tried this technique today, almost worked. It looks like 90% of the ice is clear starting from top. The bottom 10% is cloudy. Wondering why that is. The holes were not blocked. Thanks.
The size of the container and the level of water and duration u left it in the freezer matters too. Next time reduce the duration of time u kept it in the freezer, if u did 28hrs next time do 24hrs
@@romandianmixology as long as I have holes in each compartment of my silicone tray, it should be good? they don't have to be evenly as long as they're there, right?
What's your source for the silicone ice trays? The ones on Amazon have complaints about their smell or that they leave flakes in the ice or on glassware.
@@jdavis3055 mine is from Amazon as well. It is really important to clean it thoroughly before the first use n clean it well after use as well to make sure it doesn't leave calcium deposits
U right, that is one way of doing it however, in that process you spend more time and dont get precise cut, in this process u get precise 2 X 2 cubes and from what's left on the side you can carve an ice sphere and also have extra ice for shaking. So a lot of win-wins there 🥂
I mean it's great and all but isn't it a lot of work and space you need in your fridge i have 2 fridge and i have no space for a beg let alone an entire however it's called in English

The problem is that u will already have a lot of Ice and less water which means ur, it won't be direction freezing anymore and it will start freezing the water in the mold from all directions causing the air bubble to be trapped in the cube.
Do you have a bar freezer? If so what kind? I am looking for something that can store the small cooler, have ice storage, and chill some cocktail glasses.
I don't have a bar freezer, I bought a second hand 150liter freezer that looks like a small fridge for like 40 euro. It have 2 small compartments and one big one to fit my ice box
@@rhythmofc5598 the left over ice can be used for shaking or stirring, just store them and use them for various other purposes but make sure u empty it before starting again !
@@rhythmofc5598 unfortunately it won't work effectively, I had others ask the same question in comments, the point is to freeze the water from the top down only to create direction freezing. There are a couple of ways u can. #1: use the same method without the tray and cut and shape the ice with an ice pic. #2: u can buy a clear ice mold which makes the sphere shape clear ice as well, easy and convenient but a lil costly
Oh yeah but you can do like one small block at a time! You can cut open a plastic beverage bottle, insulated it with foam, or Styrofoam on all sides except on top, fill it with water and leave it in the freezer. The timing is coming you will have to keep an eye on, start with 8 hours in the freezer see the results and then increase or decrease time based on how the results turn out
Purified water eliminates chemicals and contaminants but may retain minerals. distilled water goes a step further by removing both contaminants and minerals. However, with that being said, for this process it doesn't matter if you use pure, distilled or tap water.
Im just wondering since the clear ice pushes the contaminants and minerals down, then is the clear ice free of contaminants? and does this method 'distill' the water similar to the normal boiling method? @@romandianmixology
@@33rdGemini I get ur logic but it's just not the mineral it pushes down but the dissolved gases as well which is present in water regardless of the quality. The whole reason for using an ice box is to create directional freezing so the ice starts forming from the top only. This will not be 100% possible in an Tupperware unless u figure out a way to insulate it from all directions like use styrofoam or foam sheets
Yeah it has to be a cooler, the point is to create an insulation on all sides except the top so water starts to freezes from the top only. A tupperware will not create a good insulation causing the water to freeze from all sides trapping the gases in the middle
We want the water to flow down that's the point ! We want to fill the whole ice box with the tray in it so that when the ice starts freezing it starts from the top pushing the air down through those holes
Correct me if I am wrong but the water in the ice tray must be touching the base of silicon mold cause if it doesn't touch it the water will flow down in the container or should I fill the ice tray up to the brim after placing the silicon mold?
@@jamesbond9181 place an object at the bottom of the Ice box that u can than place the silicon Mold on top of, the tip of the mold should reach like 80% of the height of the container. fill up the container with water and thats it. feel free to check out the video again, I am sure it will help.
It could work if you clear all ice from the ice box n top up the water level but I would not recommend as we want the water to chill from the top to bottom and having already chilled water might interfere with the directional freezing process
