The off-key carrot whistle really makes this sound like a bunch of men in a tavern who were joined by the SUPER drunk guy who somehow manages to carry on surprisingly coherent conversation even after several tankards of ale.
Oh my god they should have done this is school. That would be so interesting and might have sparked a lifelong passion for music and crafts. The idea that a person can just make their own instruments never would have occurred to me as a kid.
I'm still flabbergasted that Dave was able to drill holes in the carrot precisely enough to play it and produce accurate tones! I feel that would be quite difficult.
Whoo hoo! 🙌💪 You guys killed it! 100% my favorite version of Bully In The Alley. Love the creativity and determination with making your own instruments. Talented bunch! And your voices sound just grand too. Fun stuff.
We got Made With Ale Sessions This is makin some want “Made With Scrap Scissions” now and I for one agree with em Honestly amazing and absolutely goofy job guys.
Beautiful! My 3 year old sings almost exclusively your songs now (tonight's song is Old Maui), I will need to show him this one. I think he would enjoy it!
So cool-guitar thingee sounds (and played) in ways a mountain dulcimer is! I use a cut-off wooden spoon handle on my dulcimer though! Luv all the instruments guys, this is way great~vocals impressive as always🤩too
@@thelongestjohns I think it helps you went for a slide. My surprise is how well it can be heard in the mix. (also thank you for replying this is awesome!)
This has the same energy as when ye-real-old-timey-scallywags started throwing strings on things while lost at sea and inventing “geetars” and “ban joes” and “man dough lins”.
The instruments are cool and all but way more impressive is the copy of gloomhaven that actually nearly closes cleanly. That's true wizardry there. Mine is like six inches taller than intended because that's the best I can get it to close.
Yeah it sounded good! I feel like the style of the song and this vocal range is well suited to Dave's voice. I notice that a lot with the LJ songs. Their voices are all pretty different and they have different strengths suited to different types of songs.
Part of me wanted the instruments to start falling appart as you were using them, and then watch as you perfrom the song while utter chaos ensues. This version is also good though 😀
The link to the making instruments video is in the description. They allowed themselves 4 weeks, but how many man hours making involved is not mentioned.
So impressed with his getting actual accurate notes from the clothes-rack trombone.
Sharpie markings on the tube helped a lot
The off-key carrot whistle really makes this sound like a bunch of men in a tavern who were joined by the SUPER drunk guy who somehow manages to carry on surprisingly coherent conversation even after several tankards of ale.
It is delightfully “charming”
@@thelongestjohns Oh 100%. (This comment contains 0g of Sarcasm)
It reminds me of Sea of Thieves when you get drunk and try to play the instruments
For one of my music history courses, the whole class had to make their own instruments. Glad this turned out better!
Uh oh… that sounds like a fun story though
Oh my god they should have done this is school. That would be so interesting and might have sparked a lifelong passion for music and crafts. The idea that a person can just make their own instruments never would have occurred to me as a kid.
In the words of some old folks back home, "it's good enough for folk music!" Keep on making great music lads!
Ha, many thanks!
Really impressed by the reverse-engineered slide guitar, right down to being played while laying flat.
Thanks a lot! Was surprised how well it turned out
There is a lot of charm to these instruments! Love it
“Charm” being the most appropriate word :)
Man, that guitar has such a nice sound. Hope to see more from these instruments!
It turned out surprisingly functional
*casts necromancy on Dave's dinner*
I'm still flabbergasted that Dave was able to drill holes in the carrot precisely enough to play it and produce accurate tones! I feel that would be quite difficult.
I was hoping this would be officially released separately! Brb going to have this on loop the rest of the workday...
Hooray, enjoy!
Whoo hoo! 🙌💪 You guys killed it! 100% my favorite version of Bully In The Alley. Love the creativity and determination with making your own instruments. Talented bunch! And your voices sound just grand too. Fun stuff.
Name proposal for these instruments:
Andy's Horn of Wizardry
JD's Cigtar
Robbie's Organ of Childlike joy
And Dave's Turnips of Musicality
Very strong :)
So great the harmonies in this. The homemade instruments are so cool, too. I think they sound super fun. 😊
Dave with a stick has evolved to Dave with vegtables.
Which came first? The stick or the vegetable?
Clearly the druid of the party. 😜😁
Ha! 😄
i really love this version of the song. it seems so happy compared to other versions, and just gets me in a good mood. Great job guys!
That was ... ummmm... rather unusual. One might even say it was entirely adequate. Thanks guys.
Success!!
Incredibly amazed at the quality what you four can put together even with homemade instruments. Keep up the work lads
Will we see a rendition of this song on an album any time soon? Love it!
Was the first time we’ve done it “properly”. Was a lot of fun, so never say never
that was surprisingly adequate given the tools presented haha well done, lads. I'll see you in Atlanta!
See you there!!
1:04 "Found myself with time so free" Yeah obviously! Really nice work guys. Can't wait to see y'all at your Houston concert!
You can tell :) See you there!
@@thelongestjohns Great performance! Hope you found a good spot for my scrimshaw.
We got Made With Ale Sessions

