  • Soldiers in Colchester are taking part in trials of a new close combat course designed to give them the edge in dealing with confrontations in the space between “shouting and shooting”.
The aim is to give personnel options to deal with aggressive people short of the threat or use of lethal force.
Troops from 16 Medical Regiment, who provide medical support to 16 Air Assault Brigade, have been put through their paces on the new programme which course leaders hope will be taken up across the Army.

A friend of mine is a paramedic & it's not unusual he has to engage with people in this was, he trains frequently. Don't think being med staff it won't happen to you. It may even be more likely than other trades.

Paramedics get assaulted ALL THE TIME ! They respond to patients who are Intoxicated by alcohol, under the influence of drugs, suffering from mental illness...or a combination thereof. They also respond to calls of injuries from domestic disturbances where one or both parties are violent. They respond to all manner of locations where violence is prevalent... And sometimes the patients are just plain frightened and respond inappropriately

I thought the British Army was teaching hand to hand or close combat skills already but then again here in the U.S. they they teach it then don't then teach again then don't now there teaching it again so who know. Personally I think it Should be mandatory in ever branch to learn self defense

I think a lot of infantry regiments take it a lot more seriously, I've seen the guards and the royal marines doing proper hand to hand combat training, so I guess it just depends on the unit

Great to see, but yet another ‘skill set’ albeit a little less fierce than CQC that the RM have been doing now for many years. I always find it strange how long it takes the army to adopt things that the RM have ‘proved’ over the years.
I applaud this, and just hope that it is accepted quicker than the CQB techniques that were offered a few years ago, and not mugged off or watered down by blinkered and over cautious so called ‘SME’s’ in the some parts of the army🤞

No doubt its just intro level, but they need to be wearing helmet, chest rig and boots at some point. In the ADF that is the standard and its much more realistic / difficult that doing it in basically PT gear.

I think he used the phrase to emphasise how easily you can avoid that particular threat. Ideally, you should never be in a position in theatre where the enemy is able to punch and kick you - if you are, you have way bigger problems. I don't think his comment was meant to be taken any deeper than that, although the 3:1 rule is still generally supported for engagement anyway, as someone else alluded to.

However, make no mistake women equal to men in everyway, but they just need lower standards and lesser work, to be babied and coddled, cannot be held responsible for anything, while also being given faster promotions... but other than that totally equal in everyway!
