Indian Hindu monk, yogi and guru Paramahansa Yogananda, born January 5 Jan 1893 in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Who introduced millions of people to the teach meditation and Kriya Yoga through his organization Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) / Yogada. India's Satsang Society (YSS), and who lived his last 32 years in America. A chief disciple of the Bengali yoga guru Swami Sri Yukteswara Giri, he was sent by his clan to spread the teachings of yoga to the West, to prove unity between Eastern and Western religions, and to promote a balance between Western material growth and Indian spirituality. His lasting influence on the American yoga movement, and specifically the yoga culture of Los Angeles, has led him to be considered the "Father of Yoga in the West" by yoga experts.He published his book, Autobiography of a Yogi, in 1946; Having sold more than four million copies since its first publication, Harper's San Francisco listed it as one of the "100 Greatest Spiritual Books of the 20th century "Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs ordered 500 copies of the book for his own memorial, with each guest receiving a copy. The book has been regularly reprinted and is known as "the book that changed the lives of millions"
His continuing legacy around the world remains a leading figure in Western spirituality to the present day, with writers such as Philip Goldberg calling him "the best known and most beloved of all Indian spiritual teachers in the West... through his strength of character and perennial wisdom. He guided millions of people to overcome the obstacles to the liberation of the soul.