Honestly amazing and absolutely goofy job guys.
Ha, that would be an experience! glad you enjoyed it
Lesson learned, if it can vibrate at a frequency, it can make music
Science!!
I just have to comment on how good Dave's nails look! The designs look great.
❤️
What were the designs? I noticed that there was something fancy on his nails, but couldn't make it out.
@@thewiseturtle you can see them clearest at 0:44 to me they look like butterflies!
Honestly, at this point I’d be surprised if you ever release a song that I *don’t* instantly love. ❤❤❤
Ps: congrats Andy! 🎉
Thanks so much! Even one as mad as this version?
@@thelongestjohns Especially one as mad as this version!
All I can see right now is the ACTUAL longest johns also known as the cardboardest johns and very real not made from random thing instruments
Definitely nonsense instruments. Check the full video in the description for the full story
This is my most fav rendition of the song!
Andy's "Sally... all she did was dilly and dally" lyric is 💯% iconic. 😂🤣
You guys are always such a joy to watch! Also, love the song. So happy you did one of my faves ☺️
Guy I need this on spotify along with the other song relay challenge you guys made!!!
Uh oh… what have we started?
This and walk off the earth's homemade instruments make me glad there are people with this much interest and passion for the music
Love it. One of my favorite sea shanties.
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed our janky instrument version
Utter insane genius, and so creative and inspiring.
Or just insane… either or :)
@@thelongestjohns I believe what Eleanor Burns describes is The Longest Johns as a whole, you lads are utterly insane but you execute it well!
The quality of the music is impressive. Even with makeshift instruments, it sounds so good !
Congrats Andy for the win (and the most epic t-shirt) !
Beautiful! My 3 year old sings almost exclusively your songs now (tonight's song is Old Maui), I will need to show him this one. I think he would enjoy it!
Now this needs to apear on tour 😂😂
Oh goodness…
So cool-guitar thingee sounds (and played) in ways a mountain dulcimer is! I use a cut-off wooden spoon handle on my dulcimer though! Luv all the instruments guys, this is way great~vocals impressive as always🤩too
Love the guitar for this. Well done
Thank you! Surprised it turned out so well
@@thelongestjohns I think it helps you went for a slide. My surprise is how well it can be heard in the mix. (also thank you for replying this is awesome!)
I don't know why, but I get major Barrower feelings from those instruments 😂 I love it!
Hooray!
this sounds bad in a way that's good and cool. love it and would love to see more DIY instruments in the future
There’s certainly an air of “charm” about it
@@thelongestjohns that's the word i was looking for
Giving Kimber's Men a run for their money with this lads, fantastic job!
That slide guitar tho! the trombone was my fav still though!! whimsical and sounded good!
We need a full album of these instruments now!
i think daves might be down for the count after a week or two
The clothes-rack trombone looks quite uh, tiring?
The instruments look amazing though!
They also sound kinda nice together.
Very funky at least!
“Charming” you could say
Cant wait to see yall in San Fran!!
Me either!

Yes finally TLJ do Bully in the Alley! Day made! :D
Does this count? :P

Who's playing Andy's Horn of Wizardry while he's singing? BTW, hope you occasionally use these or other improvised instruments in the future.
We did a take for instruments and one for vocals and put it together. Wanted to be able to show both
I noticed that with Dave as well
This is honestly hilarious and clever at the same time. Great job once again fellas haha
Thank you for making me always so happy :)
i was worried about andy that he would run out of breath😂.btw lovely song. i couldn't stop singing it with you lads.nice job.👌👌
hahaha wow, turned out great. Creative instruments all!
Oh this is awesome
Thank you!! :)
Adequate!
Huzzah!
This fills me with joy 🥰
Me too :)
Its not a challenge with your voices boys!
You’re too kind :)
Love you fellas
❤️
For all the instruments, they all sound pretty nice but out of the vocals Dave has the best verse
Yeah it sounded good! I feel like the style of the song and this vocal range is well suited to Dave's voice. I notice that a lot with the LJ songs. Their voices are all pretty different and they have different strengths suited to different types of songs.
The guy with the gauges needs to teach me how to sing
Och Robbie slays
Love it! Added to the playlist! 🤩
I’m impressed! You got more notes out of that carrot than I can get out of an actual fife! 😂
Part of me wanted the instruments to start falling appart as you were using them, and then watch as you perfrom the song while utter chaos ensues. This version is also good though 😀
Dave’s sort of fell apart at the end there
That was cool
Glad you enjoyed!
Clothes dryer trombone coming on tour when??
Oh gosh, that would be a thing!
Ha! "And the crowd goes wild!"
That slide guitar is a legitimate Stringy Planky.
I loved it
Thank you!!
Bravo gentlemen. :)
Beautiful 😊
Nice instruments.
What the heck did I miss where did those instruments come from and why are they a thing
The full video where they do the challenge. This is just the song extracted from the end of it.
There’s a link in the description to the original video where we built them
If the flying heads from Rick&Morty arive here this is what we need to show
Love it
Thank you :)
@@thelongestjohns thank you, you guys are by far my favorite shanty band
Wow, the closed captions for this video were hilarious, and then they gave up and just displayed [Music].
loved it :P
Were any of those mushrooms- Amanita muscuras- in use before the jam? 🍄🌠
Is that guy playing legos? 😂
Longest Johns shenanigans are the best shenanigans 😆
Beyond adequate! Such a lovely way to start the day.
Hooray!!
Have you used any of these since?
Good song! But as some one who has heard all your music, not your strongest mastering effort (but still a very good song 🙂)
Noiceeeeee
Thank you :)
First comment. Guess first round is on me
I'll drink to that!
well the first round being on you wouldn't do us any harm...
I'll take a cider mate

I gotta ask, is that Kano's decapitated head? Oh, and why?
How long did it take to make the instruments
