    I drove Amarok 1 year ago at dealer's center. It was Rancho version - I liked it very much and still I regret I didn't buy it when I was able to do that.
    Maybe Hilux also good, but even specs says Amarok is a bit better.

    Comparing this to a Hilux may work for a video review. However, put on a few hundred thousand miles and you will find out the VW is guaranteed to cost you more money in upkeep and maybe even leave you stranded because of some stupid german electrical issue....

    Volkswagens in general are under-rated in terms of their truly awesome durability and reliability. The Amarok is very popular here in Jamaica.

    • @kraenk12
      @kraenk12 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah..no idea why only the Americans seem to have problems with reliability. Probably unable to maintain them properly.

    • @Maurazio
      @Maurazio 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I guess it's because historically if your vehicle breaks down in the american deserts, steppes, snow etc. it can mean death, cell reception still not good everywhere either, and low density means hours can go by without anyone coming by. Not a problem in europe or in jamaica, that is small, tropical and has high density population, i don't think anyone could die even if they tried. Today for most people there's no reason anymore, but history is history i guess.

    I've got a 2014 3.0L Turbo Diesel Hilux. No modifications and I've found the fuel efficiency to be better than our old 2003 2.8L Diesel Hilux which we had for 10 years. So when the host says he's guzzling fuel compared to his companions V10 or whatever, I wonder whether it's because of the modifications the Hilux in the video had (thereby increasing the weight and more drag) or because he's probably changing gears a lot more than is required? Any which way it's all down to the individual taste but I'm happy with the Hilux, you can keep your Amarok.

    Here in South Africa, there are basically only 3 workhorses for farmers, construction people and the general family man i.e. the Isuzu KB the Hilux and Mazda B series. The Amarok is relatively new here and according to local vehicle reviews competes mainly with the newer Ford/Mazda and the new Isuzu, while the Hilux does not even feature in reviews due to it's age and lack of updates. The irony of this issue is that the Hilux has been the "BEST" selling pick up since the 70's till present, albeit being years behind with their current Hilux range. I'm sure this testament enough to support the 'bullet proof' reputation of a tried and tested vehicle. I'm just not sure how the Amarok or any other brand will compete with the new Hilux due for launch later in 2014/2015.....waiting very patiently for the arrival of the revival of the KING OF PICK UP's

    I have a 2016 Hilux and Ive got to say 3 words to all these Hilux die hards... TIMING. CHAIN. TENSIONER. Mine is rattling like hell... I don't think the new hiluxs are built like the old ones, with cost being a big factor in manufacturing. I've just bought a 2012 Amarok Ultimate also, so my opinion will be as unbiased as they coming owning both. Check back in 6 months time and I'll give you the low down!!!

    • @stevethedonful
      @stevethedonful 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @marijanmahne that's a good question. The Amarok has a better (ZF) gearbox that changes faster, but the Hilux isn't a bad ute.. if they were the same price, I'd chose the hilux, but the Toyota is much more expensive so I would go the Amarok

  • @artfulroger1665
    @artfulroger1665 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Amarok takes it in every catergory? I challenge you to load & unload goods from the rear bed ( such as a 50" LCD T.V !) And then see how practical it is! The clearance is a little higher than the Toyota plus the tailgate is larger, making it more difficult to load & unload goods . You have to climb in to retrieve your goods!

It was not a bad vid but I needed more defined information regarding details, space, drivetrain etc. and perhaps the "vs" title is promising to much also, since it was not a real vs. Never mind though - The question is will you XCAR take this as your next crew car if you should replace the HI-LUX ?

    to be honest on road these may be compared though off-road toyota no matter whether it be a cruiser, hilux or any other 4x4 in this market space toyota puts forward it can do offroad and can get it repaired anywhere in the world, can''t really say this is the same for VW, Mercedes, porche or any other european 4x4 manufacturer
    don't get me wrong mercedes and VW at this stage might have a usable product for today's market though I suppose it really depends what you class as off road in terms of travel and unless you are touring ..
    to be honest i would hazard a guess if you were to buy a any toyota today vs the same in VW I would hazard a guess the great great grandkids will be driving that toyota long after you have died, though I couldn't put land rover, VW, Mercedes in the same light in terms of maintenance and repairs...
    atleast with toyotas they make them to last, I can't say the same with any of the european manufacturers..

      You don't have to wait 10 years. Amarok turns shit after warranty runs out. It has DPF problems, dual flywheel issues, air cabin fan issues. ABS will kill you off road if you forget to turn it to off road mode. The cheapo bearings on rear axle run out on me after 150000km.
      However if you use it as a mall crawler (as i do) the comfort is definitely way better then Hilux. If i had to choose again it would be Amarok with all it's faults over Hilux.

      New Hilux's and new Toyota's in general are not as reliable as they were previously know for. Plus current Hilux's are way out of date. Drive a Hilux back to back with almost any other modern ute and you will see how old school teh Hilux is. I have a PX Ranger and drive a Hilux with work, and have to say I much prefer driving The Ranger than the Hilux. Ill have to wait and see what the Rangers long term reliability is since It's only a year old.

      As far as the ride is concerned then yeah I do agree these light trucks are not as comfortable as they can be or should be. The Toyota Hilux and the Nissan Navara/Frontier, both could use softer suspension, no doubt about that.

