details! So much yes to this.
That is my mantra. Small details make big differences.
The other advantage is that most people don't have to change their current game. It's very easy to integrate into whatever your style is or whatever level you're at.

Professor that video was absolutely gold frankincense and myrrh. That detail alone probably shaved off a couple years of guard retention skill development. A sincere thank you! Please post on TH-cam if you are ever doing a seminar in Los Angeles. I’m definitely attending. 👊🏽 🤙🏽

Would love to see some no gi guard retention. Ive learned that a cross collar grip can be a strong tool to retain guard but im curious to what other options (if any) are similar in no gi. Great video, thanks for the detail!

Thank you for the hip swivel detail, Jon. On that same note, how should I protect my elbow knee space against the one arm throw? When big people yank my leg out, I feel so powerless and I do not have enough time to circle my foot outside their forearm to stop the throw.

I think when they do a farm arm throw in pretty quick about jumping my hip over and I usually frame their leg instead of shoulder. I’ll try to make a video on it soon. Thanks!

Professor, is there anything different that you do for no gi guard retention? If so, please make a video on that. 👍🏼😊

Great work. I'd like to know if you can do a video about when the guy control you on side control but on tripod with lot of pressure and you can't shrimp or turn towards him. Thx

Is the hip frame supposed to be on the hip or the top of the legs? It feels like framing the hip has no power but pushing your knees is more powerful.

Does shrimping to change the angle of the hips generally pull the knees too far out of position to be useful in this situation? I feel like that is my natural reaction, and the movement feels powerful, but I rarely successfully recover guard after this point.

Yeah I try to avoid shrimping when I can because it is often opening up your elbow knee space, it’s a really late stage defense option like if they are almost fully in side already.

What if you’re unable to reach the bicep with your foot. I’ve had it where the dudes grip is strong enough to prevent my foot from going into his bicep.

Often if you can’t go under and in to the bicep then to try to lasso over top of their grip can be easier, it’s hard to say without seeing it, also if you don’t frame on shoulder well early it can make it harder to get the movement to get foot in bicep. Also it could be if your hip isn’t turned in enough you can’t get it in which is why it’s so important to pre angle your hip towards them.

Years wasted trying to get those lazos with a flat hip.
