Ahaha I know that pain, mine kicked back just like it! But then I swapped out the points ignition to electronic and she doesn't do it any more....thank god! So I reckon your timing is off as mine was.
Yup standard procedure there. They will bite you. Sometimes my Pursang will do that, and then you can kick it for an hour and it won't crank because IT DOESN'T WANT TO. Come back after walking away from it for a while and it fires right up. Pursang, means thoroughbred. Sometimes finicky. I built a gas engine roller starter. Helps when it's acting cold natured.

New bully owner here,the guy I bought it from told me to be carefull it kicks back! Now after seeing this I'm paranoid about starting it ,I can just imagine the pain 😯
That was bloody funny. How good is it when an XR600 kicks back and sends your knee into the bottom of the handlebars, then you get a bit gun shy going for the next attempt to get her started. Electric start is so boring.
Also done that engine on bench seeing if had compression pulled my thumb skin and pinched it when handle whipped back round into place thumb stuck by skin i was in pain till pulled it out.Once bit twice shy they say
Thanks just been informed that 2 our being shipped from spain to UK but says there in excellent condition and wont be cheap.So will carry on building my Bultaco trial bikes and see what future plays out

Running a Motoplat ignition on mine. But I also only bump start it with the compression release.