    I´m deep into the Toyota camp. But where I live there are many Amaroks drivng around, so I felt i had to test one. The dealer had a top of the line as a demo car. With the 8-speed automatic. And to say the least i was highly disappointed. The car itself drove good at the A-roads. On B-roads it felt better than the HiLux. But i was left with an impression that VW had´t thought the car trough. the reversing camera was misplaced, under the tailgate (wrong word, I know) where dirt collected and was hard to clean off. The messages in the displays was written in a really bad language. "Put the choosing stick in parking"(directly translated from Norwegian). The felt build quality of the exterior was not quite up to the level i had found in the Toyota. But then we have the engine and gearbox. The lack of a low range and lockable centre diff is a turnoff for me. I'm not entirely sold on the 2.0 liter engine. I find it to be too small. But the programming of the gearbox is the most horrid thing I've ever experienced in a car/truck. During any form of acceleration the engine shot up to 4000rpm. The noise was horrid. When we had reached our speed the engine fell to 1200rpm and the whole car started shaking. there were so many times i had to oversteer the gearbox. And to make matters worse, in uphills it started out in 5th gear, then up to 7th, down to 2nd, up to 4th, before I in furious anger put it in Manual and did the shifting myself. All this in a constant speed of 55km/h. That is not how I want any of my cars to behave.
    I love the design of the Amarok. I would gladly have accepted a entry level amarok with single turbo, manual gearbox, lockable centre with low range and no reversing camera to worry about. But I do not want to pay for it.

    No low range.. yes so i presume that you are driving the 8 speed auto.. Elaborate on that a little and get people to see the light on what really lies in the drivetrain.. I do feel you missed a lot of technical facts, improvements and features that this car brings to the table in comparison to the Hilux's and a lot of other 4x4 pickups in this market segment.
    Anyways.. buy what you feel is the best..

      @BlahBleeBlahBlah 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, I was looking out to see if it was the 8 speed auto, got a glimpse of the shifter on the interior shots. IMHO the ZF 8-speed makes up a huge part of what makes the Amarok so damn good, and fuel efficient. First gear is basically your low range, and on the highway and cruising around town the close ratios keep the engine either in the power band or at peak efficiency. The gearbox alone is massively ahead of everything else in the market in both refinement and performance.

    "Quite not in the same league as the Hilux and Range Rover"
    Are you serious? Range Rover is a Luxury SUV. The amarok is supposed to be used as a truck. Not an offroader. Sure it must be able to go through a forest road or something but this is a truck. Like a RAM is. It is used in construction sites and stuff. This guy is stupid. Where is the bald guy? i want him back, this douche makes me cringe.

    I am a fan of this channel and most of the time I agree with the opinions presented by the numerous hosts but in this case the comparison is not accurately conveyed. There are 5 criteria’s to consider in order to appreciate their pros and cons. The first one is the time each model has been offered in the market, in the case of the hilux model IMV, which is produce since 2005 while the amarok is, produces recently. Liability is the second criteria, which Toyota in all it´s models has no adversaries. Third are the engine´s configuration and the different hp offerings with in the models. The forth criteria is the different continents where it is sold. The last criteria are the most important of all them, supply and demand, in which the truck has to be the number one in sales.

    Well-well.... Our Amarok is a 2011 BiTdi. The vehicle has only delivered the best for us and until now it has only done long distance hauling and bush driving and off roading with a ton's worth of camper on the loadbay. As for the Hilux fans out there, yes you have much to lean on, but the Amarok truely delivers. Have never tried the 8 speed auto box, but ours still has a manual box with low range and diff lock coupled with an amazing offroad functionalty program which most other trucks do not have. Point is you can still get the Amarok with manual box, low range, diff lock in South Africa (2L130KW).. Pitty you cannot get the V6 with a manual box. So to all the bad critics out there, the Amarok has only given us its best being almost ten years old. One reason the Amarok gives a much gentler ride is its long leafspring setup. Even fitting a EFS Elite suspension with a five blade pack has not caused it to become a harsh ride.
    The worst news out is that Ford Australia and Ford South Africa is in the design stage for building of the 2023 Amarok lineup.

    you guys should do a review of the up coming Ford F-150. I'd like to see what you guys think about it. It'd be best if you did an unconventional comparison as well, just to keep things really interesting. F-150 vs. Hillux vs. Range Rover. I think that might be sorta cool. You could compare everything people look for in a truck: towing capacity, off-road capability, ruggedness, value, ect...

    Had a Mitsy L200 V6, pretty good, but thirsty and liked to break rear springs, then tried a Lexus RX300, lovely on road but it got real boring replacing bits that were ripped off underneath every time it went off road + no low range..
    I have a Hilux MK7 now and I love it, does everything I need, when I need it too. when you get stuck just select low range and let the tyres down and your on your way (so far never had to use my shovel).
    Shes not that thirsty I average 23mpg pretty good for a automatic lump.
    Personally i will never make the mistake again of buying a 4x4 without a low range box.

    I don't disagree with anything you've said here BUT what you've noted here about the difference between the Hilux and the VW is a similar story between the Hilux and most of its competitors.
    The Hilux is way underpowered now compared to the Mazda BT-50, the Isuzi D-Max, Nissan Navara etc. They all ride better than the Hilux due to them using modern suspension systems.
    I could go on but bare in mind the Amarok is made in Argentina and ALL of the pickups I've mentioned, including the Hilux, destroy the Amarok when it comes to reliability.

      correction, they aren't sold in the U.S. and Canada, everywhere else in North America has em. But they aren't sold in the U.S. and Canada, because mainly of the U.S.'s strict emissions, and Canada decided to connect their emission standards with ours for a "closer connection" I guess. And there's the stupid chicken tax that the government won't let go of. While its unlikely they we will every get the Hilux, because of the Tacoma. Volkswagen does need help regaining market share in the U.S. market, and the Amarok, could be a better competitor to the Tacoma here than the Frontier. But who knows, Volkswagen may mimic Toyota and create a separate Pickup made for the U.S./Canadian markets and maybe based on the VW cross blue SUV.
