Finally! Someone acknowledging that Djokovic's dominance has come from his improvement in his serve. This interview is a gold mine of tennis/sport information. Thank you for posting this.
His dominance at this years AO (and maybe throughout the year) is due to gamblers paying off other players to lose to him. Unless the ITF, ATP, etc., give us a public record of all top 30 players' internet use and pay phone use all three months prior to the AO, they were likely paid off.
I think Novak is one of the smartest servers. Not a big serve but fast enough and well placed to elicit weak returns. You don't need to hit aces. Simply eliciting weak returns makes holding serve quite easy.
My way of praising: Why is this video free? All these years as a violinist....why haven't my teachers/professors never spoke about movement like this. So glad I am also a Sabalenka fan. Wouldn't have come across this video. I am also a violin teacher. Wow. So much knowledge to absorb here. Thank you so much.
100% agreed! I will actually watch this again and will take notes bc there’s lots of info there - info people usually don’t talk about or just don’t share...
OMFG I'm a trumpet player and while the tennis specifics don't really translate the approach 100% makes sense in that context. Was thinking exactly the same thing
Amazing interview!!!!!!!! I'm 7min in and it's probably the best breakdown or explanation on how a different perspective and the right coaching can MAKE THINGS HAPPEN! "The pressure reveals your preparation". Whoa.
Honestly I appreciate you guys sharing this knowledge with us all - just finished my 2nd watch, and I'm certain I'll be clicking back to reference parts of this for as long as it's publicly available - massive thanks!
Watching this video was like looking into a mirror for me. The only issue is, when you try to convince people that this is what they have to do, and this is how they have go about practicing improving in a way that makes it possible to execute consistently successfully under fatigue and match pressure that you trust with confidence, it can be psychologically confronting when taking a person outside their comfort zone even when it is the best thing for them if their goal is to build a winning tennis game.
very interesting insight .. unreal to think about how fast aryna turned things around to look nearly unbeatable on court rn .. one of the best comebacks in sports i know .. its s talent in itself to learn and produce in such a short time like she did .. i agree if she continues to trust the process and even improove more whos gonna beat her ? excited how the next few month will go and how other players will react to this version of aryna
Everything he said is so so spot on with respect to tennis (and sports in general) and getting better, especially regarding the mental battle of developing reliable quality. Tennis is about so much about repeatability and the percentages. It’s not about hitting crazy winners.
This man really knows his stuff and talks about the game at a deep, deep level. Great video. I always thought technique is everything and pressure exposes your technical weaknesses. This just reinforced that.
Jack - hopefully you know me from John Silk shows... I have watched tennis for a long time, but nothing hit me between the eyes about the game more than this stream! Thanks so much, Jack!
His knowledge and understanding of the sport, and its application in practice, is very impressive. Thank you both for the really interesting and highly informative insight in this interview.
I grew up as a baseball pitcher before switching to tennis. There was a marked difference between how natural the serve felt to me vs how awkward it looked for kids who had never thrown a ball before. Everyone should learn to throw a ball before really tackling the serve.
This is a great topic! Biomechanics are so important in tennis and it is something that should be taught at an early age and at the front of every lesson. I think that a lot of it has to do with having young tennis player play other sports. Especially throwing sports like softball/baseball and multi-directional movement sports like soccer and basketball.
05:20 What does he mean that " her left tossing arm, once she tosses it, is on the wrong side of the head?" Her tossing arm is on the left side of her head (the side closer to the net). That looks correct. It looks similar to Fed's tossing arm position at 6:00. Is he saying that her tossing arm should be more parallel to the baseline rather than towards the net? 🤔
No, he's saying that her left hand was coming down on the left hand side of her head/body, causing the body to rotate away from contact, rather than the hand dropping more directly straight down nearly on the right hand side of the head/middle of the body, so as to allow more Seesaw shoulder over shoulder rotation, as opposed to whipping around right to left with the shoulders .
I have a small question. Obviously, Aryna's internal rotators weren;t weak, but it was just that sh wasn't doing the movement. But is it same to say that strengthening your internal rotators may help in making the forehand movement more natural?
How good would Aryna be if she had coaches that knew what they were doing? 10 singles titles previously based on her old serve before the problems appeared last season.
It wasn't only that: she also suffers from mental breakdowns, no matter what this man says. People DO have mental weaknesses (Depression, Anxiety, High Blood Pressure, some sleep Deprivation, and more). This man is a dunce saying it's not mental.
Would like to get Gavin’s opinion on Zverev’s 2nd serve problems. IMO, it is reaching back too much with the serve arm similar to what we saw when Nishikori was having 2nd serve problems.
Use 2022 and 2024 videos to compare. Before, the right arm stayed down, then went to the side, then back to the trophy pose and the right leg was discoordinated. Now his arm is up immediately, 1 less motion and coordinated with the leg. Efficient and quick, weight transfer is better.

Grunting may be annoying to the casual spectator, but from the player side, it helps with exhaling and releasing tension in the body so that the player can accelerate through impact. I personally don't grunt very loud, but there are times while rallying (lets say cross court fh to fh or bh to bh) when I am in a flow state and I begin to grunt a bit and my shots feel free-er/better. If you don't believe me, give it a shot.
@@tribe_called_oh I doubt you take it as far as keeping screaming while your opponent is about to hit the ball... Why does she deserve all these extra advantages at the expense of the opponent? Maybe it'd help pitchers and bowlers in baseball and cricket if they would let it all out and scream at the batter? Because the Aussies do some v childish sledging already, we should all become so self-centered.
