In the lore, the "horses" ridden by the Death Riders you saw in the video are about as much horses as the Space Marines are regular humans.
It is easier to shoot the rider off his mount than to score a killing hit on that thing, which is simply too angry to die and keeps charging at you. :-)
ypu can hit these with a heavy bolter round and they will keep charging for another couple hundred meters despite having no lungs heart or anything because these "horses" dont care
They don't even have hooves, they have claws so they can run on any terrain and absolutely tear up anything they trample

As Arch so pointedly stated about the Korps: Other planets raise Regiments. Not Krieg. Krieg raises armies.
There is a law that prohibits the Astra Militarum from ever deploying singular armies with combined armed forces, that's why they use regiment and work around their weaknesses and strengths.
This does not apply to Krieg. The Death Korps are so loyal, so fierce, so god-damn good at what they do, that they are exempt from this rule and are allowed to raise and deploy combined armed forces because not once, not even once, not even a single of their guardsmen have ever turned traitor willingly. Some have been forcefully corrupted, but never willingly and even when forcefully turned, they are incredibly resistant to the point they match the Sisters of Battle in the devotion and zealotry department.
I fucking love Kriegers.
And the funniest part? Many, many, many Space Marines chapters have a deep respect for them and some even have special doctrines whenever they have to fight alongside them, such as treating them with respect, coordinating with them, and even, shock of all shocks, assist them if possible for their goals are often aligned with whatever goal they have.

As a german I feel compelled to point out that "Korps" is pronounced like "core" (just like "corps" is in english)

@@TeaTime574 No its just the same as the Marine Corps, or a Navy Corpsman. Its the Korps (like the Afrika Korps from WW2) because it goes with Krieg, although the Krieg are about 90% WW1 French visually.

But that is probably due to the WW I.
In terms of their mentality, they are also partly German. But it seems to me more as if one had taken more influences from the post-war period and WWII. (In terms of self-hatred / shame for one's own story and forgiveness at all costs.
This massive dying for a hopeless fight also reminds me of the Wehrmacht and SS in the last months of WWII. (I don't know anything about the French and therefore I can't say whether they also have influences from them))
But I can also be mistaken, I don't know about the Warhammer lore.
I just stumbled upon Death Corps once and was interested in their story.

The story of Kreig is a great story. The Death Korps are hard AF.

Krieg teach their troop to wear their mask like a second skin and they do it to their horse to because they really love to use chemicals weapon like it going out of style. if you want to know more about the Death korp wacth arch video he did a hour and 14 min talking about them.
Isn't one of the reason is because they're actually just kids, around aged 14 to 16 making them child-soldiers and that the gas-masks is to hide that from other regiments?

The Death Korps are some of the only humans to willingly run into hand to hand combat with a space marine. I would argue they have the same steel balls as a space marine, they do not fear death.

This is the most accurate statement I've heard in ages. Also, I recommend the Ork video by the same creator 'Sodaz' called "Black Templar". Because orks iz best! (and also more Space Marines).

