      Well I own one and I can say it's a fun gun , but yeah it's not my first choice for a night stand gun, but that being said if it's all I had i feel it would do the job . It would definitely not be my last choice of all my firearms either. But I got it more for fun . It's a blast to shoot. Also it's a great training tool for new shooters , with the chamber adapters . You can start then off with 22lr work them up through the power scales (also 32acp, 32 short and long, 32 h&r , 380 , 38sp, 9mm ,and of course 45colt and 410). Starting a new shooting off with heavy recoil rounds can be off putting , so starting them with 22lr can ease their never a bit . So with the chamber adapters I think it really has some uses.

    I cannot adequately express how pleasing it is to see someone who can not only use the word "archetype" correctly (or at all for that matter), but who also properly runs the slide of a pump action shotgun during recoil.

      And the reason it is "proper"?

    • @seatedliberty
      @seatedliberty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      By using the recoil of the shotgun to initiate retraction of the slide, and pushing the slide back into battery with counter recoil, he is ready to fire as soon as his sight is back on target as opposed to most people (at least what I have witnessed) who wait until the shotgun has finished recoiling and then work the slide to chamber another round. "Proper" in this case is synonymous with "most efficient".

    I figured out why I love Paul's channel so much. He reminds me of my dad.
    When the 9mm got super popular because of gangster rap music the neighbor boy kept talking it up so dad devised an experiment.
    He took grandma's broken cement Deer lawn ornament. Put the 9mm cylinder in his Ruger blackhawk and took a couple chips out of it. He borrowed Grandpa's colt 1911 and made huge divots. Then put the .357 cylinder back in the blackhawk and cracked the statue.
    After that he was having so much fun busting Timmy's illusions of 9mm power he grabbed his Springfield 30'06. Went up on the roof and took a 150 yard shot at the undamaged half of the statue and shattered it to 6 pieces.

      Check out Buffalo Bore's brand new 180 grain *JHP* - YES, ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY GRAIN JACKETED HOLLOW POINT! - load. Now that is hot! Realistically, it should do 1300-1325 fps from a 4" revolver.

    • @danmartin3183
      @danmartin3183 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I like Buffalo Bore a lot. I have to pull a Paul-ism here and say that hyper-velocity (Is there such a thing?) .357 Magnum ammunition can be a bit much, especially in a 4 inch revolver. I have no problem using it my .357 rifles, in fact, it is ideal. I can find the Remington Green & White on sale at my local Wal-Mart for $46.00 for 100 rounds. The Buffalo Bore is usually $30+ for 20 rounds. At the end of the day, that Remington .357 Magnum Green & White box 125 grain SJHP load gets my vote for best bang for the buck. YMMV and I am not an expert.

    • @georgejohnsmith
      @georgejohnsmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Daniel Martin. I agree with everything you wrote. The Remington 125 grain JHP ammo is a tried and rightfully popular one. I just want to invite you for a thrill. Look at these numbers of the BB 180 grain JHP load:
      ➤ 1,258 fps -- S&W model 66-4, 2.5-inch
      ➤ 1,351 fps -- S&W model 65-5, 3-inch
      ➤ 1,356 fps -- S&W Mt. Gun, 4-inch
      ➤ 1,501 fps -- Ruger GP 100, 6-inch
      ➤ 1,840 fps -- Marlin 1894, 18-inch
      The nerve of Tim Sundles! These loads are certainly close to, if not above 50,000 psi, yet he has got the balls to write down that *"This ammo is no harder on your gun than any other normal 357 ammo."* Obviously he has forgotten what "any other normal 357 ammo" includes.

    I said it before, and I'll say it again:
    I can hit a target from 7 yards, I don't need it to spread out, at 25 yards hitting a moving target while your adrenalin is pumping, the spread DOES increase your hit probability
    Not for Paul, but for everyone else.
    And at further ranges I couldn't make accurate shots anyway.
    Now does this make the judge a good option?
    No, it's big, heavy and has a low capacity
    And the benefit it gives fades away if you learn to shoot well (hence why Paul hates it)

    • @bmx7596
      @bmx7596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The advantage is inside a home. Multiple wound cavities per one trigger pull. Buckshot is very accurate and hits very hard out of Judge

  • @bmx7596
    @bmx7596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Most everyone misses the entire point with the Judge 000 buck. It's the only defensive handgun that can deliver 5 pellets per trigger pull, each with the potential to kill by itself. Multiple cavities and splinter channels of wounds per trigger pull. THAT'S the advantage, not spread, not total power. It's being able to pull that trigger once and increase you chances of a vital hit by 500%. that's nothing to sneeze at. Just the fact that you said the .357 did "arguably" more damage than the 000 buck is damn impressive when you consider the 000 buck has five individual paths to kill. Tight group yes, but organs and blood vessels are packed tight also. Also, FYI, the Winchester super slugs do 1440fps out of the Judge.

