It's hard to make a argument on who's the greatest, we all have our bias. From Jimi, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and SRV , I'm not gonna include the Jazz greats, we are talking Rock guitar. Jimi is the consensus winner in all the polls taken nationally because there will never be another Jimi , the most influential Axe man in history . Quoted, from the great Jeff Beck. In my humble opinion Jimi was evolving into what Eddie Hazel already was, never in my life heard Rock guitar played in the style of Eddie Hazel , the melodic, rhythm and natural flow is unmatched ...
First, I don't know who is that "Jimmie" you're talking about. Then Eddie simply got influenced by Jimi, under the banner of funk. Hendrix would definitely have evolved into something much more progressive. You can check Robert Fripp's interview about Hendrix, it's one of the many sources of that statement. I don't want to simply bash you down, I just think it's wrong to say that Hazel, as great as he is, was ahead of Hendrix in term of lick originality. What I hate most of all is that you dare to say that while you can't spell Jimi properly, which you should be able to do if you had heard even one of his songs.
MrMeiryou First, Eddie Hazel was the most underrated guitarists of all time. Hendrix was the only Black that the White corporate music structure would allow to cross over. Clapton, Beck , Page and cohorts got all the press. Eddie was the only dude injecting Jazz elements in Rock guitar, playing minor's against major's, technical and fast but still had a brilliant sense of melody. Bashing me down, PLEASE' don't waste my time arguing who was better, that's a subjective question and that's a debate that will go on forever, and i don't let Rolling Stone magazine cloud my view point with a bullshit list of top 100 greatest ever.. Eddie was the one for me and many other's
Abraham Jackson So what, it's like calling skywalker "starkiller" because it was its first name. Tbh I don't know if you're answering to me or not, what you say is unrelated to my words. I never said Hazel was not underrated, I'm just saying I think you're wrong when you say that he "already was what Hendrix would evolve into". As for being the only dude injecting jazz into rock guitar, I don't think so. Really, listen to progressive rock from the 60s. Finally, what the hell with this "this is subjective don't waste my time arguing who was better". I've never mentioned anything about one being "better". Btw Maggot brain IS on whatever rolling stone magazine top 10 solos. Don't misunderstand, I'm a big fan of Hazel. I even believe that G. Clinton built funkadelic around him. It's just that I don't agree with your sentences. Please read my comment thoroughly if you intend to answer.
MrMeiryou Your right, The Bird's and many Psychedelic bands of the 60's was experiencing with Jazz.I was watching a documentary, The Bird's lead guitar player mentioned using Coltrain. I feel 'Jimi' would have progressed in the direct of Jazz.. John Coltrain was at a space/ spiritual Jazz, what Jimi was talking about at the time of his passing. Alice Coltrain, Pharaoh Sanders continued that texture . Jimi playing with Miles Davis, Chick Corea, George Duke or Frank Zappa would have been the logical next step. What do you think?
Eddie Hazel & Glenn Goines Two of the baddest guitarist Pfunk ever had in the band!! I miss these guys so much!! just imagine how pfunk would be right now if they were still with the band!! God Bless these two brothers and what they left behind!! Thank you Mr.Hazel& Mr.Goines for laying the foundation for all guitar players all over the world! You shall never be forgotten! P Funk 4 Life!! A true fan forever!! Ira D. Tucker
Mr. Eddie Hazel is in a class all by himself!! God Bless you Mr. Hazel & Thankyou for setting the path for other guitar players all over the world!! God bless your soul!! RIP Eddie!! We miss you!! Pfunk forlife!! Loyal fan!! Ira Tucker
i have listened to this solo over and over and this is def one of the best ive ever heard. i love his timing, sound, feel everything, he has it all, too bad so few people know him
The comment is cool up until you mentioned the creator with a small g. cmon brother when you write your name out on an job application, you do capitalize your name right? Jus saying that referring to the Most High with a small g is kinda like in insult to His name and character. No harm intended.
I love his playing. His tone is fantastic. His groove is tight. He's technically abled. He really pours himself into his instrument. Eddie is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. Clips as hot as this one just let you sit back and really appreciate the man.
aaaw, Eddie Hazel killing it. truly one of the best guitarists ever, also one of the most underrated like someone below said. alot of guitarists dont know him, its a a shame!!! RIP Eddie
This is awesome. I remember watching pfunk in my early years and didn't realize how good they were, but watching this & looking back this was the BOMB!!!
I've been listening to Eddie Hazel and funkadelic since they first came out he is my favorite guitar player. He always delivered and then some. I've got red hot mama part 1 and part 2 on a 45.
