The thing I love about Geoff's version is that he sings the tune from the perspective of four warriors facing their next battle, knowing that likely not all of them will survive. It adds to the emotional impact of the song remembering that in "The Hobbit" three of these dwarves don't survive the coming battle and deserve to be remembered. In addition to his outstanding voice, Geoff's arrangements and video production skills are impressive. You can't go wrong with anything on Geoff or VoicePlay's channels; choose what appeals to you. Geoff sounds great in whichever octaves he chooses to sing. All of the vocals (and instrumentation in his solo work) are his own. He only has guest singers with him in one of his early Christmas tunes and they are onscreen.
I had not heard the Dan Vasc version, so it was new to me. I understand that Ed Sheeran's was not seen in the movie but only played during the credits. Geoff's version was so much more emotional, it will always be my favorite. His voice is glorious in whatever register he sings. Especially in his lowest register he beats all the others (for me) because you can understand every word he is singing. He had just the right amount of sadness, resolution, and determination in this.
Thanks for this. I'm a huge Geoff fan. I've only heard a couple of performances from Vasc - I really enjoyed his voice, but I much prefer Geoff's arrangement. Geoff was a founding member of VoicePlay, along with Layne Stein, currently their beatboxer. They started as barbershop in high school, then developed into contemporary a cappella (and, in my opinion, have been one of the groups instrumental in shaping contemporary a cappella.) They're innovative and creative, and they are all about the music and the art, not the ego; I deeply appreciate that about them.
Geoff brought the dwarfs back in his newest release. The Song of Durin. Big fan of Geoff and his group VoicePlay. VoicePlay is independent. Do everything themselves. Arrangements, production, filming, editing, lighting, sets, costumes. They want everyone to have free access and sharing so no copy right problems.
Dan's voice is something special...but Geoff has the gift of filling every song he sings with so much emotion! You can feel how much he connects with each song. He LIVES his songs. Dan records them, technically and musically perfect. 🥰
Yes Geoff is part of Voiceplay, you don’t need to worry about copyright infringement with Geoff or Voiceplay both are independent artists/group. VP is like going into a rabbit hole of music, so they will you covered for whatever you tastes are. You can’t do wrong with almost any of their videos, if you want a few suggestions then look at the below they cover a wide range of songs as reflected in the below choices Creep Classic Chaos Dream On Hellfire Hoist the colours I can’t make you love me In the air tonight Nothing else matters Tennessee whisky Total esclipe of the heart The way you make me feel Vahalla calling Running up that hill Hide and Seek Lots more to pick from
Yes, Geoff is part of VoicePlay. Neither Geoff nor VoicePlay do copyright strikes, so you don't have to worry about that. They will copyright claim, but all you have to do is dispute it. On some occasions the original artists of their songs, or the lyrics authors, might claim it instead, and then you can't lift the claim. But you won't get strikes, they support reactors, as indepentent artists. ❤
I love both for different reasons as I do many versions of many songs... Geoff being an a Capella arranger adds that swag to his versions of even instrument accompanied songs (which he also provides like Dan) using a keyboard .Being an a Capella fan I find that really appealing. You may enjoy "Song of Durin" by Geoff the latest in his dwarf trilogy. Yes please, do react to Voiceplay you will surely find something you really enjoy in their 12+ year multi genre catalog. VP/Geoff will make sure any claims that may turn up are lifted if you dispute. *VP are called The Kings of Halloween for a reason as well.
Both Dan and Geoff are extremely talented voice artists. I enjoy both of their interpretations as much as I enjoy listening to Ed Sheeran sing the song too.
Love Dan's beautiful tone and lighter tone, and the stripped-down version allows the purity of his tone to shine even when he adds in his harmonies. Love it! But I am so much more drawn in by Geoff's uber-rich voice from his Geoffquaking bass all the way up to his tenor range which is just as glorious as his bass and baritone. He does his own instrumentation as well which is just a beautiful subtle addition. The creativity he adds with the costuming, lighting, and sets is so special. And he's a genius arranger! Not to mention he is as yummy to look at as he is to hear! This one is just so rich!!