    I have never been in a gunfight, but I have shot a lot of big game over my 50+ years of hunting. Every single shot was unique to that time, place and conditions at the time. I would think that every defensive shooting would also be unique to the time place and conditions at the time. The Taurus Judge is more of a novelty firearm in my opinion than not. Yeah, it's useful for maybe dispatching the odd snake in the course of your workday. I will say I don't hold Taurus guns in very high regard, so take my observations for what it is and is not.

    I think I managed to find some info padded over by that study. One, the "rifle" category included ALL centerfire rifles that weren't shotguns, but covered around %25 fewer cases than the .45 and 9mm data points, if I recall correctly.
    This means that we have no way of knowing from the video's graph which rifles were actually used, and from what distance. And since they they have less samples, the data is even MORE hazy than the ones on rifles. (I personally like rifles more than pistols, because, as a Canadian, I can only take the former into the woods for hunting and plinking, and I like having a stock and long barrel.)
    Also, while the video showing the study and some cool graphs claimed that the diferences between the best handguns were insignificant, with some 200 plus cases each for most popular calibers, if I recall my stats class correctly, a change of so much as %1 was statistically significant, and the article linked did not draw the conclusion the video did.
    Also, the study brought up that most of the 9mm ammo used was ball, not hollow point, which of course skewed the results.
    Also the video claimed that those Casul revolvers might be as good a stopper as a rifle, but I imagine joe average would have a hard time hitting anything with such a cannon.
    As a Canadian, all I'd be shooting with a pistol is targets at a range, so I'll just go with a .45, so I my ego swells with the barrel climb.

    Mr. Harrell that was another well though and fair, real world test about shotshell pistols, ie the Taurus Judge et al. I agree that what may be accomplished with the Judge, a conventional revolver can generally do better.
    I say this owning a S&W Governor with the caveat that I like the Governor for its ability to utilize both the .45 Colt and .45 acp cartridge. It only uses 2 1/2 inch .410 shotshells, therefore limiting the capacity of 000 buckshot to four pellets. Based on your test, the 000 buckshot nay be sufficient for an intruder wearing a tee shirt at seven yards but for my part, I will use .45 Colt or .45 acp for self defense. It does shoot the aforementioned cartridges accurately.

  • @reedkellner6447
    @reedkellner6447 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I appreciate what you said, Paul, about not using the results of studies to prove a point that their parameters do not support. However, I am thinking of buying a judge based on something I learned from one of your videos. You explored different options for shooting from underneath the covers of a bed. It appeared as though a revolver was a good option. Also, I don't know about everyone else's houses, perhaps my house is very modest compared to some viewers, but in mine, if I'm indoors, I'm very rarely going to shoot anyone from 7 yards away. Under 4 yards would probably more likely if my assailant was inside my home. And for that purpose, it seems like the rapid spread I would get with #4 buck--and indeed, lower velocity, and subsequently decreased likelihood of over penetration compared to a full size shotgun--would be preferable in that circumstance: indoors, possibly from bed, and at a distance of less than 4 yards.

    I know you're down on the Judge, but it really is a tremendous fishing aid ... see you clip a rope or chain to the trigger guard and toss it over the side of your boat and let it sink to the bottom, it does a tremendous job of keeping your boat from drifting all that much. VERY useful.
    Oh and as others have said, I'm most looking forward to your video on the animal ghost's study.

    Greetings from NC Paul. It is obvious how you feel about the judge, but Smith & Wesson makes a revolver called the Governor which holds six rounds as opposed to five in the judge. It also chambers 2.5 in .410 shells, .45 LC, AND .45 ACP. I found that interesting and thought you might too. Thanks and God bless.

    I have a Bond Arms "Snake Slayer" two shot derringer that I keep as a car gun. When I got it, I decided early on that it would be a belly gun if I had to use it to defend against a car jacker. This video goes a long way toward supporting that idea. I'd rather rip open a car jacker's guts than bruise his ribs.

    I'm amazed that anyone could think a 410 revolver could emulate a 12 Bore I mean go figure? Barrel length for one. I started carrying a Star PD as my first carry gun and then at some point saw the velocity and power difference between a 5" 1911 and a PD. The PD loses a lot. I originally wanted a 44 Spl and couldn't find one but later got a Rossi 44 Spl and I experimented with shot capsules. I found I could put 14 lead round balls of 4.5 mm or 177 in the capsule. At one metre you could put all 14 pellets on the head. At five metres the pattern would cover the entire target...not very effective. I suspect at an inch fired into the throat it might work... The spread is caused by the rifling. Now the Taurus Judge we had as a range gun as far as I can recall was smooth bore which would help when using 410 but not 45 Long Colt. But are they all smooth bore or rifled?
    The Taurus and Governor for that matter are mess about plinkers as far as I am concerned.

