  • I did not have a lot of time or energy for this week, so I stuck with some much needed plant updates and got a plant repotted. I forgot to update during the July garden tour, how the Windmill Palm planters were doing, so we had a look at those and then I moved on to getting the Pharoahs Mask Colocasia repotted. I also showed the repot I did off camera with my Caladium Lindenii / Xanthosoma Lindenii . I have a bad habit of butchering the pronunciation of that caladium, and I didn't even realize until editing that I was calling it the wrong plant. oops.

    Hey Jeff!
    OMG Turbo swimming was SO CUTE!!! The windmill palms look great! I planted Ctenanthe, Impatiens & Snapdragons in my windmill palm planter. That movie looks like there were magic mushrooms involved. Those Maui Gold Taro are AMAZING! These hot days make the tropicals so happy tho, so it makes it worth it to me. Running bamboo doesn’t like to be divided regularly if you want them to grow big. I divided a black bamboo every few years into a tiny bush. It’s best to plant them. I bet you that they’d grow really well near where the Washingtonia is. Then you’ll fill that cold spot. I think those Pharoahs Mask Taro have mosaic… but since it’s a weird variety, it’s not visible. Since it’s from Brian’s Botanicals, it’s a high likelihood unfortunately. All the issues you mentioned sound like the problems I have. Ilex opaca would be a really cool tree, or use a motion activated sprinkler to protect the hydrangea trees. Fire Light is a *gorgeous* variety!

      Haha! I did the exact same thing with my black bamboo! That's how I learned not to chop and divide too frequently. Woops! Went from having nice 15 ft tall canes to just getting a few tiny sprigs that come up sporadically in the spring.

    Those canary begonias against the white is stunning, I have not seen them up here (NJ) just plain green For deer: catmint-purple flowers all season, a perennial, and you can make a nice tea from leaves; sea holly - but it’s a biennial; Echinacea; Monarda ...all periennials. Pond? Eas for that space get a preformed pond, can put in ground or keep above ground and hide base with rocks or plants. The secret for no pump is to have a good ecosystem that’s oxygenated. For me the best is the water hyacinth because the roots get so long ( I trim them a couple times a season ) canna and papyrus along the edge, add goldfish to eat the mosquitos. It’s so workable ! Now i do a pond pot with less plants 🌿🌱🐡

    Garden looks amazing regardless of the storm mess...with the P.Mask. I have had mine 3 years now. she is in a clay pot inside of a cover pot filled 2-3 inches with water. Pebbles at the bottom of course. this method works great just incase you can not water. I am in zone 6a. in the winter she goes into my indoor pond bowl. she is huge and happy.

      So much water! Think they'd do wonderfully in bog gardens and along pond edges. Self watering containers help a lot with them 😊

    I'm trying out a new fertilizer, Dr. Earth Organic Tomato fertilizer, it is a 4-6-3 slow release that also has calcium and mycorrhizal fungi. Maybe it will be better than Osmocote, maybe not. Can't hurt to try, it wasn't expensive. We'll see how it goes with the container plants. I figure tomato fertilizer should work for the Brugmansia and perhaps the Hibiscus.

    We had 2 bad storms here in Michigan. Lost power for 12 hrs and many trees uprooted in the area. My sunflowers all got knocked over. I don't think I'll bother with growing them again.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Storms ruin everything! It's like no matter how things are growing, there's at least once big storm that rolls through each month and sets things back. Poor sunflowers! Maybe can try a shorter and more busy type next year? Those might be a little more stable.

  • @sunnyjozani8421
    @sunnyjozani8421 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The deer keep the pruning in check. lol. Have you thought of just growing the oleanders in the ground in the front yard? They do much better in the ground and I don't think deer will harm them. Most animals just avoid it like the plague (for good reason).

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I could put them in the ground! They aren't hardy here so they need to stay in pots or get planted and dug for winter. The ones from PW will likely go in the ground next year just grow them out, but ill have to dig them up and pot them for fall and winter. Stupid cold!

    I ordered a Colocasia Pharaoh's Mask this spring, it arrived in just ok condition. Then in June I saw them at my local nursery for a bit cheaper and bigger… hate when that happens. I didn’t know they like wet conditions, I’ll improve its potting conditions when I get back home

    Hi I'm new to your channel and growing. I was wondering what/which drip irrigation you started out with. Or recommend? I know alot is trial and error and we all start somewhere. I just love your videos. I'm learning so much. Thanks.

      Hello! Thank you! I generally just use whatever they have at Lowes or Home Depot. Sometimes I'll order supplies from DripDepot and Amazon. ... I will not be ordering hose from amazon again though. Not unless I've already tried the brand before. I want to say the parts from Lowes are made by Mister Landscape.

    • @krystaldukes3024
      @krystaldukes3024 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TropicalPlantParty Thank you for responding. I ordered some from Amazon as well, my home Depot didn't have any. I think I got the wrong size. It's real small in diameter, that's what I was wondering about, if you used 1/4 or 1/2 to go around to everything. My garden is small so it works but I think it may have to be bumped up to a bigger size. Thanks again.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use both sizes. The 1/2 inch goes into the water supply, and the 1/4 inch taps into that and goes into the pots with an emitter on the end. I posted a video a few weeks ago where I go through the process of setting up an area on drip that might be helpful. 😊

    Omg, Turbo is sooo cute! He must be keeping Toby young! The only plants that I found out deer don't eat are marigolds and asparagus ferns. Good luck! Don't know if they are ok for pets tho. My diplodenia that I put up on the crabapple stump is in full bloom! I love it so much! Your everything is beautiful as usual. Maybe try netting for the seedlings. I cover my chicks and hens over the winter w netting and stakes to hold it down. It's been working fabulously!
