  • Cynthia Yeh, principal percussion of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, offers this tribute to her teacher Alan Abel, who passed away April 25 from COVID-19, as well as to all loved ones who have been lost during the pandemic. She hopes listeners may find some solace in her performance of Mark Glentworth’s "Blues for Gilbert" (2004).

Thank you, Cynthia. I envy you and all musicians for your ability to channel grief (or joy)
through your music. But thank you for sharing with the rest of us. I've sat in the terrace since it was created and try to feel a part of your magnificent orchestra! Thank you all. Kay

So beautiful. Such a perfect tribute to your teacher. Loved the cat meowing in the background.

This video made me remember just what a beautiful instrument the vibraphone really is. If only more people played it like you did here. Thank you for a great video. Your have a great sound and a great command of the instrument. Your dynamics were fantastic. Thank you for this. This is one I will not soon forget.

Thank you, Cynthia, and thank you to your cat. I weep when the PBS Newshour tells of those we have lost to the pandemic; and now I weep with your beautiful tribute to your teacher. Let us live too in tribute.

I love how you played this. The dynamics and the general flow of the music are absolutely beautiful. My violin teacher actually sent this to me because she knows I’m a percussionist as well.
When I was in elementary school, I used to look at performances and say, “hey, how hard could that be?” Now, I genuinely appreciate music like this. It must have taken a lot of practice to be able to play with four mallets. I still have trouble holding them right 😅.
This is stunning! It conveys the sadness of losing someone but also provides hope in the end, like saying “it’s going to be okay.”
This has made my day. No, it’s made my quarantine. Keep playing like you do!

Cinthia, tive a grande satisfação de conhecer a orquestra sinfônica de Chicago ano passado.
Tua performance reflete o maravilhoso trabalho de todos os músicos da orquestra. Parabéns!
    And, sorry, I am brasileiro.