    Paul thanks very much for another great video.. just a thought but would you ever consider doing a video of the Judge. VS. Ducktown 45LC/410 Derringer "The original pocket canon"
    aka Cobray/Lainad/FMJ
    The reason i would think its a more fair comparison than anything else is
    There's a single shot version with the 3inch chamber and barrel as well as the 2.&1/2 chamber and barrel its probably the most similar thing to the Judge ..actually there's a 5shot pepper box version as well... well just a thought but anyway it's always a pleasure to see your videos thank's for your time I really appreciate it very much

    People assign miraculous qualities to defend their purchase. I own a S&W Governor. I love that gun but let's be honest, it's a range queen. It gets pulled out when I want to bring something different and interesting to show off or stand out. I like throwing different loads out of it and with slugs, it's essentially my "magnum" until I can afford to buy a magnum.
    But if some idiot ever decides to enter my home without my permission they're gonna get Federal HSTs out of my Glock, 00 out of my Mossberg, or 50 grain hollow points out of my AR-15.

    I think that the real benefit of the Taurus Judge, is when it's used for critter control. Like dispatching snakes and such. As for defending against two legged threats, I'd much rather have a conventional handgun, weather that be a revolver or auto doesn't really matter. My humble opinion.

    I like Paul's stuff, but.... 4 parts and no discussion of what is going on in most judge fans minds. Scenario:
    judge loaded with 2 or 3 .410 AP rounds and 2 or three .45 or .410 slugs...
    Intruder comes through door or window...
    Blam(AP), Blam(AP)........Blam(AP)....................Bang(.45)......Bang(45)
    2 slow down shots 1 focused shot 2 very focused shots
    Or something like that. Prob. fine with single intruder. Rather have my Glock 23 .40 cal. w/ 22 rnd mag. (should be good for at least 6-7 badies....If I need more than that I'm prob screwed anyway.) Oh yea... there's always the Mosburg 500 TAC, the BFR .454 (even w/ a close head miss, the shock will likely kill them) and the 2.25 inch mountain rifle... it's basically a canon. That should do it. If all else fails, there's the Ruger .22 Charger w/ 15 rnd. mag. Looking for a German NebelWerfer to round out the home defense. th-cam.com/video/FqHuOMFZKCo/w-d-xo.html

    Hands down one of your best videos to date paul. I love how you will go out of your way to smash a troll response to the judge videos. As you put perfectly people attribute god like qualities to that gun and what you didn't say for obvious reasons is anyone who thinks in that manner is a full blown idiot. Would I want to get shot with any gun? No but if I was forced to choose I'd chance the judge with any crazy hyper ammo over a full length shotgun with any conventional 12ga or .410 round any day of the week. As always very informative and expertly explained with that tinge of well deserved bias that only comes from knowing what your talking about and having seen how bullets act under real life conditions. Forever subbed and always waiting patiently for the next video all the while hoping its a longer one(10min+).

    I own a tourist judge And I bought it after watching his videos on it but I never did have any delusions about what the gun could do or what it was for... I have to mention I would like to see him try shooting some of these specialty defense ammo that they have for the judge because I have these horny critical defense rounds that have a 41 caliber FTX Howell tip and 235 caliber lead balls and each shot.... It's from some of the videos I've watched the defense ammo performs way better than most of the .410 gauge buckshot and slugs

    Thanks for another great video!
    Do you remember the velocity rating of your 12-gauge ammunition? When I look online at what I think you were using, they are rated for 1325 fps. That's about what you found, so if I'm looking at the right stuff, the box rating is fairly accurate.
    If I'm looking at the right stuff from Federal, the #4 shot .410 gauge ammunition is supposed to be 950 fps and the 000 buck .410 gauge ammunition is supposed to be 850 fps. Your numbers were 100 fps below theirs for the 000 buck round out of the gun that I would expect them to use in rating that ammunition. I'd be curious what velocities of these would be from a regular-sized .410 gauge shotgun. I'd be curious whether these "personal defense" .410 gauge shotgun rounds would be effective from any firearm against the meat target.
    While we're on the topic of firearms that may seem like the latest fad and shoot shotgun ammunition, I'd be curious about your thoughts on the Mossberg Shockwave. I have one in 12 gauge and would probably choose 2.75" shells with nine 00 buck pellets at a rated velocity of 1150 fps as my "go to" self-defense round. I wonder how close to the 1150 fps speed these pellets travel when coming from the 14.25 inch barrel. Mine usually patterns about two to four inches at seven to eight yards. If I do my part in a self-defense scenario, that's 450 grains of lead hitting an attacker in the chest. Even if the velocity is only 1050 to 1100 fps, that's a good amount of energy hitting someone. I find the Shockwave to be easy to control with up to nine 00 buck pellets at up to 1200 fps. I can control the Shockwave with more powerful rounds, but that's the load that seems to be the sweet spot for me. I enjoy the 2.25" inch rounds that shoot 6 pellets of 00 buck shot, but those don't cycle as well and don't have an adapter. I like the 1.75" shells as well, and they work well enough with an adapter. I would just feel better not relying on the adapter to cycle my shells in a self-defense scenario. I suspect that the 1.75" shells with the #4 and #1 buck shot pellets would be effective as well.

    Judge not the Judge, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge the Judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. But measurements come with a caveat that not all chronographs don't always agree with one another and certain environmental factors such as elevation and ambient temperature can effect chronograph results.