Yes, Geoff is VoicePlay's bass singer and a founding member! He and VP are reactor-friendly--they may make a claim, because as I understand it that's kind of an automatic thing that distributors do? But other reactors have said that they are quick to respond to appeals and will not issue strikes or takedown notices. They have a thriving reactor ecosystem here on TH-cam and some of them have even been known to appear as a guest in reaction videos, so please don't be afraid to check them out. Liked and subscribed, looking forward to more!
You just reacted to my 2 favorite singers. I absolutely love Dan & Geoff. They both have amazing voices & vocal skills. I've listened to genres of music from Dan that I wouldn't normally listen too & loved them. Both of them are very expressive with their vocal skills & their faces. They draw you into whatever they're singing & make you feel the music. Love this & loved your reaction❤
You should listen to Geoff's version of The Sons of Durin and Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold. If you liked the Lion King Voiceplay just dropped Scar's villain song. I See Fire wasn't used in the main part of the movie but was sung as the credits rolled at the end. Every time I hear it, it makes me think of the fire fighters that fight the forest fires in California and other states out in Western US. Those fires are so big that they make their own weather. The fire itself is a dragon. Desolation was Smaug's other name.
He is definitely part of VoicePlay. Geoff and VoicePlay will not strike you, they don't have to. They like being the Theatre Kids of Acapella - each piece is like a mini-movie and if you had to cover their work, it wouldn't make them happy. They do everything themselves, they have no label - no one to answer to. Whoever (Geoff, Layne and Eli switch up) gets that project does the arranging, staging (Eli does the lighting, CGI, green screens, etc.), costuming, props, general makeup but for advanced make up and prosthetics they call in Rick Underwood and Renee Frenette, Layne the beatboxer and Tony who had been a baritone with VoicePlay but wanted to get into productions bought Pattycake Productions studio and are co-owners. Most of Geoff's and VoicePlay's video are done there. The pre-mix audio is done by whichever member is in charge of that video with the final mix by Ed Boyer who does that for the big acapella groups. They keep the creativity amongst themselves. Being Orlando based, they have all performed at Disney and/or Universal and as such, they know what audiences like to see. Eli (bald tenor) still does character voices for Disney and occasionally Disney will call in VoicePlay for a private showing for a special occasion.
I have subscribed to see more Geoff Castellucci and VoicePlay reactions. You can't go wrong with anything Geoff Castellucci or VoicePlay. "I See Fire" is #2 of a trilogy for Geoff, "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold" was #1 and he just released "Song of Durin". Enjoy the rabbit hole.
This has been a very interesting comparison. 🙂 I'm a HUGE fan of Tolkien, so I haven't watched "The Hobbit". I had enough of the movies with "The Lord of the Rings" 😅. Understand me, I'm not saying they weren't "good movies" in their own ways, but I just can't stand what they did to the books, and I totally skipped the Hobbit trilogy because to make THREE movies of it was too big a stretch to be good IMHO. 🙂 But I heard the original by Ed Sheeran, and Dan's version is closer to it, while (again IMHO) Geoff's is closer to the books. I'm definitely not saying one is better than the other: I simply HATE this kind of approach 🙂. They're different, VERY different, and each one brings different elements to the table. I like both, but this shouldn't be a criterion. Personal taste has nothing to do with one thing being "good": it just means one likes it or not, and it's a PERSONAL matter. 🙂 About Geoff. Yes, he's part of Voiceplay, where he sings bass (duh!). And BTW, you won't have any copyright strike from either one. If someone ELSE hits you with one on one of their videos, just inform them and it'll will be lifted. This is what I read from other reactors. They're "reactors friendly", for they know reactions will just increase the number of people that know them. Both Geoff and Voiceplay are 100% independent, fully funded via Patreon and whatever else that I don't remember, and have full control on what they do and their production. 🙂 Voiceplay are nicknamed "the Theatre Kids of a cappella", and righteously so. Geoff does not do a cappella in his solo channel, he said that if he wants to do something a cappella he'll do it with Voiceplay, but he sings all the vocal parts and plays all instruments, arranges, performs, films and edits it (except the final mix, which is usually done by Ed Boyer). Same for Voiceplay. Geoff's wife, Kathy, is the Production Manager for both. 🙂 See you next time!
