Marshall Major - Ritchie Blackmore's Made In Japan Sound Demo

  • The guitar parts are approximate and there are some errors but I think the video backs a possible theory of how he got this tone. I used the vinyl album copy (from '72!) as a reference since every new remaster/remix sounds a bit different from each other, and from the original.
    Blackmore's guitar is of course removed as in the rest of my videos but I thought I would clear that up again just in case.
    The treble booster is in the signal chain but in the OFF position. At this moment I believe that Blackmore could have used it this way too when playing live. Being non-true bypass, the pedal still affected the sound.
    This current theory is subject to change as I dig more into Blackmore's sound. Considering that a simple shift in microphone position can yield very different results I'm pretty sure that new alternatives will come out in future videos. (Edit: Please watch the latest MIJ video for a more accurate sound using the modified Hornby Skewes booster).
    Thanks for watching and please leave your comments and subscribe!

    MIJ is my favorite Blackmore guitar tone and you really reproduced it perfectly, but we always have to consider that a part of the tone comes from the fingers (feel) of the player, so the little differences might be connected to that, and not to the equipment. Great playing btw!

    This is incredible. So accurate. Playing on point. The only frustrating thing about this is that A Marshall Major is not obtainable, or very practical at a live gig. I'd be really interested in you exploring how close you can get to this with available hardware, maybe an off-the-shelf Marshall 1959HW?

      Thank you! This was an experiment that I did at the time to explore the different circuit mods that could deliver this sound. I have since moved on to what I now believe is the most accurate formula for his MKII tone. Modified Marshall Major (I build a 100W version of the original that sounds virtually the same) + my modified Hornby Skewes-type booster. Check out "Strange Kind of Woman" 1st solo on the channel. th-cam.com/video/dx1nnuQw4Ug/w-d-xo.html and "Painted Horse" th-cam.com/video/fp8R2IpmKPE/w-d-xo.html

    Did Blackmore use the same head in Rainbow, or something a bit different to get more gain do you know?

      Hi Alec, thanks so much! I also built the treble booster, it's a modified Hornby Skewes type that I sell for $145+shipping.

    Hi Mgalbu. I'm late to the party,... you have a remarkable ability to capture the subtleties of RB's playing, but a question: that's one great tone you have there, but for us mere mortals who don't have a modified Marshall or even the opportunity for any 'real' amp and cab, what would you say was the nearest digital amp emulation (fractal, Kemper, helix, quad cortex etc) or digital pedal (I'm holding my breath right now for a Universal audio Marshall pedal as good as their Deluxe, Tweed and Vox emulations)

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris, thanks for your kind words! I'd like to be of more help when it comes to digital modeling but my experience is currently limited to the analog world only. I follow the subject when I see a good online discussion though, and from what I gather the favourite nowadays seems to be the Quad Cortex. I don't know if any of the modelers have a Marshall Major profile, or if it's possible to modify it in any way to get closer to Blackmore's tone.
      If I had to rely on anything digital, I'd go with a solution that would allow me to modify the "circuit" of the amp's profile. With that and the right booster in front, you should be getting pretty close to Ritchie's sound. Cheers, M.

    • @digitalchris6681
      @digitalchris6681 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mgalbu Hi Mgalbu, and thanks for your speedy and detailed response. The Quad Cortex (which I own, along with a lot of other digital stuff, as unfortunately much of my playing has to take place in a bedroom via headphones...) has the following Marshall amp emulations: JCM 800, JCM 900, Super Lead 100, Lead 50, JTM 45, Silver Jubilee. However, so far none to me sound RB-ish: mostly too dark sounding and too overdriven (not a good combination). Ok, I can add a treble booster and/or equalise the sound but In the world of real Marshall amps, which of these models would you say may be the nearest starting point?

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@digitalchris6681 I'd start with a Super Lead and go from there. Can you replace the power tubes with KT88? Not sure how big of an effect it would have on the overall sound but there's nothing to lose if anything. Get the amp to a nice edge of breakup tone and push it into overdrive with a booster. Can you use a real pedal in front of the QC? I'm guessing yes.
      Also, select a nice 4x12 with vintage G12H Greenbacks as your cab. Huge part of the equation.

