Single pickup guitars are alot more interesting that people usually think, guitars such as the Malcom Young signature and Gibson JRs are a product of how many guitar players have believed that the reduced magnetic pull on the strings created by removing a pickup lets the strings resonate more giving a fuller and more sustained sound. It might only be a slight difference but it makes sense for the magnets of the pickups to effect the resonance of the strings.

Too funny... Tomo and I went to school together at Berklee in the 1980s. I've played with him a bunch of times, recitles, sessions, etc.... and I even still have a recording of one of my tunes that Tomo played on in the Berklee Studios.
Documenting a creative process like this is so important. But it's rare. There are millions of guitarists who never get past just learning their favourite songs. Some think that you have to be a great technical player to come up with guitar parts. Amongst those that do try to create, there's too much tired old stuff that's been done a million times before. Give young players some simple approaches, and we might see something new. I hope you do more of these.

Following Rhett's channel, ive gathered so many good nuggets of insight and wisdom into playing, composition, recording, gigging, etc. I've been playing for 15 years, but Rhett's music and videos have helped me out of my own musical ruts lately. I hope he realizes just how valuable the content that he's putting out really is!
You are blessed and gifted. I and my band are simple song writers with a very modest studio in the basement of an ancient textile mill. I live vicariously through you as I am very limited in the instruments I try to play, mostly guitar, lap steel, piano, synth, bass, Mando, etc...I cannot read music and feel crippled when I play. But you give me hope. And yes maybe an old dog can learn new tricks. I love playing music it is really healing. I recently got a hand pan drum in Dm and we jam for hours extemporaneously and to us it becomes a symphony, who knows maybe closer to a train wreck, but all in all there is no one thing on the planet better than the creative process. Where it comes from I do not know but it is very rewarding regardless of the fact that we rarely are allowed to play in a night club. Peace, Namaste and be well. Edward William Case

Emanuel b I can’t comment on squire, I’ve never owned one, but I have a gretsch streamliner, and it has the bigsby. Even though I never use trems, it looks awesome. I really recommend anything from that line. Mine had a lot of trouble staying in tune at first, but now that I’ve changed strings and played it, it’s perfect. The neck feels so good, and I’m in love with everything about it. But that’s just my opinion, hope this helps you out man
@@emanuelb1154 The quality of squier has come a long way. I just picked up a thinline tele and they now have solid shaft pots with set screw knobs. The switch feels nicer also and isn't the circuit board style that most overseas guitars come with. All I did was replace the pickguard with a tortoise shell for a unique look. I haven't played the gretsch so I can't compare but I think the tele would serve you well.
Love the track documentaries!!!! It's crazy to think about all the tone options you have in where you pick and how you pick! Every guitar has a built in flanger!

Those single channel ad30s are awesome amps. Also it's interesting playing through an amp like that with one channel and no frills... makes you use the guitar volume and modulate your playing a lot more

Tibor Tátrai, my favorite guitarist (worth looking up), at a workshop once suggested we practice playing a solo with just 4 notes. Then go down to 3, then 2 and then just 1. It is a brilliant exercise in the genre of limiting yourself. I have watched your channel for a while. I really like most things you post. But this was truly an amazing, transformative and inspirational video. Thank you.

What really makes it work is your ability to imagine different tones and musical lines. Knowing what you want and how to get it is a Huge part of getting anywhere at all. In other words, YOU, Rhett, are insanely versatile! This is one of the best, most interesting videos I've seen in a long time.
I’ve got 3 guitars with just a single pickup and they always force me to be more creative by taking away options. Same thing with sometimes just plugging straight in to a single channel amp that doesn’t have any reverb/tremolo. It’s a really great practice.

Killer demo, Rhett! Straight ahead guitar playing, nicely thought out and a great demo of track layering. We are living in software and equipment Nirvana, but too many of us get lost in the tech and forget the music. Old school players get a ton of tone out of cheap guitars and amps by understanding it all starts with music. Limitation creates opportunity!

I think these kind of videos are a nice change of pace. I don't think I'd be interested in seeing one every week, but maybe once a month or every other month would be a good pace for such videos. It's instructive to see your reasoning and thinking behind a track, the gear you're selecting, what you're going for, and some of that less quantifiable reasoning that goes on during the creative process.
Good one Rhett, I’m using these tactics often and I think this vid will be a good inspiration for anyone who feels like getting into composing / writing but not sure where to start, especially with limited gear.

The concept of this video was great and all, but the thing i've been looking for on TH-cam for a long time now (and never found!) is a decent guitarist/song writer who has the guts to show how they come up with the songs from start to finish... I just picked up a Gibson Les Paul Junior DC, with the single P90, 2 days ago with the main reason being to learn to expand my playing ability by limiting my options with a single guitar. So far, I think it’s really helped me out and has given me a better understanding on things like where you pick at in relation to the bridge and utilizing the tone and volume knobs more. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to expand their abilities.

1 pickup, 1 volume, 1 tone, 1 sense of dynamics when picking, and 1 ability to pick in more than one place on the string.
Also palm muting to tone down treble... Also changes dynamics and sustain.
My favourite bass equivalent to this theme is Freddie Washington and a Precision Bass.

I think these kind of videos are a nice change of pace. I don't think I'd be interested in seeing one every week, but maybe once a month or every other month would be a good pace for such videos. It's instructive to see your reasoning and thinking behind a track, the gear you're selecting, what you're going for, and some of that less quantifiable reasoning that goes on during the creative process.

The junior is my favorite guitar, and learning how to use one pickup to create multiple tones is my favorite part of it.

The concept of this video was great and all, but the thing i've been looking for on TH-cam for a long time now (and never found!) is a decent guitarist/song writer who has the guts to show how they come up with the songs from start to finish... This is the closest i've found... I know copyright protection for yourself is probably an issue, but would love to see a lot more like this if there's a way... Great job man, thank you! 👍👍👍

I just picked up a Gibson Les Paul Junior DC, with the single P90, 2 days ago with the main reason being to learn to expand my playing ability by limiting my options with a single guitar. So far, I think it’s really helped me out and has given me a better understanding on things like where you pick at in relation to the bridge and utilizing the tone and volume knobs more. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to expand their abilities.