Of all the imperial guard, The Death Korps are the most feared. The basic rundown of their backstory is that they had a planet-wide civil war which ended in a nuclear holocaust. After living underground and still fighting, Kriegers were given a chance by the Imperium and now request to be sent to the worst warzones in the universe. Entire battalions will launch themselves at the enemy to die for the emperor or die trying. They're also masters of wars of attition, hence the ww1 aethetic. Also, the entrenching tool is kind of an inside joke among 40k fans in that Krieg marines don't use blades for melee, but shovels. That, and during the Herasy, a Krieg marine managed to kill an Astartes with one.
My favorites? The Orks. They run in headlong giving no fucks if they live or die like Kriegsman, but for them, it's all for fun. A galaxy full of war is just one big pub crawl for them. Baldemort has a whole 'Kronan the Kunnin'' series bout how they roll.
The planet broke before the gaurd did.
Since no one else seems to have gotten the reason right yet I'll sound off on it. The death corps and their mounts all almost always wear not only a gas mask but a full nuclear, biological, and chemical protection suit because they (among other things) specialize in contamination warfare, both caused by the enemy and themselves (they are rather partial to some nasty gas grenades and gas artillery). They also specialize in tunnel warfare and as others have mentioned attrition warfare. They have perfected these by having 500 years of constant bloody war on their home world in tunnels under the surface and massive battles on the heavily irradiated surface.
Fun fact, alot of the chaos marine armor resembles space marine armor from before the Horus heresy when they turned traitor. They aren't apart of the imperium so they don't get the new armor designs current space marines have
The Death Korp of Krieg... you will never find a more loyal chapter of Zealots who're trained to throw down their lives in the name of the Emperor. Their tactics are Vicious, Relentless and without Hesitation. For every 1 you kill, 6 more will be behind them with bayonets ready and closing fast like an enraged hydra.
Brotha Black, people are forgetting to tell you in the comments, that the reason they all look alike is because they use cloning to maintain their numbers, which is a highly dubious techology, but the Imperium overlooks its use as the Krieg regiments are so useful to the war effort. That's why they use gas masks, all of them, so the other allied units do not realize what is going on. They are also not named, only use numbers and numerals to designate the guardsman, because they are so expendable.

Basically kreig was a trade planet but then the government rebelled except for one city that contained a huge arsenal of nukes that the loyalists launched and destroyed the planet then they fought a war for 500 years then the loyalists won then they basically just became a planet that focused on producing armies
While comments may give you info, I'd check out Baldemort's Guide's channel. He has a voice acted backstory to the DKoK.
but a little bit of info, every Imperial planet pays a tithe of some sort to the wider Imperium to help galactic war efforts, whether it be Regiments of Guardsmen, tanks, supplies, food, etc.. There are..iirc, ten levels of tithes. The death world of Krieg is subjected to the most extreme tithe, and they fulfill it gratefully. Each year, the planet of Krieg produces 50 million guardsmen with their own supporting aircraft, armor, artillery, uniforms, etc. to be sent- at their request- to the most hellish battlefields. Their debut was on the planet of Vraks, which was a siege that lasted 17 years.
Favorite faction. Currently Necron. But I do have Blood Angels, orks, Chaos Undevided, and a few Eldar figs.

Ah! Favorite faction is the Orks. My reason is, that of all the factions in 40K, the Orks are the only ones that have found true happiness. Tuska the Demon Killa has essentially reached Utopia for an Ork. Check out his story. It's another awesome story in 40K.

The most acknowledged reason why the Kriegsmen wear gasmasks is due to the fact the majority of them are 14-16 and seeing the face of a dead teen might lower the morale of other guardsmen.

the video, cadian guard, dark angel space marines, some chaos space marines including a korn berserker, maybe former world eater marine. and of course the gas masked troops who are the kriegsman, ie the death kor or krieg the ps in korps is silent like marine corpse irl. ye space marines are hard to kill, 2 hearts, 3 lungs etc.... not to be underestimated. also notice how the tank commander straightens up a bit when the kriegsmen are around. Subtle show of respect right there.

Just so you know, the average age of Kriegsmen is 15, because of their culture, they're so eager to fight and die for the cause that they'll get themselves deployed as fast as possible, their age ranges from 13 to 20 maximum.

