If you digitize the actual master tapes, provided that the tapes have been kept in good condition, the footage will look this good. People mistake the physical degradation of film and tape over time for the supposed poor quality of the camera at the time. The resolution was definitely much lower but the image quality of original footage largely has to do with the skill of the cameraman, the sensitivity and sharpness of the lenses and how well the original tapes have held up over time. Also, a lot of what you see from the past on TH-cam are copies of copies. Copying in analog video means losing quality at a much steeper ratio than most simple digital copying, where compression algorithms determine the image quality. The former is more like what happens when you photocopy a photocopy.

My English teacher when I was in 8th grade described the stores exactly how you described them. Just empty and a employee was looking at her like she had two heads and said "What are you doing here? Go home!" All my teachers at the time described the city that day as something straight out of a Resident Evil game without the zombies. No air traffic for days. We live in Chicagoland so I suppose everyone was preparing for an attack to occur near the area. I was only a year and a half so I can only go off of what others told me and video footage like this. Very disturbing.
The night of 9/11 was the cultural start of the 21st century, nobody expected this to happen, but it did, and it shocked the world and changed the world overnight. The 1990s ended in name on January 1st, 2000, but the 1990s ended culturally on the morning of September 11th, 2001.
I remember hearing a nurse saying where are all the people, and patients? Someone said to her they are in the air. 😭😭 Took a while for people to realise that there were no people or bodies. Just dust. 💔
@Sly! - concrete, yes, but also all sorts of other materials. Glass and paper and human bodies turned to dust. Not to mention fireproofing material, much of it acutely hazardous to human lungs. Ground Zero was physically toxic to so many who survived 9/11 with no outward injuries.

Agreed. I was born after this incident and I just accepted it the same way I accepted that the Holocoust was a part of history too. It's really horrific actually sitting and thinking about what that moment must have been like for those who lived through it.
I first read it off a Wikipedia page, I mistook the deaths and thought is was only 6, when I was told the actual death toll I was absolutely horrified and disgusted at what people do sometimes
This sort of footage needs to be shown more often. On 9/11, every year after, we held a moment of silence, and that was it. I feel like more people need to see what happened, not to be told secondhand stories. The look in those people's eyes tells more of a story then anything else ever could.

The difference is that all the attacks were in one day. When there is a war, more buildings are bombed, there are shooters too, regular and snipers, communication is scarce, there are no services like electricity or even potable water. As traumatic as that event was, people in NYC still went to the comfort of their houses.

I was coming from a tour of the observation deck of the Freedom tower and the tour guide said the whole area was basically demolished because of the attacks. I was 7, still remember this day very clearly, seeing it on the news, couldn’t believe it back then, can’t believe it now how people can be so cruel, so full of hatred. This feels very personal, feels like it was my city, my country and my people even though I’m not American.
The day this happened, I’d just started an Access Course that morning (In England) at a local college as a mature (45) student. I was at work in a local ‘One Stop’ shop in the afternoon when a customer came rushing in to tell us what was happening in New York. It was about 14:30 our time. I honestly couldn’t get my head around what he meant until I got home and saw it on TV. I was horrified seeing the planes, the fires and the collapse of the towers. Next morning, there were pictures in the papers of those poor souls jumping from the burning towers. It’s something you never forget no matter where in the world you lived that day. 🌺
I just started second grade when this happened, I remember sitting in my classroom in the dark while we waited hours until they lifted the school lock down, my mom picked me up from school hugging me, slight tears in her eyes, I remember seeing it on the TV when I got home, but I was young, I didn't fully grasp what had happened, but I remember it so clearly.

The night of 9/11 was the cultural start of the 21st century, nobody expected this to happen, but it did, and it shocked the world and changed the world overnight. The 1990s ended in name on January 1st, 2000, but the 1990s ended culturally on the morning of September 11th, 2001.

Dust, so much dust. . . How could that be possible?
@Sly! - concrete, yes, but also all sorts of other materials. Glass and paper and human bodies turned to dust. Not to mention fireproofing material, much of it acutely hazardous to human lungs. Ground Zero was physically toxic to so many who survived 9/11 with no outward injuries.

This sort of footage needs to be shown more often. On 9/11, every year after, we held a moment of silence, and that was it. I feel like more people need to see what happened, not to be told secondhand stories. The look in those people's eyes tells more of a story then anything else ever could.

It's not "like" a warzone, it *is* a warzone. This was an act of war.
The difference is that all the attacks were in one day. @@OIR339 you don't know what you're talking about, just because you became one of those overzealous bloodthirsty "patriots" doesn't mean you have more a right to speak on it. I wasn't on a revenge kick like many, just trying to find out what happened from a historical sense. You should find out what we did to prisoners who we now know were innocent. Find out how great america was as a beacon of hope and civilization after this.
@@Junksaint I don’t care. I stated a fact in response to your opinion. You responded with prejudice crass.
I want to offer this video a like because it’s incredible journalism and a glimpse into the past yet I can’t bring myself to because of the tragedies from that day.
Give it a like not because you "like" what happened, but so it gets the attention it needs. Especially to the victims. Obviously with the ongoing pandemic it's become 100x worse, but beforehand this was a huge turning point and arguably the transition between the old and new world.

It's hard to wrap my mind around all of this being 20 years ago. I was just 8 years old at the time.

I still find it insane that three people survived from above where the plane hit like I just can’t imagine the fear and then the happiness
0:56 you see on the fire truck there is an outline of New York City and you can see the World Trade Center on it. It must be sad seeing that on that day knowing it’s no longer there, just lost to time

Those that fought that day would be so sad to see our country now. People sacrificed their lives for us, let us never forget that.

I’m British and was 10 months old when this happened, but my mum was the same age that I am right now and she remembers how even the uk was quiet that day as she went to work.
I was two years old, my sister was seven months old. My mum was home alone, dad was away on a business trip in Holland. She remembers getting a call his boss who was trying to reassure her my dad was ok, which he was, thank God. But I can't imagine how it felt to be an adult that day.
You watch the mightiest nation on earth (at the time) getting shrouded in screams, smoke, terror and ash. Even in other countries, like Britain, you'd feel sickness because no-one knew who was next. My mum says it was horrible, watching it play on the news as me and my sister were in the background, she had no idea what sort of world we would inherit.
It was truly one of the worst days in humanity's history.
September 2001 everyone came together all unite
2021- America devided badly, sadly 😔🙏
I was in 8th grade math class when this happened. Utter shock and disbelief from my teacher. We all crowded around his computer to look. None of the other classes allowed radios on. They wanted it to remain business as usual to keep the students calm. I went home that afternoon and watched the news all night with my parents (and recorded some of it on a blank VHS tape). Haunting memories.
Like Chernobyl, this disaster is still affecting lives today.
in what way is it like chernobyl ?
@@mustafa-cx2fg People involved in 9/11 can be dying from cancer due to the ash and inhaling dust to this day.
Chernobyl workers who were exposed to radiation are also facing negative effects on their health
