This may sound corny buy Sammy davis jr was a gift sent from the up above to this planet to brighten up people’s lives. I only wish i was born in his era so i could of gone to see him perform and enjoy his insane talents....Sammy sang the national anthem at the beginning of a baseball game sometime in during the 1970’s, i was dumbfounded hearing him sing, i was moved to tears and i’m not american and i’m not a baseball fan... That was the true genius Sammy davis jr was. Rip Sammy.
I saw him late in his life with Sinatra. He performed this dazzling break dance, after which, Sinatra revealed to the audience that Davis had undergone hip replacement surgery just five months earlier! A most remarkable entertainer who literally gave his all to the audience. He may not have been as funny as Dean Martin, he may not have been quite the vocalist as Sinatra, but hell, overall, he was the most gifted and talented of the "Rat Pack" and anywhere else. He could do it all--brilliantly. ❤
I believe he was also a multi-instrumentalist........he could play basically every conventional instrument.....piano, drums, guitar and I believe trumpet.
Agreed, I liked Cavett's show. He was so quick and smart...a "thinking man's comic." He actually was a writer for Johnny Carson at one point, then went head-to-head with him with this show. They were both from Nebraska, both comics and magicians.
No interruptions, no vulgarity, no grand-standing, no hogging up the stage, a class A act all the way, and that's just for starters. DC is like no other talk-show host out there. And, Sammy Davis, wow, what talent. Tragic story, though. I read his autobiography "Yes, I Can" back when it was first published, left a lasting impression. A black man who suffered so much yet gave so much back. They don't make folks like Sammy anymore. RIP, I still miss the man, good to see him again on this site.
Dalí_Hemingway Dick Cavett is literally the worst host I’ve ever seen, tried to watch his interview with John Lennon and had to stop watching it as he was terrible
I saw Sammy David Jr. years ago at a theater that's no longer there. He was fantastic I was a young girl I'll never forget him. Then I saw him on All in the family and The mod squad he was so natural. And one of my favorite show Dick Cavett. Loved him.
Back then there were only 4 channels on TV, ABC, NBC, CBS & PBS. Both Dick Cavett and Johnny Carson were on at the same time and we had to switch channels really fast to see who had the best guests on that night.
The Cavett interviews are a treasure, because Dick would book who he was interested in (for example, a 30 minute interview with veteran performers like John Carradine). We're given some wonderful oral histories thanks to Mr. Cavett and they are treasures.
Very true, and Johnny Carson ate his lunch by keeping things moving along. Wonderful oral histories are what close on Saturday night, to paraphrase George Kaufman.
Brilliant. Heartwarming to know Sammy stayed with his wife, who was briefly seen in the end, until he died. A shame the numbers he did was cut out here but I guess some algorithm would pick it up.
@@DarkSkies72 One word. Sammy. The original one name act before Elvis, Cher, Madonna, etc. Elvis was good but, Sammy had to fight the color barrier before he could achieve his and had way more talent than Elvis.
How can somebody be so entertaining in the best meaning of the word by just sitting there talking. Was wondering multiple time who was the host and who was guest. What a character!
I have not seen this since I saw on TV back in 1971. I thought I remembered him doing an impression of John Barrymore, which was sensational. He also imitated some cowboy 'walks' which is not in this clip, so maybe the clip is not complete. Great to see this again. Thanks.
So sad The two musical numbers he did could not be included here… But I guess that’s because of wretchedly danged groovy licensing rights? Crap !!!! 😢. Anyway, thanks Jones for posting this. Sammy forever!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing! & I find it funny that even 24 people it looked like hit the 'thumbs down button'...Which is nothing, there are ALWAYS gonna' be people who love to hate everything; From maybe this show, your channel or whose on it?! Some, just knock things down for whatever reason, zero reason, just to even spread hate into the world or perhaps they are jealous or afrid of your channel! I mean bcuz why would you do that on someone's channel?! I get that not everyone likes everything & everybody;....but it's like then don't watch...I usually like everything I watch, whether it's cut great or not...Hey your most likely watching free through your internet & if you see something you don't like don't watch & I figure if someone has taken' the time upload it, especially older stuff like this...Which people relly put time into uploading from probably from a much older medium to the internet so you can enjoy or not! I saw Sammy perform live at a "theater in the round" in the early 1980's when I was 10. To this day he is hands down the best live performer I've ever seen. His command of the stage was astounding, made even more so by the fact that he had to play to an audience all around him, 360º. Not one audience member left that show feeling anything less than 110% entertained. His talents were mind blowing. Singing, dancing, jokes, voices, bantering with the audience. All with such ease. He was born to do what he did, and he did it at the highest level possible.
Japanese are a quiet audience. Remember when Mike Tyson was KOed by Buster Douglas in Tokyo the Tokyo Dome was almost silent while witnessing the biggest upset in boxing history
