    Hi Huw: A very interesting video, and I am glad that you got this worked out. When I was shooting Olympus I found that Gavin's TH-cam channel provided some great information. This just goes to show you that Olympus always has a way to solve for issues but somethings they are not the most elegant solution to get find. Keep well . . . Cheers, Keith

      Thank you Keith. You are right, TH-cam is an excellent resource for "how to" and I use it a lot to find out how to do the things that I want. I would say though that there is not a huge amount out there about OM-D and bracketing, and combining it with a custom shutter - hence making this video to give it a shout out! Hope all is well where you are sir.

    Good video Huw - whilst you talk about the Olympus, the principle can apply to any system, for example I use Nikon and occasionally use bracketing (more so before investing in a filter system) but I had not thought about assigning it to a custom setting, so thank you for that.

      Thanks Paul. Bracketing is a principal that I struggled to grasp on the OM-D system so now I've found a way to work it I just had to set it down on video just in case there was someone else out there with the same challenge :)

    A great video. I had totally missed that you can configure a custom selftimer to take multiple images. If you only need a moderate increase of the dynamic range I think that an alternative could be to use the handheld high res. mode. That should also reduce the noise a lot so that it would be easier to lighten the shadow areas in post. I am new to your channel and have still a lot to learn about Olympus cameras, and I have immediately subscribed after having realized the number of useful videos.

    • @huwalban
      @huwalban  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Henrik. Most kind and grateful for your support. Hi-res is reported to result in a dynamic range increase, but in practice I've still found the highlights to be more of a challenge to recover in software. You are right though, the Olympus RAW files are reasonably good at recovering shadow details without introducing too much noise.

    Thank you very much for this excellent tutorial. I'm very happy that my new OM-5 has these same features 😃 But yet I wonder, why not using the in-camera HDR function ?? And maybe one last question : is it possible to stack the 3 images with OM.Worspace ? Thanks a lot by the way 👍

    • @huwalban
      @huwalban  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you. Most kind. I don’t use HDR much because 1. The HDR effect is applied to a JPG and not to a RAW file, and connected to that 2. If I bracket then I have all the options I would want when I get home. With regard to OM Workspace, this is an app that I did not use much so I’m sorry I do not know. The person mentioned in the video (Gavin Hoey) may well have something on his channel that could help you.

    Cool workaround, Huw. I think my camera will run the continuous drive until all bracketed shots are made and then pause. I think the real moral of this story is to spend a lot of time getting to know our cameras. Thanks.

      @@huwalban The custom mode for bracketing is slick. I bet it becomes popular in the OM community.

  • @MikePageKaltenberg
    @MikePageKaltenberg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You need to go into the hdr options, not exposure bracketing. Easy to customise to a button such as the +/- knob, no need for a custom mode. +/- 0.3 ev is very low for overcoming dynamic range limitations. I generally shoot 3x at +/- 2, more if it's a sunset.

    • @huwalban
      @huwalban  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike. I’ve tried the HDR options and just couldn’t get on with them, hence my resorting to the “old fashioned” approach however I agree with your sentiment on the bracketing gap. With a bit more experience I have made my brackets wider as you suggested.

      Greetings Pete, and many thanks for your very kind words. I have tried bracketing in post, but I'm more inclined to try to use the camera in the field if I can - after all I've paid out for the technology so I may as well try to use it. You are right though - there are many ways to achieve a similar result! Stay safe out there.

    I found this video very useful and looks an excellent workaround. So, I thought I’d try it on my new Olympus System OM-1 and I’m unable to make it work. When I set the custom timer button as you have done, then go to select bracketing (any bracketing) it changes to sequential shooting! How incredibly annoying this is….thank you for this, all the same

      Many thanks for your kind words. It would appear on the OM-1 they have changed the way this is implemented. It would be work checking Gavin Hoey's TH-cam channel as I'm told it is a treasure trove of advice on the OM system. Additionally, there is a Facebook group called "Olympus OM-D Owners Group UK" which has one of the ambassadors - a chap called Dax Smith - who is also very knowledgeable and helpful. Many thanks for watching and I hope that I've been able to point you in useful direction.

    Glad you got it sorted, but what a ffaff?
    On my Panasonic G9 in comparison, how easy this is; simply select from the menu the number of frames for bracketing, EV steps and in which order the shots are taken.
    Then assign one of the customisable buttons on the camera to bracketing, job done, all bracketed images taken in one shutter press. A simple flick of a switch to turn bracketing on / off.

    • @huwalban
      @huwalban  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it is the same on my Sigma fpL. Thing is that each camera system will have its own approach to procedures like this. I wouldn't say that the OMD one is overly complicated once you have it set up, but I would say that it took some working out - hence the video to share it. Thanks for watching Jon and thank you for leaving a comment - all greatly appreciated.

    Does hand held bracketing cause motion blur?

    • @huwalban
      @huwalban  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question - I'll be honest I don't know. With the IS on, unless the +1 & 3/4 stops image was "really" slow, I suspect that you'd get away with it.

    Hi, I am trying to configure continuous automatic shooting as shown in the video but when I have activated the BKT mode it does not let me activate it, that option is disabled. If I remove the BKT and if I get the option but both at the same time impossible, what could be the problem? I am using an OM1.

      Hello there. Many thanks for watching my video and for leaving a comment. Unfortunately I am not a user of the OM-1, so am unable to answer your question. Thanks David. I might be wrong but I'm sure that the HDR function only produces a JPG. Bracketing and then combining in software results in a TIF or other format that can still be worked as a RAW file, with all the advantages that that gives us.
