I have hummingbird feeders on my deck outside my bedroom. One morning, I heard a bird singing as I was getting out of bed, was curious as I didn’t recognize what type of bird it could be, and was amazed when I saw the hummingbird on the perch I hung next to the feeder, head high, singing away, looking so happy. I cried.

This is an Anna’s hummingbird. A Costa’s hummingbird is similar except he is iridescent purple instead of pink. Both live year round here in Arizona, but they also will migrate north and south with the seasons. Their nests are about the size of a sewing thimble and the eggs are the size of a TicTac candy. The nest is built using spider web silk, so it is both strong and stretchy. She camouflages it by sticking bits of leaves and twigs to the spider silk. I have seen nests built under the eaves of a covered patio. Usually, it is up high, like on a string of fairy lights up in the rafters. Or built on an overhead light fixture. They also like a thick juniper bush to hide a nest in. They are nature’s jewels.
It's an ingenious trick of evolution - the iridescence of its gorget (the feather collar) ensures that this little tiny bird doesn't call attention to himself when he's just buzzing about looking for food; but when the time comes to impress a lady, he can show off his true splendor to them by making the light reflect off his feathers just right.
I live on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I have to keep my humming bird feeders full all year, since these hummingbirds stay through the winter. ❤️
It’s interesting that this very fact is explained in the first paragraph about Anna’s Humminbirds on Wikipedia: “It is native to western coastal regions of North America. In the early 20th century, Anna's hummingbirds bred only in northern Baja California and Southern California. The transplanting of exotic ornamental plants in residential areas throughout the Pacific coast and inland deserts provided expanded nectar and nesting sites, allowing the species to expand its breeding range. Year-round residence of Anna's hummingbirds in the Pacific Northwest is an example of ecological release dependent on acclimation to colder winter temperatures, introduced plants, and human provision of nectar feeders during winter.”
I feel like such a dope. After all these years, I never thought about hummingbirds having a Call. Not once. Have probably been hearing them all my life and never realized 🤦🏼♀️. Thank u for opening my ears!!
What a glorious little bird....that isn't singing tho....I saw the hummingbirds through harsh, snowy winters in western Washington, taking feeders in at night, bringing them out before daybreak. One spring day, I was walking along the walkway which had a tree branch that extended across walkway & there sat a hummingbird. When I stopped to admire him, he sang to me. Like a songbird. I lived in California for years, had so many hummies, but never, before or since, have I heard a hummingbird sing like that. He was mere feet away from me, just above eye level. I have always considered it a special show of gratitude, one that nests in my soul forever.
I have a special friendship with a bluejay now for almost five years. Each winter I’m afraid I won’t see him again but he shows up, giving me a call not given humans. I feel so honored.
@@heatherwhatever7714 - How special, that's a true gift from God.🕊 About 14 years ago, I hand-raised a robin that I found lost from it's mother & dehydrated in the street. When he got to where he could fly, he would hop on top of my head & dance with his feet while singing his happy song! I was sad the day he decided to strike out on his own. The next spring after the robins returned, I was standing in the yard trying to decide what to do next. All of a sudden a robin flew towards me & landed on my head! I held really still, sure enough, I could feel his feet dancing up & down & he began to sing my favorite robin song!
I've been privileged to hold a hummingbird in my hands twice. Once to help one out of a library where it had gotten stuck, and once to save one from a cat. They seem to weigh nothing at all in your hand, less than a styrofoam peanut. But they have a lot of personality! Both of them gave me a good telling off for daring to lay my dirty ape paws on them!
We have tons of these little guys where I live . I see and hear them all day . Outside of my house , my work , running errands and at the park . It feels almost like they follow me everywhere not a day goes by I don’t see them or hear them no matter the weather .
@@adrianagflores5587 California, US. Hopefully someday I'll visit your country & this place definitely. I checked these birds are found on Western coast in N. America. Thanks.
We have tons of Anna's in San Diego, Ca. I take care of about 15 year round but now during migration I have quite a bit more. My biggest problem is my male who has been here for awhile. He is a big meanie.
Birdsong is so beautiful to hear because we cannot understand it. If we were able to understand every call, it would sound like "Hey, check me out", "guys there's a hawk here", "I'm so cool, I'm so cool", "I'm hungry, man!" on loop throughout the day in 100 different languages. Like a noisy crowd. But they'd still look stunning.
What a beautiful little bird! I love his calls and the way his feathers flare out as if to say “I’m making an important announcement now!” Thank you for this terrific vidro.
Nope. This is a kind all its own. Just as it did not come from a reptile, it will NEVER 'evolve' into something else. It is a birb and a birb it will stay.
Beautiful flashing gorget. I saw this whole thing about how hummingbirds attract mates and it's simultaneously very cool, very cute, and very dumb. The female will sit on a little branch to watch. The male will climb up into the sky, higher than she should be able to see, and facing into the sun he'll flash his gorget (those under chin feathers) and reflect the colour back at her. He'll then basically drop from the sky in a controlled dive and right when he passes her at the lowest point he'll rasp some of his feathers together making what must be to her a very arousing and attractive sound but to us sounds like a high-pitched fart. Hummingbirds might be a poor excuse for a bird evolutionarily but boy are they cute.
Fabulous! Thanks for posting this. I did not know hummingbirds even had a song. But on top of that, your photography was excellent! The ruff collar on that bird turning from black to irridescent violet and purple in the sun was superb.
The color is absolutely beautiful, and I like the way the feathers on his gorget flare out at the sides. Very nice video.
Thanks God for this beautiful creature
That and their ability to hover in place. Great design by the Creator.

Amazing how the reflections go from black to brilliant magenta, so flash, absolutely beautiful
Iridescence is so cool
The iridescence of those feathers is nothing short of nature's wonder. I love how it appears to be screaming for silence. And gets it!😆

Hello same here. I thought they just Buzzed.
They sound nothing like this video. You were hearing black birds in the background.
I've heard them make an alarm sound like a ray-gun when they see cats or other predators. Hummingbirds have a lot of tricks we don't know about.
Look at the gorgeous iridescence! Beautiful bird.
I saw one of these up close by pure chance a while ago, it really felt like nature was giving me a gift in that experience
