  • Is the Witcher 1 worth playing today? In this video, I’ll give you the lowdown on Witcher 1 and make the case for why you should play this game.
Released 15 years ago, CDPR's first game, The Witcher, is a bit of a jankfest. But it's also got a lot of charm and heart that many modern RPGs lack. So yeah, I'd say the Witcher 1 is worth it.

Absolutely! Great atmosphere, RP elements, even the combat was so unique and much more book-accurate than the later games. Ridiculous character writing aside, I think this was the best witcher game. Somehow the world felt more distinctive as well.

I don't think I've seen anyone mention the funny tone of the game until now. Witcher 1 had such a charming funny tone and atmosphere (and the outdated animation and stiff voice acting were cherry on top) very reminiscent of early 2000s era Bioware games.. Witcher 1 feels very distinct when compare it to 2. 2 had its fair share of funny moments but in general, it took the tone 10x more serious and bloody from 1

It's definitely one of the games that I have played the most! @@Legendary_Bleu LOL no I'm not at all! I am 6 foot even and I weigh 190 lbs! I'm born and raised in Detroit; so I had to hide a lot of my nerd tendencies growing up! I finally became 100% comfortable with who I was and stoped hiding it during my later years in High School! I was captain of the debate team and track team at the same time! I was also in chess club during the day, but I would help my brothers and his friends plan their robberies at night! After the Burger King robbery drama (I was 17 at the time) I decided that the street life just wasn't for me! We never got caught, however about a year later one of my brothers (former) friends got in a police chase with his girlfriend in a stolen car! He fled and initially got away, but left his girlfriend in the car! She quickly told on him and once he got caught a couple of days later; he thought it to be a good idea to tell them about the robberies in order to get into less trouble! The look of pure heartbreak on my mom's face, as I could literally hear her tears hit the floor as the Cops marched us out the door in handcuffs; in a spectacle for the whole neighborhood to see, completly destroyed me as I tried my best to not match her mood and hold back my own tears! She put her house up for our bond, and spent the money she had just won in the lottery for us the best lawyer in Michigan (Brian Upshaw, I'll never forget that name)! He got our whole case dropped and we never even went to court! Our friend that snitched us out ended up being charged with the stolen car incident and the Burger King robbery as he put himself on the scene when he told! He got convicted of 27 years at age 19! After it was all over, I vowed to never see my mom in that much pain again; and after reading my paperwork and seeing that they wanted to take 20 years of my life (which was longer than I had been alive at that point) I realized that nothing was worth losing that much time of my life! These days I live in a nice Town in the middle of Wisconsin with my Fiancee who is a Chiropractor and my 5 year old little girl! I have a sneaker store and house flip, and my other half has her own practice! LOL so no I'm not overweight or a basement dweller! I just realized what I didn't want out of life, got lucky and found a girl who liked me because I was a nerd deep down inside just like her and worked hard at Oceanspray for a decade saving my money by staying out the streets and playing video games! My gamer tag is "Gods favorite" on all consoles; so if you see me online, maybe we'll run a match sometime😎

I remember back in 2007 I was playing mostly ARPGs (like Diablo and Titan Quest) for thousands of hours and I was tired of the constant pursuit of loot and wanted a more serious, story driven RPG. And just in time The Witcher 1 was released. To this day, this is one of my favorite games of ALL time! The moment I heard the opening few songs from the soundtrack and swung that longsword for the first time, I knew this will be something very, very special. And I was right.

The witcher 3 was my introduction to the franchise and thankfully the show made me feel right at home. Many people hate the show but I absolutely love it and is my favorite fantasy show at the moment. I still didn´t played the Witcher 3, but know already a lot from it and haven´t finished the Witcher 2, because of a pause that I needed, because it really pissed me of. But what about The Witcher 1? I played it at least 5 times (together it was 2 years) and I MUST LOVE it. Its AWESOME. For those who think that it is old, I say that some of the game mechanics you can upgrade just like the grafic up to 2K of the textures for the armors&weapons or 1K for buildings&skins&faces. The main story is Perfect, the side missions are worth your time. A ton of missions if you find them and manage to trigger them. :) Every single mission has its lesson. And the main story has a VERY VERY VERY DEEP Lesson. I'm still totally blown away by it. And my first playthrough was arround 10 years ago and I played a lot of games after W1 and no another one did make such a deep impression.

