There is value in learning from those who have come before. They seem to have hatched these designs in a vacuum. Folks were riding 4+ times that speed in the 1990's in Japan on Aquabike Hydrofoils that actually foiled.

For being from universities they sure dropped the ball on this one. I see that zero time was spent studying current technologies (i.e. rowing, paddle boats etc) they could have used these studies as baselines to improve on not some halfassed guestimates. I once seen a crew row a boat fast enough to pull a skier. Now that was impressive!!

    • @user-yv2cz8oj1k

Do you see any push from the university there? Normally the marketing departments would be all over it, I'm guessing they were left to fend for themselves with no budget or extra resources to accomplish the goal. Even though it would have been a great bit of publicity.

Changing prop pitch and gear teeth at the same time are a little of a no no. I find it hard to believe a prop in the air is better than one in the water. If this was only because of the foil it would be easily overcame with a long shaft. Nice project tho. Looks like fun. Its alot to achieve foiling with pedal power alone.

@@rogerhearn7109 - I know all about Guy's job, it wasn't him that I was having a go at, but the "experts" he surrounded himself with on this occasion. It was one of these idiots that I saw holding a nut with a pair of molegrips. I was trained to be an engineer, and that isn't in the instruction manual. This is indicative of the engineering approach to the project, and why it was such a monumental failure.

Both boats about the same length and neither got onto the plane, therefore the speed is limited by the Hull Speed of a fully Displacement Boat. The Hull Speed is given by maximum speed of a displacement hull is the square root of the waterline x 1.3.
How does this compare with what you achieved?

Not to discourage Guy Martin for his great effort here, but this is nowhere close to the fastest human powered boat in the world today. It might be for a displacement hull, as each of these attempts were. The foil borne record is much faster and it is sad to see that Guy was not able to get up out of the water.

It simply needs a rethink, I;m sure neither design was spot on to what was wanted or specced due to outside limitations and communications. A few tests, some data, and redesigns, and I'm sure they would get a lot faster, the issue is they weren't getting to aquaplane speed, which is something that requires a lot of time to achieve at lower speeds. So, what are they talking about here ??? Clicks generating? They surely got thumbs down from me, and now the channel is also forever blocked (which I´d reverse, if they´d openly admit clickbaiting, or prove that I was wrong)...

Why is the course length 100m and the speed given in mph? Metres/second might be a bit more logical. Brits are weird. No wonder Brexit.

Because speed is measure in mph here. Would be no different in some other country doing it and saying kph

I wonder if it would be faster if it had a prop on the hull as well as that prop above..They need another certain cyclist guy from the IOM. Hes a better cyclist.

5.5 miles per hour for a whole hundred yards? Hell, I averaged 5.3 miles per hour for 25 kilometers competing in my touring (not racing!) kayak, and I was 71 years old at the time. The winner (I placed second) averaged 5.48 mph, and he was 78 years old. (None of the really fast guys in my club competed.) A 100 yard sprint that took 37 seconds doesn't impress me. Try maintaining that speed for two hours and 55 minutes...