This is an awesome video post!!! From 1976 to now I have seen PFunk at least 7 times live in Charlotte, N.C. I didn't realize how good I had it then but now I know. This is what I grew up with...PFunk forever!!!
Eddie you blessed us all wiff juss a touch of LOVE from your God gift he gave you, may u ress in P FunK in Heaven with the LORD, Thank U and Your Fam for allowing us a P funk of U !
This is a late post but to the guy saying that Eddie should have lost those other musicians. Son go cop "Guitar Dames and Thangs " that's got too be the most underrated album EVER and the band is pretty much the same as you see in this video. They ARE the baddest band in the world!!!
Just like Hendrix, Eddie Hazel had that psychedelic blues riffs. I love his solos. I saw him with Bootsy at the Channel in Boston. Only half as many pfunk all stars. Mike deferred to Eddie for Maggot Brain. I have a soft heart for Eddie Hazel RIP.
Ahhh eddie eddie those days in the early 70's the funkadelic biannual tour to dc the lights would go down and everyone else would step bck -- just like in this clip eddie would bring pure love and dedication to his instrument for thousands to just groove to if only for 3-5 minutes still seems like yesterday
Eddie Hazel was one of the brightest talents the P-Funk mob ever had come up through their ranks (along with bassist William "Bootsy" Collins and keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell). A true original who departed this world earlier than he should have. When folks talk about who the best rock guitarists of the 70s were, they better include Hazel's name SOMEWHERE in the Top 10 (if not 5, ftm).
eddie was a huge jimi fan. in fact, eddie was chosen by most music mags to be the "next jimi hendrix". and eddie also took a lot of his sound from the sounds of nature and just city living noises. and this midwestern girl loved him to pieces in real life. he was/is my best friend and i'll never forget him. we met at a mcdonald's in 1968 when we were both 18.. i know eddie hazel inside and out--we practically grew up together.
I can feel Jimi Hendrix in his music! The effects he's using is very vintage sounding too! I love the mixture flavors and colors in his jams! It has everything in it, Blues, Funk, Afro-Cuban and Rock! I bet he's jamming with brother Jimi right now!!
OK, another last thing: at first I regretted not getting into this music earlier, but now I feel very fortunate to have discovered this music when I did. It allows me to appreciate all of the glorious aspects of the PFT Thang and not just one group or one instrumentalist. All of it is glorious. And by the way, in my humble opinion, anyone who can't see the genius in the "Games, Dames..." album is smoking some dangerous form of crack!
And that's exactly what that album does. The A-Team's support of the featured soloist enhances his performance. It energizes his own stroke. That is why that album still holds up today and people still shell out top dollar for an original copy.
Man, thanks for posting this!! I've watched it 12 times in the last 2 days at least (home & work)! I ran it through my stereo & the hairs stood up on my neck!! My neighbors may hate me now but they will get over it :). PEACE
thats what made them so different and unique!! You don't become the best band in the world by being like everyone else....you have to be different, and thats why this band has been so successful and the best of the best...............legends.......p in da funk!! -Atomic Dog
Eddie was one of the 1970 contemporaries who followed quickly in the footsteps of Jimi Hendrix. What an immense tone, and what a sense of timing! Are you sure this is from 1979?
@Funkateer81: I've traveled a long route through music world up to now and from my point of view there is one podium at the highest mountain of music world and on this podiom Jimmy Hendrix and Eddie Hazel are sitting. The rest is at the foot of the mountain. Yes, all the rest.
Holy shit this just blows me away! These guys are legit ROCK STARS!!! I never knew anything about their music except the pop "funky" stuff. This is just downright NASTY.. I was born in 1979
Black people discovered the GROOVE ages ago from the sounds in nature and in the last century have evolved it into music like this. It dont get no better. Eddie Hazel must have been a big Jimi fan. this midwestern white boy loves this shit.
Never mind them. The great thing about music is the ability to transcend color lines and relate to common human experience!! Hazel is a beast!!! i just picked up a strat. Maybe one day i can jam like that. I just hate im having trouble playing chords!!! ITs a pain!!!
I think the biggest difference between Eddie Hazel and every other guitarist I can think of is the fact that if you listen, every note he ever played, came from his soul! You can hear it if you close your eyes and listen. Check it out...
Eddie was one with his guitar and a true musical genius. George Clinton is such an amazingly talented weirdo who's never gotten full credit for all of his musical accomplishments. I mean, he helped put together two of the most incredible albums of all time--Standing on the Verge of Getting it On (with Eddie Hazel) and Mothership Connection--both in the same year! Eddie deserves to be far higher than number 43 on the Rolling Stone list. This piece proves it!