Thank you! that was a great idea to present two versions. Both were great! If you want to discover Geoff, there are quite a few I like: Over the misty mountains, Shenandoah, 16 Tons ...you are in for a treat!
Jack's Lament from Geoff's solo channel would be great for you to react to now that it's Halloween season. Geoff and his VoicePlay bandmates are huge fans of Halloween. Hop over to Voiceplay's channel and watch their other videos from Nightmare Before Christmas... What's This, This is Halloween, Kidnap the Sandy Claws, and Oogie Boogie's Song.
I envy you being able to watch the 2:15 hour version of The Hobbit. What PJ gave us was unbearable. I hope you do investigate more Geoff and VoicePlay videos. Their whole catalog is excellent, so pick what appeals to you and give it a listen. Cheers!
There are a lot of fan edits out there of varying length. Some sticking to the book and others a little less strict but I think they all leave out the love triangle which was dire!
Some Geoff solos - Imagine (John Lennon) is beautiful, Big Iron (Marty Robbins), You Don't Mess Around with Jim (Jim Croce), Song of Durin (from a poem in Lord of the Rings), and one of my all time favorites is Unshaken (Red Dead Redemption 2). I did enjoy the comparison with both of them. Love Dan's Amazing Grace.
@JennReacts Geoff Castelluci's version is my all-time favorite version of this song. However, I do recommend checking out an artist by the name of Peter Hollens. You can find him on TH-cam. No he doesn't Copyright Strike. His Solo Version of "I See Fire" is INSANE. And I say "Solo" because he has more than one version on his channel where he has guest artists, but his Solo Version is my favorite version of his. Welcome to and enjoy the A Capella rabbit hole!
The problem is, TH-cam will strike even when the artist won't. It's all part of the algorithm they set forth. I am friends with many reactors and they get strikes all the time from doing reactions to reactor friendly artists. Home Free being a big one that causes strikes... when they are VERY friendly toward the reaction community.
@@johndeeregreen4592 I just assumed Home Free's content gets you strikes because they're actually being represented like Pentatonix, unlike everyone else.
@@johndeeregreen4592As l understand it, you can appeal these automatic strikes and then the artist is contacted and as far as l know it is VP & Geoffs policy to get the strike lifted.
Dan is talented - no denying. But his voice has a very forward nasal quality that I can’t stand. It’s not his fault or his skill.. but I just can’t listen to his voice. I am a huge fan of Geoff, however. I can listen to him all day.
Me too.I don't know who is Geoff but Dan's voice and "macho" style makes me skip the video every time i see his name..By the way THIS video is different and i even like his calm singing. But when he goes to higher notes-"Dan-macho" appears and this is what i can't listen.😂
Suddenly, there are all of these great male singers: Dan Vasc, Geoff Castellucci, Tommy Johansson, another metal singer, and Austin Brown, formerly from Home Free.
I like Geoff, but prefer Dan's voice. Thank you for this comparison. I personally wouldn't mind you doing reactions to Dan, even though you have seen the video before. He is just that good and I often find something in his videos that I had missed before.
To me, Dan and Geoff are different flavors; with both being very good at what they do. Interestingly, both are two of my favorite singers, and never would have imagined them being together in the same reaction.
They are both very talented and I like both versions. However, Dan is able to portray the story through just his voice and facial expressions and make us see the story and be part of it.
I don’t like comparing artists, they all have their own style of singing and it’s simply a matter of one’s personal taste who you like to listen to. Personally, my choice is always Dan. I love his voice in any genre.
What can't this man sing? He does metal, opera, pop, rock ,classic, folk any genre ! I prefer Dan's warm clear voice with which he captures the meaning of the song! Dan Vasc´s Version of "I See Fire" is the best ! Thank you for your reaction ! 😊
Dan Vasc My absolute favorite singer. What can I say? Well, I don't really like comparisons with Dan Vasc because he's always better. But Geoff around Dan did a great job.
Geoff is an excellent singer with an amazing range. But he tends to put always the deepest sounds into his arrangements and I find that artificial sometimes. Dan is also showing all he can, but for me it is more natural and emotionally more impactful.
