    I grew Sungolds for the first time this year, and I was blown away by their flavor. Their orange color also helped to protect them from predation by squirrels and birds. My red tomatoes didn't fare as well.

    Wow Farmer Fred! Thanks so much for your lightning fast response to my question!! I certainly wasn't expecting to hear back so soon!!
    I just checked out the video you were so kind to send about keeping the critters away and it gave me a lot of very useful ideas including that cloth covering you used.
    Thanks again and THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to do these great videos, answer questions and for sharing your excellent expertise with novices such as myself.
    You're truly a valued asset to the gardening community!!
    Thanks again.

    Just finding your wonderful videos now and you definitely have the best one's by far!!
    I'm just curious how you keep the animals away from your garden?
    We're about the same age and I've never grown anything before but I'm now growing Sun-gold Cherry Tomatoes in 18-20 gallon containers on an elevated wood deck. So far, I haven't had any issues with animals(birds, chipmunks, squirrels) but then again, the Sun-gold's haven't quite ripened. I'm concerned that when they do and turn a nice yellow-orange, then they will attract the critters.
    Please let me know what you think?
    Thanks again Fred for your incredibly informative and wonderful videos!!

      You’re welcome Todd and thank you for your kind words, because you have a elevated deck it should keep most of your critter problems away. I have never had any birds or squirrels bother my cherry tomatoes, also here’s a video I did before that might help answer your questions, thanks for stopping by and sharing and I hope you have a bountiful garden season! Make sure you provide plenty of support for those cherry tomato plants because they can grow 6 to 8 feet high or more. 😊

    That's all I ever grow as far as cherry tomatoes go. I've tried them all and I always go back to Sungolds.

    How do you know when to pick them?…

    • @PlantSmartLivingNOW
      @PlantSmartLivingNOW  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Harvest SunGold tomatoes as they ripen throughout summer and early autumn. Sungold fruits picked as they just start to turn yellow will be tart and snappy. Ripe tomatoes are sugary-sweet, slightly squishy, and tend to fall off the vine into your hand as you brush by to pick them. I hope you have a bountiful garden season!

    Do you have to Blanche the tomatoes before freezing?I tried to freeze summer squash and when I took them out it was all mushy

      I have never blanched my cherry tomatoes before freezing, seems to work out OK.

    Fred's my dad n grandad's name . Youre the best Fred ! One question ... I heard sungolds will all crack is you get a random rain . Like they HAVE to be watered exactly the same everyday . That true ??

    • @PlantSmartLivingNOW
      @PlantSmartLivingNOW  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi R V, I try to deep water all my plants around 1 inch per week, if it rains pretty heavy during the week I probably won’t water my plants, I have noticed some of my Sungold cherry tomatoes having cracks on them, I really don’t worry about that too much, it also may be because I leave them on the vine too long and they get too ripe. I don’t worry about watering my plants exactly the same time every day, that certainly is not necessary. I hope this helps and that you have a bountiful garden season, thanks for stopping by and sharing your kind words!

    How do I keep the chipmunks from eating my sungold tomatoes? They don't seem to bother any other tomato plant except for this one?

      Just harvest the chipmunks. Create your own bounty in the face of blight.

    You have a gorgeous garden!!! How is it that you can keep them growing when you don't grow them from the f1 hybrid seeds?? Because they would revert back to a different parent..??

      every year I buy my Sungold tomato transplants from Rays nursery… Although I do have volunteer plants that seem to work OK from the year before!

      I have a question -I want to grow cherry tomatoes on a greenhouse here in Central America due to a lot of bad insects and fungus and at the same time do it hydroponics what size bags would it be better for determined tomatoes and for undetermined tomatoes there are some at amazon heavy duty 5 gallons will it be right for both ? with such a beautiful garden even a gold basket will fit right on place -in my next life I want to be a part of your garden or I might say little piece of paradise

    How do you keep them from splitting?

    • @PlantSmartLivingNOW
      @PlantSmartLivingNOW  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes splitting is caused by overwatering or too much rain… Most of the time it doesn’t bother me if they split!
