I promise the lead vocal on this video is only 1 track. 😉 only a couple side layers from the studio version. But down the middle is just the one vocal. I can answer more if ya need it 😀
FYI the engineers at Ashtone Studio have confirmed that the vocals are a one-take recording at the same time as the guitar. Drums are also one take but recorded separately as the drummer is the guitarist...
I really feel like he tries to keep Darko vocals fresh from Chelsea grin which is very smart. You can tell it’s still Tom in Chelsea grin but he’s definitely doing different stuff in both bands.
I highly recommend watching a video of Chelsea Grin performing live on Warped Tour 2018, when Tom was already their lead singer. This video for the track "Hostage" can be found on CaliberTV.
I have no idea what any of this means, but I really enjoyed how you broke it down and explained it. I just want more Darko US, because damn they are refreshing. Keep up the great work!
This makes me hope he breaks down Traitors- menace II society soon. Tyler brought back the moose vocals and I need to see Marks reaction and analysis lol. Tom and Tyler are 2 of the more immediately identifiable vocalists with odd techniques and sounds.
@@KardavoxAcademy that would be amazing! Traitors dosen't get the love they deserve alot of times. Also how're the Viraemia boys doing? I know covid was tough with I think you said Josh being in the medical field.
I love your videos, your breakdowns have helped me improve a lot as a vocalist and have helped me get closer to a sound I can be happy with. Keep up the amazing work!
Dude watching you do basically the exact same train of thought and trial & error that I did to attempt to hone in on his sound was bizarrely exciting. I was almost jumping out of my seat when you caught onto the tongue>pulled back thing.
I love hearing the vocal breakdowns that you put out, I've followed Tom for years and took vocal influence from him. Hearing the science/anatomy behind how we do these vocals is so intriguing to me
You can choose if you wanna say the "US" or not It's just something to identify them differently, cause I think there was already a group (idk where from) named Darko before them It's the same with "Novelists FR"
Mark....sir.... I've been following your channel for over a year I have heard you mention the bands that you're in hundreds of times and for some reason it never clicked until yesterday to check you guys out. I was exposed to between sea and sky first, just going to tell you that it is mind-blowing that's something this good exists and I did not know about it. And then I listen to snow sleep and now I just want to keep listening and you guys are on my Spotify rotation, just wanted to say hi from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada and say that I love your channel and my God absolutely love kardashev!
Tom is a Beast! One of the top best out there period! He has different styles he uses for different bands and its amazing. Darko is Legit!!!!! Cant wait til they tour, gonna be sold out shows!!!
Would really love to hear you analyze the live in studio version they did of Mars Attacks. He does a vocal technique on that that I just have no idea where it comes from. Sounds like it would just be shredding your vocal cords.
I honestly don't know why Tom is my favorite extreme vocalist. There is just something about his vocals that I think are unique sounding and so brutal. I can hear a song for the first time that I have never heard before and from the first scream know that it is Tom Barber. That is what happened to me with Darko. A friend showed me Insects and I immediately knew it was Tom and was curious to what project it was. He is just so good and if I could pick any vocalist to start a brutal project it would be him without hesitation. There are a bunch of vocalists who are as good as him or maybe even better technically, but he has that x factor for me personally. Love him and love Darko because it is so brutal and allows Tom to be more experimental and take chances!
I KNEW you were going to have a blast analyzing this one. It was great to see you having so much fun with it, Mark! Thanks as always. Hope you're well.
Also I love how when Tom screams "words are no longer words" the way he says "words" is so nasty and grimy like he's throwing up and saying "words" And you can also really hear baby j's emmure influence on this one with the guitar sounds he makes haha but seriously Darko has become one of my favorite bands ever within the last year or so
I love this song, and Tom is one of my favorite vocalists and biggest inspirations for growling/screaming. Glad to see you break this down, it was a great reaction! Also, Mark, have you heard the new song from The Agonist, Remnants In Time? Vicky is insanely dynamic in that song, maybe the Patrons will come through and see it on the channel some day!
Great reaction, and vocal lesson. I love Darko. I've been practicing my metal vocals since 2010. I sound like Cradle Of Filth/Dani Filth. That's just my natural scream, but I can switch to black metal and metalcore/deathcore vocals as well. 🦇🎃🦇🤘🏽🎸
On his music mentors online thing, he actually says that what you described with the Pee-wee Herman type sound is exactly what he does haha. Iirc it's like, start with the true voice and add in false chord? It's been a while since I've watched it
Hope u don't miss his live performance for "Mars Attack", he hits something like a whistle fry in a very hard way, as a vocal myself who does a lot of whistle fry's I think that specific part is the best one recorded for DarkoxCaliberTV (I don't know how to explain it but I think that u are gonna understand me if u listen it hahaha) . At the beginning, I genuinely thought you said "Rarely... do we get... such DjennnnnT" because I wasn't watching your mouth say it, I was just listening. I laughed with excitement at that delivery. Went to rewatch it and realized you said "gems". Slightly disappointed you didn't say it the way I heard it lol.
You talk about different techniques a lot. But I don't know them. Should we wait for a video where you describe different kinds of extreme vocal techniques, the most basic ones, how they sound and what the difference is between them?
Tom makes me really wish I could do False Cord well. Mine is so bland and boring. I’m happy with what I do know, but FC is the first kind of scream I learned and then gave it up because well I was never good at it.
Just a heads up: the new Sleep Token album dropped today! Please please please check out "Atlantic" and "Hypnosis." Both tracks are absolute masterpieces that I think you'll enjoy reacting / listening to! 😊
I only know of three guys who play that way: Baby J (Emmure, Glass Cloud, Darko US), Buster Odeholm (Vildhjarta, Humanity's Last Breath), and Austin Evans (Orthodox).
I love Tom's highs, and for his distinction in the field his lows as well, but I definitely had a subconcious thought of them being "lazy" in a way too...I never would've brought about that adjective on my own but it is a good one because it does mean overall his technique is perfect as far as longevity, but I remember hearing his lows for the first time and thinking "he's getting away with these?? Barely-articulated, dry, word vomit?" Haha - but it's akin to some minimalist painting where hey it is art, subjective, gets the job done/evokes the necessary emotion without needing to lean so hard into it
Between Darko US and Archspire, I'm getting my ears demolished in the best way possible by brutal vocals lately. Hope you do an analysis of the latter at some point if possible. And oh yeah, Silent Planet just announced their full length??? Ugggh, I'm sorry, wallet. XD
