    i'm a bit sad reading all the comments about her dancing. Perhaps it's not obvious to non-Australians, but it derives from the dances of Indigenous Australians, some of the oldest (if not the oldest) in the world. To me it's beautiful

    • @drr5380
      @drr5380 6 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      Thanks Stephen. Some one wrote she looked drunk or stoned with her dancing. Not cool.

    • @isuatam6542
      @isuatam6542 6 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      Right! Someone called it "wild gorilla dances". Disappointed but not surprised by the level of ignorance here.

    • @drr5380
      @drr5380 6 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      For other acts with 'different' types of lyrics or choreography, I do a quick search to understand them better. A shame that some people are not doing the same for Jess, as she's honouring her country and heritage with some traditional dance moves. Agreed, it's beautiful.

    • @michaelafischer6177
      @michaelafischer6177 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Wow, lovely response. :) It really hurts me to see all of the insensitive comments. Jess' choreography is inspired by the traditional dancing of her people, specifically the serpent dreaming.

    • @michaelafischer6177
      @michaelafischer6177 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Our indigenous culture IS beautiful, and it should be respected and treasured, but as disheartening as the response by ESC fans has been, I can't support such a divisive comment. Actually, I love the Eurovision. I think it has an important place in encouraging cross-cultural unity and understanding on a very diverse and divided continent.
      I'm also essentially European myself, although that might not have been clear, from my comment. I'm German-Australian, first generation Australian, and my partner is a Swedish citizen. Europe is my second home. Blanket statements about its worthiness seem redundant, given the lack of similarities between its countries. One country can be a social democracy, while another can be a borderline dictatorship.
      One of the reasons Australians have connected with the Eurovision so strongly (it's been screening in Aus for decades) is that the citizenry as a whole is uniquely connected to Europe. Not several generations back, as in America. A huge percentage of us are born to European parents or grandparents. That contemporary connection to European culture is deeply apparent in our major cities and our multicultural way of life.
      However, I don't want to be damning, because I do acknowledge Europe's dark past (including the dark past of my own ancestor culture), and if you happen to be Indigenous yourself, I recognise absolutely the tragedy of European colonialism, as well as the ongoing hurt in the continued denial by those cultures responsible. I can only imagine that seeing my special, ancient culture compared to simian behaviour would make me want to say horrible things, too. There's a lot of pain in having to deal with comments like that on a regular basis.

    • @martinsmutny800

      Unfortunately she sounded like train wreck. Only tone deaf people can say it was a good performance. And I'm not going to mention the dress and makeup.... So bad. Pity because she is a good singer

    • @drr5380
      @drr5380 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Martin Smutny - I wouldn't go that far. Agreed her vocal was not her best. But she sold the performance and had energy. Also, I cannot reconcile Saara Aalto from Finland coming in second to last place. It was a solid performance.

    • @drr5380
      @drr5380 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Berk - I think Brett is just saying that Jess is a popular and well loved Aussie performer. She has been in the spotlight for many years and is very approachable, especially with fans. She loves her singing and acting and works very hard at both. She also gives back to the community and uses her star power for good. Excuse all this text, just gives you a bit more about Jess:
      One of Australia’s most successful female artists, Jessica Mauboy is from outback Australia with her family originating from the Indigenous tribe KuKu Yalanji. Her musical journey began in 2006 with Australian Idol, and since then Jessica has sold over 2.5 million units in Australia, achieved fourteen Top 30 hit singles from three studio albums, four (4) ARIA accredited Platinum selling albums and received numerous awards including the 2014 ARIA Award for Best Female and the 2012 ARIA Award for Best Pop Release. In 2010 Jessica included actress to her title when she made her film debut in the Australian film musical Bran Nue Dae which also starred Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush. This was followed up with a starring role in the internationally celebrated and multi award winning feature The Sapphires. Premiering at the special midnight screening at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the musical feature was released internationally to rave reviews, with Jessica receiving both the AACTA Award and AFCA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her outstanding portrayal of the role of Julie. Throughout her stellar music career to date, as well as performing her own sell-out national tours, Jessica has performed with international artists including Beyoncé, Flo Rida and Chris Brown and has performed for celebrities, dignitaries and presidents including Barak Obama, as well as on the shows of both Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres. Throughout, Jessica has been actively involved in lending her hand to charity and is a key role model to the Indigenous community in Australia with involvement in many organisations ranging from mentoring, performing and education. Jessica also became one of few notable Australians to feature on the iconic Sesame Street when she filmed the Five Kangaroo’s in Alice Springs with some of the students from the Yipirinya School. In 2014 Jessica made history when she was invited to perform as a guest at the Eurovision Song Contest in Denmark, being the first non-European solo artist to do so. This followed a performance at the Official Flag Handover Ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In 2016, Jessica made ARIA Chart history being the first indigenous woman to achieve three consecutive weeks at #1 for her release of ‘Songs from the Original TV Series - The Secret Daughter’ album along with her TV series activing debut in Seven Network’s drama ‘The Secret Daughter’. 2017 will see Jessica tour Australia in April and return to the TV screens in Series 2 of The Secret Daughter which will also have an accompanying album. Jessica is the official Ambassador for Fox Sports new Fox League channel which will be launched in February.

    2 years later and still love that she included the aboriginal traditional dance into her act even though the Australian team knew that the audience might not get it. She sang with her entire soul, had fun and the audience inside the stadium went nuts. Definitely ripped from a better place. Still love it.

      Actually, compared with her usual performance, her crowd interaction was a bit muted at times, I think she was concentrating on the camera, and that led to the vocals being a bit flat. Such a powerful song - hope it will win tonight! To all those who're criticising her dancing: it's so nice to see a unique act that doesn't blend in with the generic mainstream of the last years, but truly represents the country's culture. Those Aboriginal dance moves bring back what the ESC originally had stood for.

      Jiggly Puff she has been supporting Australia in the music industry for years (since 2008) and has had a few acting opportunites. Not to mention she’s aboriginal which gives her even more reason to represent Australia. I was talking about new people, who haven’t had that experience, getting put up there to represent Australia. I’m talking mostly about that guy that was put up last year. He was talented no doubt but I don’t think he has the experience that Jessica Mauboy has and he is missing that stage presence that Mauboy has (due to lack of experience). I’m not hating on him and as I said he undoubtedly is talented, I feel that he doesn’t quite have the experience or growth of fame in Australia to be put on Eurovision. He also hasn’t grown as an artist at that stage and hasn’t developed his own music further whereas Jessica Mauboy has. Maybe in a couple of years I’d get it. Point is that is why I feel that Jessica Mauboy earned that spot on Eurovision and why I believe that new X factor winners aren’t quite suited for Eurovision until they’ve truly represented Australia and earned their way there.

    Her dance represents her root as an indigious Aborigin girl - which sadly most Europeans don't understand (and some gives less respect). I feel her soul as a modern Australian who doesnt forget her Aboriginal root.

    I wish people would stop complaining about her DRESS...SHOES and DANCE STYLE...the dress is about how she feels in it with all its colours and the freedom she has to move in it on stage...her shoes represents fire, where love is stronger than fire and her dance moves are a mix of modern dance and indigenous female dancer representing a SERPENT.Good luck Jessica in the Final...Thankyou for representing Australia and your people.....