And despite it's age, for what it's worth, it still has it's dark witcher climate - which is the most important thing in RPG game.

It took me till my third time starting this game up to finally get a smallest clue about the sword combat - geez it's rough, even compared to DA: O!. I need to find a mod that minimises or totally removes the sword combat from the game I think - cos I really do want to play through the series but usually find the potion crafting and what not to be too much of an added complication for my Mass Effect loving brain (i know that is more my failing than the games).
I have started all 3 Witcher games at least twice but never got much further than a few hours in at most before getting too frustrated. Just started this game over today. Once you get over the stiff dialogues and ancient gameplay it's a really good game to this day. However a modern remake would really breathe some fresh air to this game!

This game is the only game I've ever played where I thought "This game would be better on a console" lol the combat is just too outdated and awkward.

I found out many people who found out witcher 3 boring is because they didn't know anything about the backround and really just you can't care about characters that way, so if anyone i know wants to play witcher 3 i just tell them to start from the first game.
For me witcher 1 is my fav, idk why, but that game's atmosphere immersed me like no game ever, not even morrowind or skyrim, ofc i'm a slav that could affect some aspects, there are not alot of slavic mithology themed games and i felt in love with witcher when i found out about it in 2019.

0:42 Where have I heard that one before....
Where the large "new" fandom only played the later game....
Half life, Persona, Bioshock, System shock, Elder scrolls, souls series,
The audio is a bit deep in this game. I can't think of another way to say it.
Interesting combat mechanic, but I think I can get used to it.

Random idea for a video you might make: What happens if you throw the fights in Witcher games? I can never bring myself to do it, which seems like it's right up your alley. Just a thought...

  • @michaelandreipalon359

Hmm, I'll think of it as the Mass Effect 1 of the trilogy. Rough to play and has some early installment weirdness, yes, but without it and its good old save bonus mechanic, the sequels just feel a little bit dry and confusing.
By the way, I chose to make the collectibles censored. Not sure if anyone would mind, but eh.
Not skipping it, I already know of it.
Will wait for you to review the second game.

It’s a slog if you’re trying to complete every sign board contract just because of the endless back and forth. The actual storyline driven stuff is pretty good and poker dice is lit.

I won't consider anyone a Witcher game fan if you haven't finished the trilogy and that is why CDPR instead of witcher 4 should remaster this game so console players can experience this game.

I literally had to get a mod increasing Geralts speed by 90% cause i walked around so much. The combat is the worst I've ever seen. Story wise it has yet to really convince me W1 was worth my time, nerves and suffering (I'm in the middle of Chapter 4)

After coming from witcher 3 to the original it wasn’t the graphical change that bother me it was the controls and attack method, I so wished there was a witcher 3 key and control button setup update without it I just feel it’s unplayable or doesn’t lend you to want to try to learn if playing for half an hour to kill time with a busy life style

I never got to play or read anything about the Witcher. A former colleague of mine peaked my interest.
    Watched the tv show.
    Was really confused but intrigued.
    Bought w1&2 ages ago.
    Never touched it.
    Tried.
Janky as hell. Combat is atrocious and half the time it doesn't responds to input xD getting geralt oneshotted before he draws his sword.. (so much per witcher reflex)
But you can bang random chick.. so 10/10

In my biased opinion, being a fan since the first installment of the series. I think it's a great game which whilst ahead of its time. It had been highly limited by budget, graphics and on occasions physics. But if you can over look that, the games alot of fun with a great story.

    • @VivekSharma-sn7hl

It was not really ahead of it's time even for 2007. Looks and felt outdated even then. But story and lore wise probably on the the best even better than 3rd one imo

Lol, I'm such an idiot, I swear. I just bought TW1 and 2 on Steam, thinking I could just play on controller, but I'm finding out that these games were not designed for gamepads and are therefor not supporting them. Ah well, it was only like 3 bucks so I'm not too bothered by it, but this is an instand deal breaker for me. I hate mnk, even though I mainly play on PC. I just prefer lying back on my couch with a controller and playing on the big screen

Haven't watched the vid yet but I can with clear conscious say that every witcher is worth playing, no matter the time ;)
Edit: Yeah, it's sad that most people skipped witcher 1 and 2. I started with 2, returned to 1 and ended with and the experience for me was far better knowing everything before. Especially liked the time last summer when me and my gf were stuck at home and I played and she watched cause she preferred that way. Also polish version the best :D