What I really dig about this is that the other musicians gave him room to express himself.. Modern drummers (YOUNGER) would get caught up and while that 's can be cool-- more is not always better. Instead this song has a driving beat and that's what set up the room for expression.
All you young folks out ther under 30 years of age - watch and learn children. This is music.
It's hard to make a argument on who's the greatest, we all have our bias. MrMeiryou When Jimmie was playing with The Isley Bro's , Jimmie was the way his name was spelled...
Abraham Jackson So what, it's like calling skywalker "starkiller" because it was its first name. Tbh I don't know if you're answering to me or not, what you say is unrelated to my words. this man was touched by god , boy could he play
The comment is cool up until you mentioned the creator with a small g.
cmon brother when you write your name out on an job application, you do capitalize your name right?
Jus saying that referring to the Most High with a small g is kinda like in insult to His name and character. No harm intended.
Haha I can't even grasp how ignorant and unnecessary that comment is.
The best piece of live guitarism I have been lucky to ever see. RIP Eddie. Peace and love from the UK.
If you were a music fan then, with no hang ups about things, this was some of the best music on the planet....always will be.
I love his playing. His tone is fantastic. His groove is tight. He's technically abled. He really pours himself into his instrument. Eddie is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. Clips as hot as this one just let you sit back and really appreciate the man.
This is the ultimate guitarist always into his music like no other. He was the entertainer.
What an underrated awesome guitarist Mr. Hazel was. We will never see his like again. Peace and Love from the Uk.
this IS shredding a guitar!! The licks are just wYcked! All bow to Eddie the DUDE!
aaaw, Eddie Hazel killing it. truly one of the best guitarists ever, also one of the most underrated like someone below said. alot of guitarists dont know him, its a a shame!!! RIP Eddie
This is beautiful. God, where has this kind of musical joy gone?
This is awesome. I remember watching pfunk in my early years and didn't realize how good they were, but watching this & looking back this was the BOMB!!!
Love this. Especially the ending when he plays light yet so smooth.
Just look at Eddie Hazel's face while he's playing. It's almost like even he can't believe how amazing this sounds!
I bet there are a lot of guitar players out there who wish the spirit of Eddie Hazel would channel through their bodies for even just five minutes.
I've been listening to Eddie Hazel and funkadelic since they first came out he is my favorite guitar player. He always delivered and then some. I've got red hot mama part 1 and part 2 on a 45.
My favourite guitar player
I've heard/read about P-Funk...but, to actually get to hear/see the music. Amazingly beautiful. Radio wouldn't touch this today. Simply amazging.
This is an awesome video post!!! From 1976 to now I have seen PFunk at least 7 times live in Charlotte, N.C. I didn't realize how good I had it then but now I know. This is what I grew up with...PFunk forever!!!
I've seen this video at least 20 times, everytime I watch it I watch at least 3 or 4 times in a row . and still WOW
I never thought of looking for clips of EDDIE HAZEL on TH-cam until now. I've seen him a few times, great guitarist! Gone way too soon.
That shit! Eddie Hazel was a fucking beast!
Eddie you blessed us all wiff juss a touch of LOVE from your God gift he gave you, may u ress in P FunK in Heaven with the LORD, Thank U and Your Fam for allowing us a P funk of U !

Damn this guy is as good as Hendrix, had Hendrix lived this is the direction he would have taken.... his roots.
You can tell he worked hard at this. That is talent.
unbelievably solid, smooth yet funky sound.
Smeero doin' his thang!Guitar solos normally leave me cold but THIS guy!Criminally underated.Beautiful soul.
Wow...truly phenomenal lead guitarist. Amazing.

Awesome 👍
@eoinb57 this is a track by Funkadelic called Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On.
I think the biggest difference between Eddie Hazel and every other guitarist I can think of is the fact that if you listen, every note he ever played, came from his soul! You can hear it if you close your eyes and listen. Check it out...
My God. Eddie RIP. Awesome.
Eddie Hazel go you good thing!
thanks
Music is God´s speech - for ALL !
Best music in the World.!!!!
Eddie Hazel rockin' the funk out!

this clip is shear bliss, his best playing on camera
Amazing

was that "standing on the verge" they were playing in the background! WOW
lol! very nicely done!
@shaq666uk If I'm not mistaken it was done as part of "Standing on the Edge of Gettin It On".
so so so so so goooooood