    • @digitalchris6681
      @digitalchris6681 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mgalbu Great, thanks. The Quad Cortex doesn't have a 'change the tubes' feature (like the amp section of the Torpedo, which, stupidly, I've just sold) or an amp bias adjustment feature like the Helix (which, again, I sold in order to buy the QC). but I'll certainly start with the Super Lead. I've got several (real) booster pedals so that's less of a problem, and there is a QC G12H greenback emulation available. Thanks so much for your advice. One day.... (I'm now a young and sprightly 64 and have been trying to play and sound like RB for literally 50 years) I'll nail those licks... or perhaps not, but it's great fun trying....

    • @mgalbu

      I'm still using the Rivera Rockcrusher, it's built like a tank and it's very transparent for what I use it. I can't really say there aren't others that do a better job but, depending on how much attenuation you need, you might want to look into reactive load vs. resistive load attenuators. I read good things about the Suhr unit but there are others as well. Fryette, Torpedo, Scumback, etc. Cheers, M.

    How did you come to the conclusion that Ritchie had the Treble booster (first a Hornby Skewes than a custom made booster) off on Made In Japan and Who Do We Think We Are? On the Copenhagen gig isn’t there his Treble booster behind his amps? You really nail the tone. Did Ritchies Treble Booster have an on/off switch? The Hornby Skewes had no controls at all but he had a volume control built in to it. He used both Germanium and Silicon versions of the HS booster.

    • @mgalbu
      @mgalbu  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! At the time before I made this video I noticed that at the end of the Copenhagen show in '72 Blackmore puts his Strat on top of the Major and the guitar cable seemed to go straight into it. So I looked into what kind of mods he might have done to his amp in order to sound like that without the booster. I thought the results were good so I entertained the idea of him either going direct to amp, or using the booster off as some sort of high frequency filter. I did a lot of sound tests and I was getting very close to the originals with this setup. In the time after I posted this video I kept experimenting till I hit a wall and was not able to get certain sounds out of using no booster. So I had to go back and rethink the whole theory. I did lots of new modifications to the amp's circuit as well as the booster's. I'll soon post a new video with my current setup, which I like better.
      As far as I could research, there was no Germanium version of the HS booster. Other people looking into how Blackmore got his sound came out with that theory and built one but I have not heard any convincing sound tests as of yet. I borrowed it from a friend myself and couldn't get any decent sound out of it. Cheers! M.

    • @matsandersson8857
      @matsandersson8857 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mgalbu So you’re back to the theory that he did use the Treble Booster? According to Bernd Meiser who makes BSM Treble Boosters and has written and searched a lot Ritchie had three Hornby Skewes Treble Boosters one being a Germanium version. This should have been used on Made In Japan. But you really nailed the tone without i think. Richie’s amp had cascaded channels and then you can change the gain, filtering and feedback not much more you can do. Later John ”Dawk” Stillwell modded his amps. I think I’ve red he added a preamp valve. I mailed with Dawk many years ago. He offered me to buy a Marshall Major that was modded like Ritchies. He had it on a shelf and he even sent me a photo of it. But if i remember correctly he wanted 20 000$ for it so i passed. How much will the wiring layout cost? Or have you revised it since you’ve changed your amp? Do you use the same transformer as the original or a smaller one since it’s only two KT88’s? Amazing playing!

      Blackmore used a modified Marshall Major with a modified Hornby Skewes treble booster during his MKII and MKIII Deep Purple days. He said as much and after testing both theories I have no doubt. Cheers, M.

    If I may be so bold to ask: what is this isolation cab you speak of? Home-built (pictures?) or bought product? Also, which G12H 55Hz do you use? 8 / 16 ohm (I guess the latter), 30 / 65 / 100 Watt? Thanks! :-)

      It's a big home-built iso cab that I made with plywood and acoustic foam. Very easy to do and very afforfable. I run a long cable from the attenuator (-3dB) all the way to the garage where the iso cab lives. I will make a video about it some day, as it works incredibly well. I'm playing at all times without bothering anybody and the sound that comes out of it is no louder than a normal conversation. The '72 G12H are stamped T1281 to be precise. Pulsonic 014 cones, 30W.
