I was addicted to drugs when I got pregnant. She was in nicu, I went in from 6am to 9pm every day. The nurses actually loved seeing me there. I learned so much from them. @@nasramohamed seriously, you put that so well. “When the world is telling you you’re a monster and aren’t fit to be a parent”
When I went in to give birth, the nurses and doctors were quite rude to me. They assumed my daughter was going to be really unwell and that I had been lying about what I’d been on. But I truly tried to keep her as protected in the womb as much as I could. When the nurses saw me in the nicu every day, all day and stone cold sober. And asking everything about my child, about bathing, all stuff a new mum hasn’t a clue about.i was there more than any other parent. And I don’t say that in anyway boastful but I also knew what my addict brain would want, for me to sabotage it all. She was so tiny and helpless and thank you God she was not sick at all!!! That’s when I started to get a little respect in the hospital. Yes I’m drug addict, but I’m not a bad person. Thank you guys for being so nice, I wasn’t expecting it at all

I'm a physician in the US. During my residency training I did a rotation in the NICU. I couldn't believe the number of babies that never had visitors. Most of them were born to drug addicted parents and/or had congenital abnormalities and were complicated to care for. The NICU nurses are angels. They are literally at the bedside every moment during their shifts and know every detail about their patients.

Small things to make a difference:
Whenever I have to go into the hospital I stop at the gift shop and buy their cheapest bouquet, usually $12. Then I ask the cashier to give it to the nurses / whoever, and have them give it to a patient who hasn't had any visitors.
The gift shop employees know me now, even ones I hadn't met have heard about me, and they're all thrilled, tell me the nurses love it, and most of all the patients.
It's an easy way to spread some kindness.

She was absolutely adorable ,21 years later I still think about her and hope her life turned out better.

Knew a girl who was fostered by a woman as a baby, she adopted and fostered several children over the years(in this country you couldn't legally adopt a child that had parents of a different religion to your own so that's why some were fostered rather than adopted). Anyways she had a big wonderful family she was well known and respected. Yet this one girl came from two drug addict parents who died from overdoses. Even though she never knew her history she still did poorly in school and couldn't settle, got caught up in the wrong crowd and did exactly the same behaviour of her birth parents(drug abuse alcoholic unemployed). My niece was premature and had to be in the NICU for a few weeks. We were there constantly. If her parents needed a break to go shower or eat than me or another family member was right there even if we had to wait in the waiting room. Someone was there constantly in case something went wrong or just to hold her little hand and talk to her. I feel so bad for the babies that have nobody to care about them. The NICU staff really are angels.

When I was a teen, I spent a lot of time in children’s hospital LA. Most of the kids (patients) had only 1 visitor, their social workers. The other people that came and gone were the nurses and doctors. It was a very lonely place even thought there were toys and art and all kinds of fun games and movie, those kids were longing for love and acceptance.

There is something especially sick about the foster care system in that it proudly promotes that the “goal” (of foster care) is “reunification”. Which is also silly because not all kids have someone to re-unite with anyway. The goal should be to help the child find a loving home.
As someone who was adopted into a loving home, it gives me a sense of overwhelming pride when someone gets adopted by someone who loves them. I wish this family nothing but the absolute best - a long, joyful, comfortable life together. True family is where unconditional love grows!!
