I truly don’t understand why the commenters are shipping this couple. Xiang Liu/FangFeng Bei is handsome granted that but he’s not the man for her. His acts of cruelty aren’t love. He’s the silver haired version of Lestat sucking on her blood for healing never mind that she hurts when he does it. He broke the tree limb she was on which caused her to break her leg bc he was losing her attention and acted out of pettiness and spite. He dumped her by the ocean and she had to fend for herself and find her own way home. He knew her spirit power was low and she was afraid bc she didn’t know how to get home while pleading with him, he walked away (the modern day angry man dumping his date on a dangerous dark road and telling her “B--h, see ya way home”, and speeds off). His jealousy knows no bounds and he’s so unpredictable and hurtful. He would rather die first than tell Xiao Yao he loves her…the type who would hide his love deep but yet expect the other to know of his feelings. Jing on the other hand, is loyal. He’s there for her, he puts her first above everything, so he wouldn’t be afraid to tell her he loves her, and he would never take a concubine(s). This is the man she needs. A man who would protect her and put her first above all things…..the kind of man she told her grandfather she wants in her life. Yes, he boring compared to Xiang Liu but Jing would never hurt her, he’s gentle towards her but most importantly, he would be the man she can lean on and rely on. A man who would never be far away from her, who would always be standing next to her, who would always find her and never abandon her physically or emotionally. Unfortunately, these are traits that Xiang Liu doesn’t have or will ever have no matter what new transformation he takes on as he truly doesn’t know how to love a woman. Xiao Yao’s cousin/brother, Qiang Xiang is all about gaining power and acquiring the throne. That’s what’s first for him…his ambitions, Xiao Yao would always be second, which would be in her eyes abandonment. Then he would marry other wives to gain political favours or more power. He would put all his energy into governing as Emperor rather than loving a woman. So he wouldn’t make Xiao Yao happy. Fenglong is no different than Xuan as he’s ambitious as well. Both two peas in the same pod. Each other’s ying and yang.

He would never let XY know he did any of these things for her because he knew they could never be together. He taught her archery because he saw she had no way to defend herself, and crafted a special bow for her that took 30 years. But he never told her the reason why, because he knew they couldn't be together. So he resolved to take care of her firsthand, but also at arms' length. It's wrong to say he doesn't know how to love a woman when his love is the purest, most self sacrifical. In the actor's words, XL expresses the warmest love in the coldest way. At the core of XL, he is a demon who grew up knowing no love, no kindness, no warmth - he knew only violence and hate and cruelty. It's not surprising how he treated XY at first because that's literally how he treated everyone. He changed entirely through his love for XY. Meanwhile, Jing kept flirting with her even though he had a FIANCEE waiting for him at home that he hadn't taken care of and literally told her to wait for him for FIFTEEN YEARS because he was worried other men would snatch her up while he settled his business. His curiosity of why both she and Shiqi were hiding their identities peaked his interest but he still knew she was a woman in disguise as a man but not why. He fell in love with her when she told him of her traumatic childhood but he continued to use her blood to heal himself even when he knew it caused her pain, he broke the tree limb that caused her to break her leg, he left her on the beach and walked away after pleading with him about her fear of monsters and not knowing her way home. His turning his back on her and walking away from her was the worst cruel act of abandonment from him. So XL abandonment of Xiao Yao on the beach because of pettiness is no way in comparison to Shiqi disappearing due to fear and not having Wen Xiaoliu’s back. As to not knowing love, kindness, and warmth, XL had that from FangFeng Bei’s mother so he knew what love, kindness and warmth were as he got it and experienced it unselfishly from a mother to a son. Love shouldn’t hurt the one you profess to love. It should be given unconditionally and freely without anything attached. It should be honest and expressed honestly and freely. Xiao Yao suffered a lot (like Jing) and she distrusts everything and everyone because they want something from her except Jing. Jing is honest with her as he doesn’t hide anything from her so she feels safe around him, and is comfortable, relaxed and carefree around him. So she’s able to return his love freely, honestly and unconditionally. XL has different sides to him…hidden sides which would never love her freely, honestly or unconditionally. She would never know the true Xiang Liu or his true face or his demon form. This is why Xiao Yao never fell in love with him as either Xiang Liu or FangFeng Bei. Jing never loved his fiancée..he didn’t choose her as it seems to be an arrangement done between the families. He may be the Master of his fox clan and makes business and clan decisions and such on his own but he had no say in his future marriage especially if there’s a parent(s) or grandparents alive who make those important decisions. I don’t think Jing is flirting with her as he’s trying to be with her as much as he can while doing all that he can to cancel his engagement amicably. He will never marry that fiancée or be forced into marrying her. He will never make Xiao Yao his second wife or concubine as suggested by the Grand Madam who is unaware of Xiao Yao’s identity. With no spiritual power left to get them both out alive or to create some protective shield from that fire formation created by the 2 Uncles and their man servant, Jing chooses to die with her and for her while protecting her tightly within his arms from the flames and the heat. That’s the ultimate self sacrifice there…giving absolute all of his love, his power, and his life…to her. He didn’t commit suicide out of grief. What Jing did was based on his deep unwavering love for Xiao Yao. If you think about it, XL has the poisonous bug within his heart. He was already in love with her long before he agreed to take that bug in his heart. The old man told him he had nine lives but one heart. If he took that bug and gave his heart, he cannot take it back…meaning his heart, ie his love. He will feel her pain. She dies, he will die. The pain, death and love are not reciprocal. Perhaps it’s the cynic in me that believes he has to do all he can to keep her alive because he will die if she dies. Death from the poisonous bug killing him is not the same as dying with her as he doesn’t have that deep unforgettable heartbreak love. So I may not be off the mark here. 🤔😏