Imagine a Space Marine’s morale right? You know, they know they’re better than you so they’re not going to run, now remove said space marine’s will to live, and boom, that is the average Krieg soldier, they do not care if you’re a chaos cultist, chaos marine or a demon, they with charge you with no regard for their life, for only in death does duty end.
The Death Korps of Krieg come from the world of Krieg. Long story short, it's been bombed with nuclear weapons to the point it's even worse off then the Metro/Fallout series. They wear the trench coats and gasmasks ALL the time, even when not on their home world since they grew up and trained with that equipment most if not all of their lives.
Also living on an irradiated mudball of a world has made them really good at trench and siege warfare. They're also *batshit crazy* for the God-Emperor... you saw them BAYONET CHARGING a SPACE MARINE!, that's not a normal reaction to someone the size of Shaq dressed in enough armor to make an M1Abrams look like a lightweight.
pretty sure the space marine that got the rocket to the chest will survive as long as no one finished him off, they got 2 hearts and 3 lungs, and some insane regeneration ability's. he just needs some medical attention and like a days rest and he will be fine lol. more worried about how the tech priests will react to him getting a hole blown thru his armor tho lol.
I'm a big-time Imperial Guard guy. The Death Korps is one of my favorites, but I like the Valhallan Ice Warriors more.

The Guardsman tank commander has, it appears, purple eyes; this means he was born and raised on Cadia under the Eye of Terror, and is apart of one of the surviving Cadian Guardsman regiments. Cadia historically, produced some of the best Guardsman in the Imperium; since Cadia broke, the Death Korps of Kreig are not only very good (particularly excelling at siege and attrition warfare) but are producing regiments at an extremely high rate, potentially becoming one of the more numerous and widely fielded Guardsmen regiments in the Imperium as more time passes, especially since Cadia broke at the beginning of the 13th Black Crusade.
Just gonna point out all of the Guardsmen in the convoy were Cadians. The Cadian Gate was on their right shoulder plates, and they all had the telltale color schemes.

Nice video btw you should react to the AbsolutelyNothing Death Korps of Krieg as well as Sodaz other 40k films. There's actually like quite a bit out there. Favorite army has always been Black Templars for me. Its what got me into 40k, Crusaders in space.

Many Warhammer youtubers came together to make this lore video, which goes deep into the history and lore of The Death Korps, their home world,Krieg. It also answers any questions you would have on why they are the way they are, it's suburb content and it deserves more views.

Favorite faction for me is Grey Knights.
Kriegers wear gasmasks because their homeworld is a blighted, irradiated hellhole from a centuries-long civil war. As such, every Guardsman on Krieg is taught to essentially live in their full uniform, which are treated to be resistant to radiation and other contaminants. And this includes the gas mask, meaning a Death Korps Guardsman is perfectly at home in the most irradiated, diseased, and desolate worlds. As for the horse? Biologically speaking, a Krieg 'horse' has more in common with a bear than any equine, and they also wear gas masks to deal with radiation and biological weaponry.

Welcome to the Death Korps. Space Marines preferably Carcharodons Astra and the Death Korps of Krieg. I have both armies. If I had to pick a non imperial faction it would be Tyranids Hive Fleet Ouroboros.
Yo! I recommend you to react to Bricky's every 40k factions explained parts 1 and 2 they are long videos but it gives a great foundation to understand the lore of 40k and is in my opinion the best place to start for noobs!
Death korps of krieg is not the typical guardsman regiment,they are suicidal soldier where for the death in battle is the highest reward and honor for the emperor
They will willingly do a frontal charge on enemy defense line,charge on their own artilery bombardment,fight chaos marine without hesitation like in this scene
They medic was called quartermaster because they job not to threat the wounded,if the quartermaster find a krieg heavily wounded and will be burden is his job just to shoot that krieg in the head
Also for them retreating is taboo,like the biggest sin in mankind and the only punisment is death

So these trooper are regular fellas like you and me, but an elite unit for sure. The mask are aesthetic and also serve a purpose to abate biological elements. For a mortal to take down a Chaos marine........it was a good death.👊💣💪

The Death Korps must have been SEETHING that they weren’t the first to advance. They were probably happy the first convoy got ambushed so they could rush in.
And that kreig horseman at the end was definitely thinking the other soldier was a weak pussy who wasn't worthy of being alive. After all he didn't charge the enemy after his tank got blown up.

The quick summary of the Death Korps is basically every horror story you've heard about the trenches of WW1. Turned up to 11, given a chainsaw sword and set on fire.
They also take there design inspiration from WW1 French soliders.
