  • Keeping your cast iron cookware non-stick is essential for hassle-free cooking, especially when working on a homestead. Here are some tips to maintain that perfect seasoning.
If your pan loses its non-stick properties, it's time to re-season. Strip off any old seasoning by heating the pan until it turns ashy. Once cooled, rub a thin layer of flaxseed oil over the entire surface and bake it once at 410°F then up to its smoke point for an hour to polymerize the new seasoning.
With proper care and maintenance, your cast iron will develop that coveted glass-like finish, ensuring effortless food release and easy cleanup on the homestead.

Hey there! Maybe I got it wrong because my English is not the best, but you do this 2 hour skillet (re)seasoning baking every time you cooked with you're cast iron cookware? I'm living in Germany and I cook 3 - 5 times a week with my castiron cookware. If I would have to bake the skillets about 1,5 - 2 hours every time I used some of it my electicity bill would go nuts! Baking in the oven here is really expensive and imagine doing it 3-5 times a week just to maintain the seasoning would be crazy! At least here in Germany!

@double_high_c you're doing a great job by using your cast iron that frequently! I reseason on the stove top as well and anytime I bake something in the oven, i always place some of my cast iron on a second rack to make use of the oven as efficiently as I can. Greetings to 🇩🇪!

@@BadRiverWells Ohh thank you for your answer! Yeah I love my cast iron cookware! I have some stainless steel and carbon steel cookware too! Stainless steel mostly for sauces with acid and carbon steel for egg and wok stuff! But just raw material cookware no teflon emaile or other coated stuff! And yeah I thought so I do the stove top maintanance seasoning between my cookings and I was just a little surprised that I should bake my pans for 2 hours nearly every day! ;-)
Are you doing your stove top seasoning different to the one you showed in the video?
After cleaning my cast iron I do the oiling exactly as you showed it and then I put it back on the burner and let it come to a smoke, let it smoke for about 1 min and then shut of the burner and let it cool! Is this what you do too? Thank you in advance again! :-)

Yes it does. I'm trying different ways to strip it and start over. Also looking into other brands. What are your favorite brands?

Yes. Some have worked well, and others not so much. I'm actually going to post a vinegar bath gone wrong. Pitted my griddle severely!
