    Having played the Callaway CF-16 for 2 years (had them properly gapped to 15 yards increments Gap to 5 iron (115 to 195 yards)) and now having just purchased the new Mizuno Hot Metal Pros (compared against the Callaway Apex CF-19s, Callaway Apex CF-19 Pros, Srixon 585 & 785) for me it came down to Spin Window, Distance, Sound, Included Shaft & Grip choices - and the new Mizuno Hot Metal Pro won the battle for me - but I will say the Callaway CF-19 Pros are amazing clubs. The Srixons were too low spinning for me - 7 iron was often at 4800rpms (but I absolutely loved the 785s) and would have bought them if not for the spin and the upcharge for the shaft I wanted. The thing I would add for anyone looking at all these clubs is you can move your spin window up of down by choosing the correct ball - for example the new Mizuno Balls have about an 800rpm difference for a 6-7 iron - and that is a BIG difference. I also want to add, after playing with these HOT Callaway CF-16 type clubs for 2 years, the most important feedback I can give is get every club bent to match the distances you need - it is vitally important with these hotter clubs to separate the distance between each club slightly larger than you would likely do with a forged blade as an example.
    Finally, the one thing this video pointed out for me over everything else (and I agree with having played them for 2 years) is the magic high and consistent type of flight the Callaway's create. I don't know what magic little formula the Callaway engineers figured out but what you saw on this video is real - hitting high mid/long irons into greens is a life changing experience - and they do it so consistently.

      Paul O'Neil probably why it took 3 years for callaway to release a new version

    If you're mishits are up and down the face rather than heel to toe the Apex may work but for those who move the ball
    laterally around the face the Apex is scary short in blade length.

    Nice! would you hit the Mizuno MP18 MMC with more confidence than the JPX919 Forged? they seem to have same loft, but perhaps the MP18 MMC is more consistent. Thanks!

    Good comparison. I'd rather have the better distance control from 919 forged.

  • @justinstephenson9360

    I have tried the 919 Forged. It is a little bit too long heel to toe for me and when I tried it the shaft was not really what I play...yet it was an incredibly straight hitting club, really soft feeling. In fact my biggest problem was that it was too straight hitting, I really struggled to put shape on the shot.
    After saying that I looked at the Apex and found the top line to be pretty thick and off putting.
    The surprise for me was the 919 Tour. That was a wonderful club and really easy to hit even for a streaky 10HC like me. I think I would have a combo set - 919 Forged in 5i & 6i and 7- upwards in 919 Tour. Would probably need to bend the 919 T down a degree to get it to work

    • @jeffreykatz1330
      @jeffreykatz1330 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried the forged and liked the tour better also, please explain the bending down to get it to work are you speaking of more distance? or better flight.

    • @justinstephenson9360
      @justinstephenson9360 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffreykatz1330 it is a gaping issue for a combo set of 919 T in the 7i-PW and 919 Forged in 4-6i, I suspect the gap between 6i & 7i would be too great. Given that the 919 Forged already produces a high ball flight for me it would be better to bend the 919 Tours to a degree or so stronger lofts than weaken the 919 Forged

    • @DjscratchHD
      @DjscratchHD 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      im around a 10 hc as well and was thinking about getting the same combo set you're thinking of. shaping shots is easy with the tours? and still forgiving. like the forged?

    • @justinstephenson9360
      @justinstephenson9360 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DjscratchHD It is a while since I tried them (ended up buying i210s which I love) but from memory, the 919 Forged irons were really hard for me to shape...they just want to go high and straight. The 919 Tours were reasonably easy to shape and 7i had enough forgiveness for me. I was only trying 7i in each set rather than a full set (all the club pro had in as demo) so you might find the 4i-6i in the forged has a bit more shot shaping ability than the 7i. With my swing I am happy to have a 5i just go straight!

    Coming from MP-18 SC, going into the 919 Forged. Hit them multiple times and got higher ball speed and peak height, better dispersion, steeper landing angle vs. my SCs. As I hit them, I got more and more confident and started swinging faster. Maybe because the SCs are fairly short heel to toe? My mishit is a toe strike, and the 919s were much better forgiveness-wise than the SCs. Didn't lose anywhere as much ball speed with the 919s. Looking forward to the switch! Thanks for the video. Mizuno all the way. :)

    Peak height and decent angle is better with the apex so a bit of a drop in spin won’t hurt will still stop as quick and can take a club less with the apex which always helps with control

  • @golfbuddy1969
    @golfbuddy1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Mizuno is longer blade length but less forgiving. Also, Mizuno balls definitely running out more. The Mizuno has more spin, but Apex sitting quicker. I play Callaway Steelhead Pro, and though they spin less, have no trouble stopping on greens. Is too much made of spin?

    Neither of those irons do anything for me on looks so I wouldn't try them. My iron of choice is the AP2 purely based on looks and feel. Tried with 4 different shafts (DG S300 White/Black, Project X and KBS Tour)... was between DG White and KBS... went with DG.

    I played the 919F for about a month. They always felt heavy and hard to close and not quite forged. I love Mizuno but they didn't knock my P770's or older MP-32's from the bag.

    Just came from a fitting was about to buy new irons until I hit my own better than anything new I have 716 cb titliest w 120 pro modus stiff they blew all irons way for me . I don’t think they can change irons much besides change the loft to get longer distance I tried every players iron on the market and can’t get better numbers sticking with what works

  • @eddiehughes6074

    919 forged didn’t impress me, never hit a mizuno before so was expecting big things! Even when hit out middle didn’t feel great or super soft. Very strong lofted and low flight compared to what I’m used to, 7 iron easily flying over 200. Also not much stopping. They feel small and very chunky with quite rounded bounce on sole, the pitching wedge was horrible, compared to my Cleveland tour action 588 which is so much sharper and slimmer. Will definitely be getting rid

  • @soloking2141
    @soloking2141 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The thing these guys (who clearly know more than me) seem to ignore is the distance from landing to stopping. Yes, the Apex are higher lofted with less spin but they are stopping in less yards! Averaging 6 yards from land to stop compared to the JPX which averaged 12 yards. So in the comparison of these two the spin rate is a bit overrated since you are getting a steeper descent angle from the apex with less spin. IDK maybe im dumb just an observation.

    Good video, I like the Mizuno iron in this comparison. I'm bias toward JDM irons. I think they make some of the best irons in terms of feel. I play Yonex ADX Tour Forged with their LBT600 Boron reinforced graphite shaft (stiff flex). They're old but I haven't found an iron since that feels better or flies the ball straighter.

  • @jeffplatt6646
    @jeffplatt6646 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great comparison. Looking at the numbers, the mizuno was spinning around 1000 rpm more, yet was rolling out around 5-10 yards further than the Callaway in the total Callaway. I always though more spin equals less roll out? Not more?

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it rolled out more because it landed short of the green. The sim seems to ignore backspin when landing off the green so always rolls out more. Personally i never look a roll out as that is out of your control depending on what it lands on, ground conditions, if it lands on upslope or downslope etc. Carry is the key number and a number you can control.

    • @jacobschlecht805
      @jacobschlecht805 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichaelNewtonGolf it also looks like the descent angle may have a bit to do with the roll out numbers. callaway was a touch steeper.

    I am switching from 919 Hot Metal pro after 3 months. Tried 919 tour, cant get o er offset of 919 forged, and 919 range is not for me - length dispersion is too big. I went with Apex Pro has hot tendencies are way smaller than 919 range. Apex Pro and Titleist T100 had similar results. Really wanted to like the MP20 MMC but couldnt find the feel for it.
