Tennis ball + Basketball momentum // Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany

  • A very simple demonstration involving a tennis ball placed on top of a basketball and then dropped from a height. The result is a tennis ball that shoots up to 9 time the original height. Fun and easy to replicate and is a simple demonstration of the transfer of momentum through collisions between the two objects. What can replace the tennis ball to get better height? I'd love to have you try it yourself and report back your findings.

    Superb teacher. I love how you take an interaction that is relatively mundane, find an simple but exciting demonstration and then expand that principle to many real life examples. There's not one kid in these videos that is disengaged, amazing talent.

    The more an object deforms when hit the more energy it absorbs from being bounced (or bounced upon), as some energy goes into the deformation. These objects are known as being inelastic. The more elastic the collision, the greater the transfer of momentum. Try holding a billiard ball on top of the basket ball.

    Great activity to introduce my students to momentum. My basketball was flat so I did this with a tennis ball and a mini-super ball. Worked great! Can't wait to try it with the bouncy ball and the basketball. :) For distance learning, I had them complete it themselves with whatever they could find around the house & take a slow-mo video. Very fun! Can't wait to check out your other videos for more ideas. Thanks!

      Hi Jeff, there is another version that your students can try, a plastic cup about 1/3 filled with water and a pig pong ball floating on top, drop it and ping pong ball flies up. I will try and do a video on this in the future

    Hi. Congratulations for your very interesting demonstration. It seems to me that the height reached by the tennis ball would be about 9 times that for the basketball only if the latter is perfectly rigid( and assuming an infinite difference in the two masses). You see objects flying much higher and that is probably due to extra elastic deformation energy in the basketball which is transferred to the tennis ball after the former ball touches the ground.

    I bet there could be enough energy transfer to the tennis ball to put it through a ceiling tile if the basketball was dropped from 3/4 the height of the ceiling with the tennis ball on top of it.

    • @YeanyScience
      @YeanyScience  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      funny you should mention it as that is what happened to us. While the ball didn't put a hole in the ceiling tiles, it managed to lift a few of them up. A couple of them I had to reposition a ceiling tile with a long pole

    Im assuming this has to do with the relative elasticities of the two objects? I guess the optimal would be a very elastic high mass object on the bottom, and an inelastic low mass object on the top. Then again, I'm just a toaster, what do I know.

    • @UnknownUnknown-cb1fl
      @UnknownUnknown-cb1fl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I quite don't think so. The stuffed animal did not go any higher. I guess both need to be elastic but the upper body needs to be rigid (which I guess will result in the application of larger forces with same or less compression).

    • @YeanyScience
      @YeanyScience  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Budget?? good question. I make these videos on my own so I don't really have one. While my school district allows me to use my classroom as a location, this is not part of my teaching assignment. I make these videos after school using a few basic pieces of school equipment but most of the pieces are ones that I have built with my own money all on my own time. I do have commercials on some of my videos but it hasn't amounted to much. So why do I do it? I do it as a hobby and I enjoy the science

      Hi Alan, this is a demonstration that has been around for years. At one time it was sold commercially with 4 different sized superballs. I've always found it useful to get kids excited and thinking about variations that would be done. Interestingly enough, I've never thought to replace the basketball with something larger, some one suggested a large exercise ball in the comments, we'll have to try it.

    So my undergrad physics prof said that he did the math for what you get if you start with a superball, and stack ten more balls each massing twice of the one above. The bottommost ball would weigh about a ton, and he said that the superball would reach velocity, but would burn up from friction. That image stuck with me. (just checked some math now, and if a superball is 45 grams, then mass of the last one would only be 0.04608 metric tons, so he might have just made it up. Pity)

      Fair enough, if you are interested the Patreon website is: www.patreon.com/ . It's basically a website that lets others (like me) contribute to you directly, for example $2-$5/month. It's cheap from the patron's perspective, but multiplied by the number of patrons it can end up being significant income for you.
      A large percentage of TH-camrs use patreon for supplemental income because TH-cam ads don't provide a whole lot. I already contribute to about 7 other youtube content creators like yourself. I realize you already have a job, but it could be a cool way to bring in some extra cash you could put towards your homemade science projects! Probably need to run it by your administration though if you want to monetize.
      Have a good one!

    Hi Mr. Yeany. Sorry to be posting this publicly but I didn’t see a way to message you directly.
    My name is Susanne Sprague and I am writing today to ask for your permission to use a segment of this video in a project I am working on. We wish to use only a short clip of your video [timestamps 0:57 to 1:04 (no students are shown.)] We would like to include this 7-second clip in a formative assessment we are creating for a new commercial product, called Venture.
    Some background: Venture will be an online platform that will allow educators to build and easily deliver assessments to their students. We (Breakthrough Technologies) are currently developing a library of formative assessments aligned to NGSS to be available for use if the teacher feels it will assist in their classroom program. These are online only and will not be distributed outside of the online platform.
    If you grant us permission, we are also more than happy to cite you (and/or your TH-cam channel) as the author of this content. Please let me know if you would like more information on the company, the project, and/or the planned use of the video clip.
    Thank you, Susanne

    as much as i do believe you deserve far more fans, i wish you had of used the term "roughly" or something with equal meaning during the ball drop because while that would work in a vacuum, the tennis ball started about half a CM above the bottom of the basketball and clearly in your slowmo footage ended 3 CM past the basketball. of coarse i understand your vids are meant to be intellectually accessible but it just bugged me. still love your work

    • @YeanyScience
      @YeanyScience  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robin, that shot bugs me as well, I would say that was a poor shot of the dropping, we have done this thousands of times over the years and if the small ball is not sitting on top of the basket ball it is the poor release of the person dropping it, not due to the air resistance. If you try it yourself will see on a good release they will stay together.
